Proof has been received that archaeologists recently uncovered evidence of the very first Stadium Course...

FBD,

When I was there a few years ago, I swear that I could see a level of containment mounding that made Fazio seem like a mere amateur by contrast.  There was also a bit of gratuitous eye candy, and an over reliance of form over substance.  I also thought that some of the sculpturing was a bit over the top.  On the plus side, the spectators seemed to be well taken care of.  All in all, a bit contrived for my taste, but given the severity of the site, a nice place to spend an afternoon or evening.

My recollection is this picture seems to be taken at the same time of day when Devil's Point was visited.

Martin,
I have a funny feeling that the pillars--no matter how tall and strong--would be always viewed as a gimmick in the realm of Great golf architecture. Personally I like em'.

You also would surely have Plateau or Soccrates wanting a design credit. Tell them both to go straight to Hell! Especially when their agents come a calling..........

FBD,

The All Saints Golf Club is rarely mentioned on this site.  I believe its name is derived from Paul's saluation "to all the saints in Ephesus."

I'm fairly confident that the original tee on this hole - #1 if memory serves me correctly, was directly behind the theater on the top of Mt. Pion.  The green was sited within the theater, creating the ultimate punch-bowl.  The tee in the foreground is all that remains of the 565 yards par five 2nd that played along Arcadian Way down to the harbor.  The routing then proceeded counter-clockwise in an out and back configuration later copied at The Old Course.  The 18th hole finished flush against Curetes Street - the original Road Hole.

There is no truth to the myth that the term "links" originated with the ASCC due to the fact that the initial routing linked the three gymnasiums in town.

The male-only membership is a fact, however, as evidenced by Paul's writing:  "Wives, submit to your husbands..."

I understand the course has been completely re-routed to begin and finish at the Temple of Artemis that serves as the present day clubhouse.  What a Turkey.

...Cheers, Gents!

and as for the R&A - well, it's clearly modelled on the Celsus Library, right?

...Martin, you maniac  ;D.

It's funny though....I really kind of like these holes and I'm fighting strong urges to incorporate them in future designs...!

I'm with you Paul.

But I would be tempted to go for the modern version of this meme. Instead of Roman columns, have an Exxon Station back right of the green; a Burger King back left; maybe a hospital maintenance building marking an OB.

An updated, expanded Prestwick concept.

Martin,

I really enjoy trying to guess the green sites.  I have no idea on the first one but is the second the 13th at Kingsbarns?

Or is a Gullane green?

Congrats on the new job.  Ronan and I are over on the 14th of April for the EIGCA AGM, wanna meet up?  We are thinking of having a final night in Edinburgh on the Saturday.

Just a bit of fun amongst the serious business of GCA, gentlemen! ;)

The first is the 6th at - you guessed it! - Pitreavie once again. Another of the fun Par 3s there.
And Brian gets the second one correct. The 13th at Kingsbarns, it is!

Thanks re the congrats on the job, Brian! Will keep you posted. I saw the EIGCA AGM stuff on the website. I would love to meet up with you guys round about then. (For Golf and/or Drinkin' naturally) Might even come along to some of the symposia.... ;)
