Plainfield Re-routing
« on: July 18, 2005, 10:11:32 AM »
Forecaddie hears the following..

1,2,3,13,14,15,16,17,18,10,11,12,4,5,6,7,8,9..

Sounds like it is 50/50.. All part of the reaction (IMHO) to the drop in their Golf Digest rankings.. They want to finish in front of the clubhouse too..  The 9th green is a tricky two tier affair.. My advance scout tells me he doesnt like it given the 9s will not be balanced now.

Going to play there later this week, will the new configuration be in effect for me to see?

From making the enlightened decision of having Hanse do a restoration to worrying about Golf Digest ratings.  Very sad.

David,

No.  If it happens it wil be for next year.  Another possible outcome may be to just switch the nines.

Corey,

I'm not sure how much the influence the Golf Digest rankings have on this development.  The potential re-routing of the course has been discussed for years because many members would prefer to finish on the ninth hole in front of the clubhouse.

I doubt very much that there will be any significant changes made to the course because of the Golf Digest rankings.  There will be more attention to daily maintanence, but the Hanse restoration will go forward ( a few more holes to be restored) and the clearing of trees to further open up the course is on the agenda.

I like how the routing allows for that kind of potential change.  It wouldn't make a difference to the walker.
I do like 9 and the green complex, I was long right over the green side bunker, the one time I played there.  With a front right pin, it was truely the worst spot you could be in... I made a tigeresque flop to the front and, just rolled to the apron, to a few applauding members on the patio.

I wasn't a fan of 18 after one play.
So is that the premis, they would like to finish on a better hole?

I would think the placement of 11, 12 & 16 would be most important, and as only 16 would move, maybe it isn't a big deal?

What would you recommend?
Cut down all the trees?
12 could have a huge fairway, with a central hazard in the first landing zone.
Thinking of Bob, Rihc, Bill, George, Neil, Dr. Childs, & Tiger.

Mike,

I would leave the routing as is.  The current 18th hole is not the greatest finishing hole, mostly because of the tee shot.  I think it is a very good second shot and a very good green.

From what I understand, the trees that are coming down are for the purpose of improving turf conditions is specific areas.

Apparently they are not only re-routing the course, but it appears they've turned it on its side!  ;D

On the more recent aerial you can see the early stages of the restoration of the alternate fairway on the par 5 16th hole.

I don't think the proposed change would be so bad. It would provide a slightly better finishing hole, and be in front of the clubhouse. On the down side I think #16, 17 are a better lead in to the finish of a round, although #7 is no slouch with that great fallaway green.
Either way it would still be one of my favorite courses.
