Ballyneal Match Play
« on: July 08, 2006, 10:37:59 AM »
I mentioned on another thread that I think Ballyneal is a great match play course.  Speaking of match play, Alan and I spent a good bit of our drive amusing ourselves with hole-by-hole match play of Ballyneal and Sand Hills vs. every other course we've played.  The result certainly doesn't correlate to which is the better course, but it's fun to recount all the holes while they are fresh on your mind to help strengthen your memory.

We would generally do it 1-18 on each course, and then reverse the nines (front against back and vice versa) to see if it yielded a different result.

Anyone that has played Ballyneal care to put it up against one of their favorites?  I thought the Sand Hills vs. Ballyneal match was interesting, though I know Tom Doak is trying to avoid such comparisons.

Tim:

It's not that I am trying to avoid comparisons.  Sooner or later, the comparisons will be made, but it would be nice for people to be a little more familiar with Ballyneal first.  Right now, if you suggested that ANY hole at Ballyneal was better than the great Sand Hills, there would be a horde of objections from people who love the latter and have never seen the former.

Personally, I don't think Ballyneal is going to win a hole by hole match against Sand Hills; but if you compare the two in terms of variety of holes and golf shots and scenery, I think it's got a case.
