RTJ, PB Dye GC, Pete Dye GC...

The other thread on PBD GC got me thinking ... isn't it interesting that these three eponymous courses are within a relatively small radius of each other? I wonder if there's any correlation there?

Also, are there any other archies with "signature" courses?

There is the Arthur Hills Golf Trail in Michigan. I believe it has nine or so of his courses.

Pete Dye Golf Club started and had the genesis of its name way back in 1976 or 77 when the coal mining baron (LaRosa) from north central WV asked that the club be named as such... 16 or so years later, after a series of starts and stops and many iterations of the 17th green, the club opened... Come to think of it the 17th might be in line for yet another makeover. (No offense to Mr. LaRosa)

The guess is the regional, if not national, acclaim led to the others... certainly PB's

You can add all the Nicklaus courses with "Bear" in the name, I supppose.

Sorry, but to equate the quality of PB Dye GC with the Pete Dye Club is like comparing the Giza Pyramid with a nearby anthill.  Dye's 16 year WVa effort resulted in a number of world class holes.  PB Dye Club falls short of anything best-in-county.  It's a pleasant piece of land grotesquely abused by the architect, blindfolded to the point of requiring a seeing eye dog to play, and mindlessly over-contoured just to outdo the old man.

I'm sorry, I was sent out there a few years ago to write up an evaluation and came away literally offended.

Jonathan, don't hold back man. Tell us how you really feel :)

I wasn't trying equate the quality of these couses. I just thought it interesting that the three courses are within a (relatively) small geographic area.

And I'm not aware of Jack Nicklaus Golf Club or Donald Ross Club or anything else like. The trails and Bears and Kings aren't the same thing.

Jonathon, out of curiosity, which holes did you find particularly offensive?
