I was interested too that Dave Miller named Winchester as his pick for the best course in the Boston area (as Mike Cirba just said)--or maybe he even said Mass. He didn't go into why he thought that though. And as far as I'm concerned that is high praise for a guy who comes from Charles River G.C. definitely one of the very best Ross courses I've ever seen--maybe even the best---and I've seen a lot of Ross courses in my life.
Charles River looks like two things to me--1. A pretty good test of golf for the skilled player and, 2. One of the most interesting golf courses I've ever seen just to look at and study in an golf architectural sense. I even told Bill Coore that he has to get over to see Charles River (since he's working in the areas right now) because there are a truckload of things here and there I've no doubt he'd be interested in that he can stick in his mental inventory for the future on some project somewhere. At Charles River there is one thing or another that anybody interested in architecture should see on all these holes--#1, 4, 5, 6!, 7!, 8, 9!, 10, 11!!, 12, 13, 14, 15, 18. And there's something that can be said for the rest too.
