How About a Feature Interview with Ran Morrissett?
« on: September 03, 2005, 12:42:41 PM »
Does anyone else think this website would benefit from a Feature Interview with Ran?

He hardly has the time to post in the DG any more, and I think it would be beneficial to record (1) some background on how this site came to be, (2) his view of the influence of this website (if any) on what is happening in the real world of GCA today, (3) his goals for the website in the future, (4) possibly discussing (once and for all) rules for posting, aliases, eligibility for membership, etc., and of course, (5) some of his opinions on golf course architecture that only the longest-term members here would know, but all would certainly be interested in.

I remember the days when Ran had the chance to post more frequently, and I always thought his posts set the standard as far as being civil, well written, and thought-provoking. I'd sure like to see some of his thoughts recorded in the Feature Interview section, and although I don't know who should do the interview (I'll let others decide), I think it can be done in a way that won't follow the "ESPN Self-Promotion Model" that might give Ran hesitation to do it.

If you think that this website essentially "is" his interview, then that's OK--this website works great as it is--but if you think that recording some of his observations and opinions in the Feature Interview section could benefit this website, then I'm all for it.

Idea-

Given the success of the Mike Keiser approach to interviewing, why don't we start a few thoughtful threads as was done for Keiser?  Maybe some lurkers would even respond?

Cheers!

It's true our great GOLFCLUBATLAS.com leader, Ran Morrissett, "The Most Beloved Man in Golf" (actually it's very interesting how he came to be known as that), is rarely on this site these days. It's not because he's too busy either. If truth be told it's because Ran is actually so computer illiterate he often can't remember how to find the site and if he gets lucky and does find it he often can't remember how to log on. At one point I believe he suspended or even expelled himself from his own website by mistake.

But I think an interview with Ran on here would be a wonderful idea---and I'm just the man to do it;

Sample Question:

TEPaul;
Ran, is GOLFCLUBATLAS.com everything you imagined it ever could be?

Ran:
What? Who? Golf Club What? What kind of Altas? Is that the Internet thing I used to know when I lived in Australia?

Anyone who plays hickories in the year 2005 is worth interviewing, if he'd be willing to do it...

It isn't the most beloved man in golf, it's, one of golf's most beloved figures. Wasn't it?

Well I asked the man the question How did he become yada yada yada, on that NM GCA Land of Enchantment outing. He answered.

What would reallly be facsinating would be a roundtable with Ran and some of the Damon Runyon characters on this website. I'm all for it ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

"It's been done near numerous times....you just haven't been there  :)"

It has been done many times and I'm just trying to imagine how many times I've heard Ran say;

"OH, COME OOOON!!!!"

;)

One should never let Ran Morrissett get away with some of the things he says just to create an effect though. A good example of that is the statement he made to me while touring around Sand Hills taking photos;

"Do you think I should interview Bill Coore on this course again and ask him if he's aware that by failing to meld together a part of the 14th and 15th fairways he completely blew the opportunity to create an otherwise great golf course?"

I guess he thought I'd fall down and start screaming bloody murder over such an outrageous remark but I just very calmly said; "Of course you should ask him that, matter of fact I think I'd insist on it."

Ran;

Total silence!
