Mark,
You amaze me. :) Where do you come up with all of these places I've never heard of? Do you dig through the Cornish and Whitten book? Keep it up, I'm always learning interesting things from what you unearth.

Mark,

Ron Whitten has done extensive write-ups on both courses:

http://www.golfdigest.com/courses/critic/index.ssf?/courses/critic/triggs.html

http://www.golfdigest.com/courses/critic/index.ssf?/courses/critic/shennecossett.html

I remember very little from my round at Triggs a few years ago, while I can remember almost every hole at Shennecossett—if that tells you anything. I do remember liking Triggs quite a bit, just not a lot stands out for me. It was also in brutal shape and the pace of play was even worse, so perhaps that is clouding my memory.

I found it fascinating to read Whitten's comentary about which of the holes at Shennecossett are Ross and which are new. I would have guessed at the new holes at 15-17, but some of the interior holes surprised me.

I play both about once a year and like them both pretty much equally.  I find Triggs to be a bit more difficult then Shenecosset.  Not quite as open as Shenecosset and while some trees could be removed they are not too obtrusive and still has wide fairways. Triggs has greens that invariably slope back to front so always best , as typical, to be below the hole.  Greens are typically in good shape and quick and fairways are decent.  Traps are a bit too rough around the edges but feature a very natural look in the fairways with lots of tall grass.  The rough is quite inconsistent and between tee and fairway typically many small rocks, rutted out areas, etc.

I find that I can remember the holes at Triggs equally as well as Shenny.  Also both highly walkable with greens and tees close.  Triggs has a bit more elevation change. It is a muni in Providence and clearly gets a muni crowd.  During the week pace usually isn't too bad but I have found it variable. Both are well worth playing and rank high on the fun to play scale.

"The Verdict
Groton got the better of this land swap. Pfizer used its new land mainly for a parking lot. The city used its to create three invigorating river-front (almost ocean-front) holes. On Golf Digest's 10 point scale (1 being Unacceptable, 5 being Good, 10 being Absolutely Perfect), I rate Shennecossett Golf Course at 7.3."

Having grown up learning to play on Shenny I couldn't disagree more !!!  The course isn't even a shell of it's former self.  The new holes don't fit at all and to top it off they ended up destroying 7 original holes to fit in the 3 new. As much as the changes disgust me Shenny is still worth playing if you are in the area. I would have loved to have seen the course when it was private and all 169 Ross bunkers were still in play.
