Scotland in October
« on: June 05, 2006, 05:12:17 PM »
Anyone have any thoughts on a trip to Scotland in Early to mid October.  The weather is obviously unpredictable, but are there any considerations regarding course conditions, would you do it that time of year, are the courses any less of an experience that time of year, etc ?

October can be a glorious time of the year in Scotland if you keep to the Links Courses. The inland courses can turn into large worm casts that stick to your trolley wheels. Don’t go too far North though as it gets chilly and remember the nights start drawing in quite early.
The weekends are still busy – at Kilspindie one October Sunday morning in order to beat the crowds we had to tee off in pitch darkness at 7.00 am playing by brail for the first 4 holes but witnessing a magnificent flight of Geese rising at dawn over Aberlady Bay.

It's Low Season, so you can get REALLY CHEAP deals at Courses and Lodgings...

I went October 2005.
Played Gullane 2 and 3 - Windy  Overcast Very Pleasant
North Berwick - Howling Wind, Cold, Difficult though 2nd 18 the wind sat down a bit
Dunbar - 18 holes of drizzle, cold
TOC - Down pour for the 1st 7 holes steady rain for the next 7 and it stopped for the next 4, cold.
Crail - with FBD in shirtsleeves and sunny.

Was it ideal, no. Would I do it again, in a heartbeat.
Cheers
Stan

Mark,

We went in the first week of October, round the horn through Dornoch, Cruden Bay/Aberdeen, St. Andrews and ending at Prestwick. Our weather was really good until the very last day--weather's always a crap shoot but who cares!

I think it's a good time to go--the courses are just fine and not as crowded.

Only other thing I'd suggest is don't go too late in October if you want to play 36 a day because you'll run out of daylight that far north.
