Winchester Country Club

Can anybody lend some insight to Winchester CC in Boston. Does anybody know how it would compare to other Ross courses in that area.

I have been fortunate to play Winchester a number of times and feel that it is without a doubt one of the best courses in the Boston area.  It is a great Ross course with no bad holes.  It is a very playable course with some devilish greens.  The 8th hole is an unreachable par 4, but the par 3 ninth is gorgeous.  It also has a brutal finish with four tough par 4's in a row.  It is always in good condition and is on par with Salem or many of the other Ross courses in the area.

I had dinner with Dave Miller last night and although I haven't played Winchester, he claims it's his favorite course in the state.

Knowing his tastes and playing experience, that's pretty high praise.

I owe my existence to Winchester CC, as that is where my parents met.  I played it a few times as a kid (usually in the annual Father and Son Tournament which one of my grandfather's founded), and it was a damn tough track for an 11-year old who only played once or twice a year.  Jug McSpaden was the pro there when my father learned the game.

I played it a couple of times in my mid-20's and remember it as being a "better" course than Myopia HC, which I also played a few times in that same period.

I was interested too that Dave Miller named Winchester as his pick for the best course in the Boston area (as Mike Cirba just said)--or maybe he even said Mass. He didn't go into why he thought that though. And as far as I'm concerned that is high praise for a guy who comes from Charles River G.C. definitely one of the very best Ross courses I've ever seen--maybe even the best---and I've seen a lot of Ross courses in my life.

Charles River looks like two things to me--1. A pretty good test of golf for the skilled player and, 2. One of the most interesting golf courses I've ever seen just to look at and study in an golf architectural sense. I even told Bill Coore that he has to get over to see Charles River (since he's working in the areas right now) because there are a truckload of things here and there I've no doubt he'd be interested in that he can stick in his mental inventory for the future on some project somewhere. At Charles River there is one thing or another that anybody interested in architecture should see on all these holes--#1, 4, 5, 6!, 7!, 8, 9!, 10, 11!!, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18. And there's something that can be said for the rest too.
