Broadmoor CC--Indianapolis
« on: May 14, 2006, 08:43:59 PM »
I had the opportunity to play Broadmoor CC in Indy this morning. After reading the course profile here and actually playing the course I began to better understand the point of some of these tree removal programs I keep reading about at other places. The member I played with was telling me about many trees they had taken out in the last two years, many of the same trees commented on in the GCA review. And I have to admit (although I'd never seen the course before) that there was no doubt in my mind that the course was better for taking them out based on the current playability. It greatly eliminated the "double-penalty" issues as well. This was a very good thing for me since I was generally still in the trees, rough, and or bunkers off the tee all day anyway :)

I haven't played since last fall when I played with the course superintendent who has since moved on to Olympia Fields.  Have they removed the huge tree guarding the left side of #14 green?  I still remember the grove of trees hiding the bunkers that have been taken out on the short par 4#7 on the left side between#6 and #7 fairways. From what I can remember, they still needed to remove a lot of trees.

Bob,
There is one tree left on #14, but I believe the two largest ones were taken out. I'm not sure about between 6 and 7...I hit in the trees on the other side and can only attest that they all appeared to be accounted for :)

There were definitely quite a few taken out on #2, 9, 10, and 11 from looking at the course profile pictures.

Andy,

Did the member happen to say what prompted the tree removal program at Broadmoor and how the members like the results?

David,
I don't have anything specific to be able answer your questions, but he did mention that the former super that is now at Olympia Fields played a major role in helping to carry out the plans. I believe that Tom Doak's firm did the master plan. He certainly liked the results, and my guess would be that the membership does as well, but I don't have any evidence of that.
