Short Is Beautiful?
« on: April 25, 2006, 06:52:43 PM »
I was talking with a golf-course architect this afternoon -- a young man formerly known here, by his own description, as "The Thread Killer." (Uff-da!)

I was telling him that a particular hole (medium-length Par 5) on a course where he's going to do some updating would play much better if the grass to the short-right of the green were mowed short, such that a player -- possibly even me -- could bounce a shot onto the right side of the green. (A bunker complex won't allow a bouncing shot onto the left side.)

As it is, the grass over to the right is always too long to allow the ground game.

I asked if he agreed with my prescription.

He did. He added something to this effect: "I can hardly think of any hole where, if you suggested eliminating long grass, I would disagree. I'm not a fan of tall grass. I prefer leaving options open -- and tall grass takes away options."

What do you think?

I think that's a slight exaggeration but not far from the truth. I'll take this...

or for that matter one of these...

over "fur pie" any day. Look at those beautiful contours!
