Valderama here I come
« on: January 17, 2006, 08:59:48 PM »
You will all be well rid of me for a month or so from Friday when I head of to work in Europe. Fortunately we are starting in S. Spain and I have some friends from the UK meeting me. We have tee times at Valderama, Sotogrande and San Roque old.
I will report back when I return, but in advance, does anyone with knowledge of these courses have any tips for features to keep my eyes open for? I will most probably be struggling to find any kind of game and not get trashed by the year round UK golfers..
I really don't know much RTJ. Atlanta Athletic Club (Riverside renovated by Rees) and Crumpin Fox (promarily Rulwich, I believe) are the only two that come to mind that I've played. I don't think I'm a hater.. I certainly had a lot of fun on both of those.

I've never been, but a friend of mine speaks very highly of Valderamma's par 3 course.  For whatever that matters.

Lloyd,

Valderama is very good and enjoyable, but not great in my mind. San Roque has a lot of variety, and risk-reward holes featuring water. I thought it was a lot of fun. If my memory is right there's another good course called San Lorenzo.

The Costa del Sol area is beautiful and fun with some great views and food.

Have fun!

Mark - you are not quite right; San Lorenzo is on the Algarve in Portugal -  a nice golf course though.

Lloyd - I have played Valderrama twice but I was not very architecurally minded at the time. What will strike you is the awesome conditioning of the course - you could have a good temporary green just about anywhere on the 18 fairways! The cork trees lend it character, and the combination of their intrusion into the fairways, and the fact that these can be pretty firm mean that the course plays much narrower than it seems.

San Roque Old is a nice course - quite hilly in parts, like Valderrama. Seve's brother is the pro there - you should book a 30 min lesson just so you can experience first-hand what a gruff, take no prisoners, largely charmless, guy he is!

I was pretty underwhelmed by Sotogrande Old. I don't think it is anywhere near the class of the others. I will be interested to hear your thoughts.
