North Dallas, 40
« on: February 26, 2006, 05:24:39 PM »
I have a friend who is being transferred to Dallas. He'll probably end up in the north suburbs as the job is in Richardson. Any suggestions of where to join as a family membership? Length is not a problem for him, plays off 2 to 4 hdcp.

Dallas National is ranked very high by GW
199 played, only Augusta National left to play!

Dallas National is actually just west of downtown, maybe a bit south and is probably a pure golf club.  I presume proximity and family membership preclude that.  The northern Preston Trail is also precluded, as it is men only.

If so, I guess the best options, depending on location are

Gleneagles (vonHagge-Devlin 36 Holes)
TPC Craig Ranch in Plano, (New Wieskoph)
Stonebridge Ranch in McKinney (Dye and Hills 45 Holes total)Gentle Creek in Propsper (DA Weibring) if much further north.  Castle Hills, a Morish-Weiskoph course
Brookhaven (Club Corp in Carrollton, 54 holes)
Columbian Club (Jewish club in Carrollton)
Bent Tree (Old VonHagge with a Keith Foster redo)

The first two are Club Corp properties, and I believe Gentle Creek is an equity club, perhaps with some semi private aspect now until the house sales allow memberships to grow.  Last are equity, I believe, although not sure about CH.

Slightly lesser lights (and priced) include Prestonwood (with two separated courses) in far north Dallas, Los Rios in Richardson.  There are probably a few others I can't think of off the top of my head.

I will leave it to him to judge the architectural merits of any club that turns out to be nearby.  In general, the north dallas cc scened didn't get going until the 60's, so if he is looking for a classic along the lines of the old main line in Philly, he will be dissapointed.  But, some solid courses.

For public play, Grapevine Municipal is a nice track.

Gentle Creek is golf only.If price is not an issue start with Northwood which is on Richardson Dallas line and has good swimming and Tennis in addition to a redone course that did host an Open, once.Royal Oaks is another good family club also close to Central.Gleneagles is mandatory carts and 36 squeezed in holes. If jewish,Columbian is excellent.Brook Hollow ,Lakewood etc are a little far from Richardson.I hear the Bent Tree redo is nice. For a good moderately priced Richardson club,Canyon Creek has good tennis, swimming etc.

To add to some of the other clubs mentioned above, Dallas Athletic Club in Garland is another option.  Two courses - one recently redone - and, depending on where he is in Richardson, could be quite convenient.
