Tony, please understand that I am envious and wish I was in MY cups.

 ;D

But great question re Royal St. Georges!  I think the pros did take the direct attack and thus met the most resistance.  They likely thought they could overcome it with enough power... which must also have been the military mistake all too often, no?

The main culprit was #1.  The fairway does push the ball right and left at the driving zone.  The players knew this and many chose not to lay up.  They got caught trying to cheat the Lord.  All the talk is not very well disguised whinging.

Ciao

Many golfers I know are lost on subtleties and can't understand why a shot down the middle isn't the requirement.
I particularly enjoy the downhill fairway spots that when hit give an extra jump forward.  But, then most of the weapon wielding big hitters fly those.  :P
