Golf in Pakistan
« on: December 02, 2005, 12:27:05 PM »
I've been listening to some of the cricket commentary from the Pakistan-England test match at Lahore.  Some of the commentators said that they and some of the cricketers had played golf near Lahore and remarked on what a good course it was.  Apparently it was an old course owned by the local railway company and it was completely rebuilt two years ago.  Does anyone know anything about this, or golf in Pakistan in general?

Its not a very good course really - but way better than the rest of what they have in Pakistan, most of which are old courses built by the british army, very basic. The new course was completely redesigned/rebuilt by a Malaysian designer on a very tight site.

We have a project in Lahore as well but hasnt started construction as yet, no one can dither like a Pakistani general - I enjoy visiting there though - Lahore is a nice town. All I can say is that if you go to Pakistan be prepared to eat plenty of meat cause thats all thats on offer. That and rice. Not a piece of fruit in sight.

No wonder they are often prevocative, they don't get enough roughage in their diet.

Rihc,

I suspect that Scotland would trounce England at the minute, given their abject batting.

Brett,

No, I'm not planning to go there, but I was curious what there might be there, given the commentators' remarks.

Is Lahore anywhere near that province that India is going to tactically NUKE any time now? I hope not because I really don't like seeing even a bland old British military golf course go NLE.

Oh yeah, is Lahore anywhere near that province Osama's vactioning in the caves in that we might tactically NUKE any time now?

Tom,

Thats a good expanation for the whole muslim angst/terrosism thing - not enough roughage in their diet - I wonder why no one has thought of this before!!. Being constipated all the time would certainly make me angry at the world.

TE - Both India and Pakistan have nukes so hopefully no one is going to start lobbing them around in that area anytime soon.

The Pakistan courses are really very basic in nature, with very few redeeming features or quirk.

I think the "muslim angst/terrosism thing" is more simple.

The rich guys get to have four wives, and naturally choose the babes and/or the rich ones.  There are fewer girls available to the poor young guys and most of them are ugly and poor.

Hence testosterone overload and a a propensity to believe in visions of a heaven full of beautiful virgins.

Now if we could just channel this aggression into golf..... :'(

Mark - my man in the British High Commission sends the following dispatch:

"Best courses are Islamabad, Rawalpindi Golf club (the colonial one), Royal Palm, Lahore and Arabian Sea in Karachi.

But there are several others. Quality of greens is very good, fairways more mixed, with the Lahore and Karachi ones excellent, but the northern ones more scabby at certain times of year.

Best conditions for golf in the north are Sept - Nov and March - May. In the South avoid May-September (too hot)."

I recall him also telling me that golfers normally play with caddies and ball-watchers, who are also prone to improving lies !
