Has anyone heard of this course and is it worthwhile playing? I have been asked to play next week and don'tknow whether it is worth the trip.

Fred:

I played the course about 37 years ago. Remember almost nothing about it. In those days the Jacksonville PGA Tour stop was played there. It was called the GJO for Greater Jacksonville Open. A friend's father was a member and we saw Tony Jacklin defeat Arnold Palmer for the title. I'll never forget seeing Jacklin hit a 4-wood off of one of those little scrub cactus-like plants onto the green and make birdie while Arnie made bogey form the middle of the fairway. I loved Arnie, but at that moment became a Jacklin fan. At the time he was barely heard of in the U.S.

Can't help you with the course.

On second thought, I think maybe the course I remembered was called Deerwood, not Deercreek. Never mind.

Deercreek is not good...  It is within a housing development, bounded by homes throughout.  It has struggled with poor maintenance.  It is amongst my least favorite to play in the Jacksonville area...

Deerwood, on the other hand, has recently re-opened after a "complete makeover" by Brian Silva.  It is quite good.

Fred, is the real reason you're going to Jacksonville to see the Eagles beat the Patriots?

What's wrong with TPC or Sawgrass?

Deercreek isn't worth the trip - even if coming from a very short distance...

This coming week, I believe that nearly every golf course near Jacksonville is booked - and many are charging insane prices, even for some marginal golf...

could always try pablo creek (exlusive fazio design where duval parked the claret jug after his british open victory). tpc sawgrass or timuquana are other worthy options.

pablo creek is well worth it! I think that Palancia is also a great course and worth looking into as well. Marsh Creek is better then the course you asked about and should be simple as well to get on.

wayne,

TPC sawgrass and basically every other good course is almost certainly out of the question.  the eagles are staying at sawgrass and it is my understanding the nfl basically booked it for the entire week, and those that can get in through that connection are being charged around 1500 a round!  the superbowl is a great event, but the way everything is marked up is ridiculous, were staying in Orlando and then driving up on Sunday, it made airfare and hotel so much easier.

GO EAGLES!!!

Here in Philadelphia, I saw an ad in The Inquirer for St. John's(?)  and heard a radio commercial for Fleming Island both in JAX so not every course is booked solid.

St. Johns Golf & Country Club (Clyde Johnston - 2001) is booked solid Saturday before Super Bowl.  Fleming Island (Bobby Weed - 2002) may have a few spots available, but I don't know...  Super Bowl week, St. Johns is $150/round - not a bad golf course, but a gouge-job at that price...  Unfortunately, that kind of thing has become the norm this coming week...

I understand that Deerwood (not Deercreek) is closed on Saturday for a private Sports Illustrated all-day golf function.  It would not surprise me if many of the better golf courses in northeast Florida are similarly "occupied"...

The standard gouge for courses during SuperBowl week was 3x the usual greens fee, at the last Miami SB...all the way up the coast into Ft Lauderdale...

I "further out" course, that is sort of interesting, is a M McCumber design or re-do, not sure which, and not even sure if it is still there...........called "The Ravines"........I played there once in 1992 or 1993 and remember that it was on very "unusual" terrain for that part of Florida.....worth investigating........especially since it is off the beaten path on a "busy weekend".......

The Ravines may or may not be far enough off the beaten path - but yes, it is still there...  And it is interesting and somewhat unusual in character and topography...

I guess our "gouges" are not any different than the typical Super Bowl experience...  How reassuring!

There is always Palatka GC. A pretty raw Ross. I was not too impressed with it, but Michael Fay says I missed something, and he could be right.
