Restoration and Reputations
« on: March 01, 2005, 10:55:59 PM »
The appearance of Skokie and Beverly on Golfweek's classical list makes me wonder:

The reputation of which Golden Age architect will reap the most benefit from existing and future restorations?

I was not aware that Ron Prichard worked in the 1920's.  ;)

The answer, I think, is Donald Ross.

He did a lot of courses for clubs that didn't have a lot of money. Those were the clubs that sought to reduce maintenance expenses (who needs all these Ross bunkers and green contous?) and skimp on paying fees to outside designers for rennovation/restoration work (hey guys, we can redesign this hole ourselves!!).

None of which is to imply that wealthy clubs didn't also sometimes mess up their Ross courses.

Unlike other Golden Age icons, Ross designed a lot of courses for clubs that were thinly capitalized. And those courses haven't fared very well. Just a little of the right kind of restoration pays huge dividends at these courses.

Yes, I'd have to agree with Ross just based on his numbers of courses in the pool of those that have been or will continue to be restored/remodeled.

But, MacKenzie has to be in that mix, not based on shear numbers, but in most cases, artful restorations by competent remodel/restore architects.  Valley Club of Monticito, Pasa, Renassaince; Valley Club DeVries; Scarlett, you pick-em; or who dare say ANGC and live to see another day? ;) ;D  I'm sure I'm missing others...

Dick - "Valley Club DeVries?"  I thought Tom Doak did all the restoration work there, truly excellent work.

ooops, second time in a couple of weeks I got the credit wrong at Valley Club.  I meant Meadow Club in norcal - Devries.  Urbina was the chief restoration/remodeller at Valley, not Hepner, so I've been corrected.
