Unmaintainable Featues
« on: January 30, 2005, 07:41:32 PM »
Is there such a thing in existance as an unmaintainable feature? I'm not talking difficult, I mean impossible.

On a different level, I understand there are existing features that are unmaintainable when budgetary constraints are in place.

I've seen 20 foot high grass faces on bunkers being mowed with hover mowers on ropes......I can't imagine anything that is impossible to maintain though.

Joe,

Lost Tree had slopes so steep in some bunkers that instead of sand, a white fabric that looked almost identical to the sand was used in the face of the bunker.

I've also seen convex mounds that are impossible to maintain and other mounds that had severe drop offs that were difficult to maintain and posed a safety hazard.  In each case the mound was softened to permit mowing.

Joe,
I once built a stacked sod bunker with bermuda in AZ. The largest part of the stacked sod faced south and even though I added small irrigation heads to give the stacked sod extra water, it still toasted and just crumbled after a while. Now, I suppose a feature like that would be maintainable with enough money to have a guy hand water it three times a day all summer long, but that's crazy. Honestly, with enough money I doubt there is anything we can't maintain. We can control the temps of a rootzone, pump cooled or heated air into a green, make salty water pure, hand mow or hand water any area. So, with enough cash I don't think there is such a thing as an unmaintainable feature.

Elm trees fit this description, however there are a few new strains that are not effected by Dutch Elm disease
