"Royal Rankings"

Given the groups current focus on rankings how about nominating your top ten "Royal Courses" - with the added stipulation that you must have played the course, reputation will not suffice. Mine below:1) Royal Dornoch 2) Royal Melbourne West3) Royal Aberdeen4) Royal Cinque Ports (aka Deal)5) Royal Lytham & St Annes6) Royal Sydney7) Royal Melbourne East8) Royal Montreal Blue9) Royal Wimbledon10) Royal Royal Mid SurreyI was running out of breath by the 10th so maybe top 5 would be better.  Wimbeldon and Mid Surrey really only have location going for them.

About time you came up with a good idea. However, having Dornoch ahead of the West Course at RM is an act of lunacy. Dornoch today is overwatered, overplayed and overseeded. Having Royal Aberdeeen third, though, shows some flicker of hope.I would suggest the following:1. County Down2. Melbourne (West)3. St. Georges4. Portrush5. Dornoch6. Westward Ho!7. Lytham & St. Annes8. Birkdale9. Troon10. Porthcawl11. Aberdeen12. Brancaster13. Ashdown Forest14. and your home club, SydneyGeorge, as a member of a Royal club, can you play any of these without any problem (and at reduced fees)? You are my best friend, if that's the case.

Not to sound like a broken record, but don't forget Royal Worlington and Newmarket (which would be about 6th) and Royal Liverpool (which would be in the bottom third).

Now Ran you know that it was I who was overwatered, underplayed and definately overseeded when I stayed in Dornoch so how can you blame me for my love of the place? As regards privileges at Royal clubs, I could tell you but then I would have to kill you, or worse still play with you, so I am taking the 5th until you buy me a beer.

Gee, Ran, didn't you have Royal New Kent on or near your top 100 a year ago?  Glad to see you're off the drugs.

Dear Symbol,Due to an over balance of certain hallucinogens, I freely admit to (at one brief bizarre stage) having thought something of both Royal New Kent and Stonehouse. This can be blamed on growing up in Virginia, which is  one of the five worst states in the Union for golf (prior to the opening of your Riverfront).HOWEVER, just like Crenshaw escaped  Texas, I too escaped to live and to fight another day.I, Ran Morrissett,:1. realise my errors; 2. freely admit to them, and;3. HAVE CORRECTED THEM.Liking those two testimonials to earth moving  is akin to giving San Francisco GC a "9", Royal Aberdeen a "5", Westard Ho! a "6" and New South Wales a "7". We should all admit our mistakes and move on to bigger and better things.

In 1999 Ran ranked Royal Liverpool outside the Top 15 "Royals" in the world.

Agree? Disagree?

Royal Dornoch
Royal St Georges (Although I haven't played it I did see two days of the 2003 Open there so it's in.)
Royal Liverpool
Royal Aberdeen
Royal Hobart (I've only played/seen five. so it's in.  nice course without being awe inspiring.)

Hey, does TOC count as the home of the "Royal" & Ancient..

Did anyone notice that one of the groups for the Open was:

Westwood/Ho  :)

I've been fortunate to play a lot of these and being a member at a Royal is a good thing with reciprocity..

My order:

Royal Melbourne West
Royal Cinque Ports
Royal County Down
Royal Dornoch
Royal St. Georges
Royal North Devon
Royal West Norfolk
Royal Melbourne East
Royal Aberdeen
Royal Worlington
Royal Troon
Royal Ashdown

Snooty lot!  Everyone knows that it's better to be a member of a non-royal club.  Rye, Swinley, Sunningdale, Hon. Co. etc.  These are where proper snobbery can rule the roost.

Here in Canada you used to need permission from the Queen to call yourself a Royal club (i.e. Royal Montreal, Royal Colwood) but that seems to have gone by the wayside in recent years as it is now a market ploy - hence Royal Woodbine, Royal Ashburn to name two Royal courses in the Toronto area.

Interesting Wayne.  I would have thought that the Royal moniker would have been somehow Trademarked or Copyrighted somehow for use in this way.

Send an email or letter to Queen Betty c/o Windsor Palace. England.  I'm sure she's got a lawyer on retainer that has the time.   ;D

Wayne,

To make the moniker "Royal" official, you still need written permission from the Queen.

My ranking from courses I have played;

Royal Melbourne West
Royal Melbourne East
Royal Adelaide

Official Royal courses aren't exclusive to the British Isles .

I have played Royal Hua Hin , the oldest course in Thailand , which was bestowed its title by the Thai King in 1923 .
