Yale: Public or Private
« on: February 27, 2006, 01:39:33 PM »
Is Yale public or private? The website seems to indicate private, but a friend of my says his brother was a member, and now it is public. They are closed for the winter.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Cary, it is private, but it is more open to others than many private clubs, such as students, alumni, etc.  And it is cheaper than most private clubs that are anywhere near it's quality.

Cary,

Yale has members but is open to the public so long as you have an introduction from someone affiliated with the University (eg, a graduate) who can provide "sponsorship."  Whoever your sponsor is just has the call the course to say you want to play.  Pretty simple process.  The price is pretty steep - $150 last summer I think (someone paid for me so I am not sure about this).  Worth every penny!

Phil...are you sure of your information.? This is from the Yale website and guest policy seems more stringent than your post indicates:

Guests of a Member
Members may accompany up to seven guests. Additional guests will pay the unacommpanied guest rate.
Members may introduce unaccompanied guests by letter, telephone or telefax. Unaccompanied guests cannot play during member-only reserved tee times and requested tee times must be confirmed by golf course staff.

Guests of Others
Yale students, faculty and staff who are not members can introduce guests. The guests must play with the Yale student or employee. A valid Yale ID is required.

Cliff,

The procedure I was referring to is embodied in this quote from the Yale website:

"Members may introduce unaccompanied guests by letter, telephone or telefax."

There are certain times when unaccompanied guest can't play the course - before 1:30 on weekends for example.  I probably glossed over this.  However, I have played the course three summers in a row as an unaccompanied guest - most recently at 11 AM on a Friday last summer.

I hope people stay away so they don't make it harder to get on the course.

Yikes...Yale a Public  ???

Can you say "6 hour round"?  They'll have to add about 30 seats to the snack bar on #9.  While I am certainly not an advocate of private courses, I think some courses are better left to restricted play.

So that means you can't just have have an alum call to get you on.  They must be members.

Cliff,

I don't think the guy who called for us is a member - just an alum.  He called the club, said he was so and so, class of whatever.  The course checked to verify his identity and affiliation with Yale.  After this introduction, we (my brother) called, gave his name and arranged the tee-time.

Cliff,

Unless the rules have changed an alum intro will do the trick. Yale is a monumental golf course.
