The New 11th
« on: April 06, 2006, 01:21:43 PM »
It's only half way through the day and things may change, but I've never seen anything like what is going on at 11.

The best players in the world in ideal conditions and no wind have hit the fairway 27% of the time and hit the green in regulation 24% of the the time.

Let's see how the day plays out, but by any measure that is a redesign over the top.

Bob - have you see where the pin is?  That has a lot to do with the missed greens - it's tucked with a capital T, front right corner.

Bob,

Even before the plantings that was a very uncomfortable drive for someone who hits a draw or relatively straight ball.
It just sets up awkward.
Now with the addition of the trees on the right and the added length it's even more so.  Now it's awkward and intimidating.

I"m not a fan of the trees on the right, but, I'd rather see long to medium irons into that green versus medium to short irons.

# 18 is another uncomfortable drive for a draw or straight ball.

I wonder if Mickelson isn't onto a clever method of coping with distance and prefered ball flight.

Just think of the Manufacturers, DROOLING, hoping for a Mickelson win with TWO drivers.

I can see it now, two to three drivers, four wedges, two putters and some utility clubs

USA's telecast starts at 4:00, and I can't wait to watch it.

Tom -

Why is that considered a tough pin?  I would have thought that would be one of the easier places...lay up short right, pitch and putt?  Doesn't that pin take the water and bunker out of play (or moreso than other pins)?

On the issue of 2 drivers I received an e-mail from Callaway with a survey on my opinion of Phil using 2 drivers last week in Atlanta

Appears they are not sure how to market this. Does it say the driver has limitations (read weakness) so you need 2 or does it open up a new market that of players carrying 2 drivers giving them an advantage.
The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pulls them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best.

Matt:

In terms of disasters, it's an easy pin.  Yep, the water is completely out of play.

In any case that's not my point... I'm just talking about missing the green.  It's SO tucked (10 feet from the edge, they said), it seems 3 out of every 4 at least are missing it in the exact same place, to the right to some degree or another barely off the green.  It's a good miss - the up and downs are difficult but not impossible.

ok, gotcha.  I've got the masters.org website up but for some reason my "Life at Amen Corner" feed isn't working, so I haven't seen any individual shots.

From short-and-right of the green, is their much complexity / undulation for them to negotiate?  I'm trying to picture the front of the #11 green and can't recall a lot of movement there.  Tx.

Matt - there's a LOT of movement - you'll see when you get the site up and running.  It's making a lot of them look silly.  Lots of 5s being made, very few 3s.  Lots of very tough putts.

Update your macromedia player thingey ...

When on the masters.org website load the "course map" and look at the Fronk-en-stein position of the new tee on #11.  Ycccch.  I almost posted a link to it before, but I thought better of it.  Now it seems the appropriate time to mention it.

Geoff Ogilvy is becoming GCA's PGA Tour spokesman, I think.

Here's an article about his reaction to the changes at Augusta
