I don't know anything about the course, if it is worth fighting for, etc...but it doesn't seem too surprising that Chavez would look to this land for government housing.  I believe this is almost the same thing that Fidel did to the several Havana courses in the 50s/60s....the "elitist flavor" of golf in those countries does not exactly fit the Communist ethos....
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

"One of the courses affected, the Caracas Country Club, was founded in 1918 and has long been a gathering place for Venezuela's elite. The course existed long before urban sprawl filled up much of the mountain-fringed valley"

this club was built by Charles banks in the early 1930's and was on of the elitest clubs in the country, if not in all of So America

the clubhouse was designed by the great Cliff Wendehack (Winged Foot fame and so many others) ..... he worked with Raynor and Banks on many projects
If a player insists on playing his maximum power on his tee-shot, it is not the architect's intention to allow him an overly wide target to hit to but rather should be allowed this privilege of maximum power except under conditions of exceptional skill.

In the socialist utopia they will have no need for such capitalist frivolity.

I hate to see it too. Yet, here in the USA, we have 'eminent domain' and courts uphold taking people's homes for shopping centers and business. The arguement of 'greater need' is used by USA and Venezuala govs.
