Sebonack story: book a copy
« on: August 06, 2006, 10:30:38 PM »
Saw this great manuscript by Bradley Klein, which is compelling because it's like three books in one. To start,a thoroughly researched Long Island history that covers social, cultural ,and golf equally well. This history comes alive the via the  lucid narrative as well as complementary illustrations that are drawn heavily from archival material.

Personal stories of those involved, including  Jim Lipe, Jim Urbina and Mr. Pascucci. The anecdotes about Mark Hissey's professional landscape/ golf  evolution is of interest ,as is Garrett Boddington's monumental efforts. Critical analysis of the golf course is also very engaging. Add to this
Larry  Lambrecht,  Steve Szurlej photos.
Overall  poetic, well written, and beautifully produced.....
nearly as much fun to read,as it is to play 36 holes at   Myopia or Lawsonia

192 pages, full color, large format

The Making of Sebonack: Classic Golf by Tom Doak and Jack Nicklaus

$39.95

by myself and Carol Haralson, with whom I did the Desert Forest book. In addition to the aforementioned photographers includes photos by Joann Dost and a lot of historical imagery of great area courses.

It's a detailed account of the evolution of golf in the Hamptons and Long Island, with the inside story of owner Michael Pascucci and the collaboration of Nicklaus and Doak. Also, a lot of material on the site, its landforms and flora-cover, and how they were transformed into the golf course.

Available soon; details to follow.

I am very glad to find that Brad's original title, "The Making of Sebonack: Classic Arguments About Classic Design", by Tom Doak and Jack Nicklaus, was changed before printing.

I had offered several alternative titles, but had never heard back.

Hopefully, my copy is on its way.

The current title is very good. This book is on my to-buy list.

Excuse me but why does it seem a bit inappropriate that a course that hasn't even officially opened yet has had two press conferences and now a book in print? Whatever happened to letting the course speak for itself?

I'm sorry, I must be missing something.

Is this a forthcoming book (2007)?  I can't seem to find via Google or Amazon.

Sorry for my ignorance.

While you wait on Brad's book to arrive, I suggest grabbing a copy of Philistines At The Hedgerow:  Passion And Property In The Hamptons .  A little cheesy, but a good warm-up act.

How is that possible, I clicked on and it's $660. Mine goes up for sale next ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Book is being published by the club ...

Brad --

I hope you'll get a chance to play the course once in a while.
