In how you approach a vertical (12 to 6) ridge in the green or a horizontal (9 to 3) ridge in the green ?

Assume no fronting hazards.

Is one shot aerial and one along the ground ?
Are both aerial ?
Are both along the ground ?

More likely to consider ground game for horizontal ridges, but these days the aerial game is the shot of choice 95% of the time, even for those situations.  Distance control is why.

Pat - aren't you repeatedly on record as believing that the aerial approach is far preferable in nearly every situation?

My biggest concern is the randomness the ground presents. Assuming there is not a lot of wind, I have a pretty good idea of what my ball will encounter in the air.

I think the ground game is alive and well, it's just moved up to the green, hence the armed shot that releases and follows the contours. Our sixth at Hotchkiss has 2 ridges( think of a "T" inside an "O" forming 3 sections with the back being about 9 yds deep from ridge to over the usually firm green. Trying to hit this section and hold it on the fly is a low percentage shot, running it back there is more reliable, under any conditions.
I'm sure there are many other similar examples.

The ridge on the 12th at NGLA isn't quite 3 to 9 oclock, perhaps 2 to 8 oclock.

When the hole is in front of the ridge do you play your approach differently from when it's behind the ridge ?

...on further reflection this morning, I think that from 7 till 1, I prefer vertical...but after 10 till 4, I would best play it horizontally.
