Engineering Help
« on: September 06, 2005, 09:05:04 AM »
We must build a barrier at the end of our practice range to keep balls from leaving our property and potentially endangering the property across the street.  Notwithstanding using limited flight range balls we have a problem.  If anyone has been involved ina similar project, I would appreciate a recomendation for an engineer to help calculate the necessary height for the net.  This will help ion the permitting process.  Thanks in advance.

Love to help.  I've done some sound work before, calculating barrier heigth for sound, etc., which is harder to do than what you are asking.  So just tell me the following and I will give you the hiegth:

How far away are the tees from the end of the fairway?

Any prevailing wind I should know of?

How "big" are you designing for (avg. golfer (220 yds off tee), good golfer (260 yds off tee), john daly (330 yds off tee)?

SL,

The town will usually determine the permited barrier height.

Consult with them first.

The same goes for any potential offset.

Have your superintendent contact the town regarding this issue.,

My recommendation would also be to check the winds loads on the netting based on the ultimate height required as well as the foundation supports for the poles.  Don't underestimate these needs and engineering principles.

I would also concur with Pat Mucci regarding the potential for Town requirements.  You might be surprised that they could have some review jurisdiction with respect to your project.

Thanks for the replies.  Regarding the town requirements, we are beyond that issue.  The town wants us to obtain the engineering study.  We have dealt with the authorities on a variety of issues over the years.  Keeping a good relationship with the town is a good idea for any club.

Try the folks at Wadsworth (wadsworthgolf.com) for a recommendation on a local engineer.
