Inky fisted peasants...
« on: July 23, 2006, 10:25:38 AM »
Has Peter Aliss gotten off the line of the Open with his comment that too many architects are just "inky fisted peasants" when noting their attitude towards links golf conditions and presentation of the courses?
No actual golf rounds were ruined or delayed, nor golf rules broken, in the taking of any photographs that may be displayed by the above forum user.

See Doak's post on the same subject.

RJ:  He said "golf course architects AND inky-fisted peasants," the latter referring to all the sportswriters who have commented on the course.

I don't know who he was thinking of when he included the golf course architects, though ... has anyone seen any comments about the course in print?  Pretty much none of the player / architects are playing over there.

Tom, I stand corrected, thank you for the clarification.  The "and" makes the comment even more appropos.  I still think it is the line of the Open.  Which archies was he possibly referring to...? Perhaps all of them that design their courses to lush green turf textures, with irrigation and maintenance as the highest priority, those that are geared to sell the Shangri-la lifestyle where no ones hair or clothing is mussed up, nor do they sweat through their golf shirt, the windows of all the mansions lining the course are sparkling, the ponds shimmer with the tinkle of waterfalls and fountains, muzak plays at the guard shack where you check in, and sounds of birds twirping is actually piped into speakers hidden in the bushes around the course.  Their archies are always tauted as "world renown" and "achies X has created his masterpiece at the Xcourse, or adverb/adjective, at X place.

and, the peasant inky fisted writers that ascribe and promote these idyllic notions as somehow - golf...

Dick, As I understood his comments, they were about both the gca and maintenance (conditions).

I noted there was a bit of a lull in the banter in the booth.  I thought Zinger might have swallowed the microphone, and Tirico let the pregnant pause sink in.  Maybe, since Faldo has dabbled in architecture, and writes some golf columns, and made the 'grass is dead' comments, it was Mr. Alliss's rejoinder.  I can certainly imagine this is the wit and style of the Brits.   Who wouldn't want to have a fine dinner with the likes of Mr. Alliss with a good start into some great wine along with a few table mates like Faldo and others to focus his wit upon?  Tom Doak, would you be up to the repartee?  I know I'd pay an admission to observe such. ;D

If for a second I thought Aliss had watched ESPN'S Sports Reporters this AM, I would have been sure he was referencing Mike Lupica.  Lupica stated that any course that can be played without mandating driver off all the 4's and 5's is not a test of golf nor worthy of a championship.  He forget that any 400 yd par four can be played 6 iron 6 iron by these guys.  Tiger's just had the stones to do it.

Cheers!

RJ:  I'd pay admission to sit in on that.

Hopefully Mr. Alliss would have as short a memory about what I wrote about some past architectural work as Mr. Nicklaus did last summer.

I KNEW the 'inky fisted' comment would be on this board like wildfire. I like Aliss. I like his character and I think it adds to the broadcast.

Alliss also got some great lines in on the bbc broadcast:

1816: As the camera pans to Tiger Woods' wife, BBC golf commentator Peter Alliss  pipes up: "In for a treat tonight, I bet."
