How's this for a Hazard?
« on: December 02, 2005, 02:45:33 PM »
From the BBC....

"In another incident this week, a wartime landmine was found during the digging of a bunker at Buckpool Golf Course in Buckie"

I hope they left it in place, I'm sure the pros would be scared of that one!

We have occaisionally found old bombs.  Once was near Singapore years ago.  Air Force Base Golf Courses in the USA are often planned over now unused storage or bombing target areas.

Once, in Nevada years ago, we went to the office of UXB - "Unexploded Bombs, INC." for some help on a project.  In the lobby was a bust of the company founder.....It was a headless bust.

I burst out laughing, which is of course the reaction they want.

I looked at a project on the north coast of France several years ago that had German Missle Sites, a damage Castle, and several bomb craters.  I couldn't help but think how much they looked like Pete Dye pot bunkers.

Had you taken on the project, would the craters have been left in place?? i.e. using the 'natural' features as much as possible.

I think some of the bunkers crossing the approach to the 18th at Sunningdale Old Course were made by Hitler's bombs.  Quite recently a whole cache of tank ammunition was found in woods just to the right of the 7th at Llanymynech.

That is one hell of a gorgeous looking opening hole!

Hi Brian,

How far out are the fairway and "Hitlers" bunkers?

Does anybody else think that looks like an even better version of Crail Balcomie's second green and third tee?  Beautiful... :D

The pic. is of the 1st at Stonehaven GC on the east coast of Scotland , about 15 miles south of Aberdeen .

To me the hole always seems to act like a lure to golfers who are just passing by . I have posted the pic a few times before and I always end up getting e-mails from lurkers on this site , who tell me stories of how they were on a tour of Scotland and were just passing by on there way to Cruden Bay , Royal Aberdeen etc. , hearing of Stonehaven they decide to make a short detour , see this hole , get sucked in and make changes to their plans .

The tee is to the far right of the pic. , the hole measures 305 yards and plays downhill . So it is very driveable but even to our best golfers in the club , not many are willing to take it on .

Being on such a small piece of land we have no practice facilities to warm up on , so pulling out driver and going for the green can be a bit foolish , and as with all coastal Scottish courses , wind is a major factor .

Anything sliced will very easy go OB on the right , and anything well struck will easily go OB on the left . So its best to play safe and depending on the pin position try and place it on the fairway .

Hitlers is a favourite aiming point and is around 70 yards from the green . Many end up in here but it isnt as hazardous as I would like . Stance can be a problem and a flyer through the back is very possible ( Also OB !).

The one thing the pic. doesnt show is that the green is sunken. So you have a decision to make after finding the fairway of bump and run it in or flying it all the way . If you decide to throw it up to the pin , then you must make sure you clear the "slope" at the front of the green or it will kick your ball out the back OB , which is not a nice start to your round or to the next group watching on the tee .

The photo was taken from the clubhouse so all this is played out in front of spectators , and along with the 18th makes great viewing (albeit a little sadistic) .

If you were sitting in the clubhouse and looked right of the above pic. this is what you would see . The 18th is a par three of 211 yards , and always seem to play into the wind , so it can be quite a knock . As I said this makes great viewing for the clubhouse and every medal someone will end up against the wall of , or OB in the graveyard .

I have been asked by a few people to do a "My Home Course" , and it is a work in progress , that I will hopefully finish next year  :P .

Best Regards
Brian

Too true Brian.  I ended up against the wall on the 18th! I played a deft wall banker through (or sholu I say bounced over) the back bunker and onto the green.  Sadly, I missed the 15 footer.

Lovely course is Stonehaven.  Very friendly as well.  These photos aren't even the best holes!

How do you feel about the "wall shot" , as it happens quite a bit .

Can it be used as a hazard ? .

After James Braid left his mark there was only the one bunker on the righthand side , which is on the best line into the green , landing short of it and using the slope to come into the green. So I take it , he thought it was fine .

But sometime in the 1960's the committee decided too many balls were ending up against the wall , and surrounded the green on that side with bunkers .

I think this is when a lot of courses in the UK started to look at what was considered fair and unfair on their courses .

BTW , I have seen plenty of shots sliced and hitting the Clubhouse on the right also .

Regards.
Brian

Maybe the bunkers were put in a sign of respect for the dead! The wall doesn't bother me.  I know it doesn't take a bad shot to end up hard against it, but so what?  For me, Stonehaven is most memorable for its many and varied one shotters.  As such, I would take out the wallside bunkers allowing the wall to really shine.

I don't recall how far it is from the 18th to the clubhouse.  I thought it was about 60 yards and uphill.  Anybody heading up that way deserves a bit derision from folks in comfortable seats bending the elbow.

That is one hell of a gorgeous looking opening hole!

1000% agreement here -- where it's several degrees
below zero ... though I'd think that a gorgeous hole
on any day of any year.

Brian -- If you don't have time for the Course Profile,
just post some pictures and captions.
