Golf between Orlando and Delray Beach

I'll be done with my conference on Friday in Orlando and must  be in Delray on that Monday for another meeting.  That leaves the weekend for golf...I'd appreciate any suggestions or information that you could provide on possible courses or anything of note in the area.

I would start my first day between Orlando and Delray Beach at Walkabout near Melborne (I think) not real far from Orlando and a interesting public course.  I think Jan Stevenson had something to do with the design at least in name.

Dont know the southern part of the state as well.  I am sure someone can chime in.

I assume you werent refering to the private tracks, or that changes everything depending on your access to said courses.

Yes, you are correct.  I don't have access to the private courses in the area.

If you're heading south from Orlando, I would second the Southern Dunes recommendation.  I would also recommend Diamondback which is pretty near Southern Dunes (southwest of Orlando near Haines City).  Diamondback is a Joe Lee design - the best thing about this course is the setting - holes are cut out of the forest, run alongside pastures, and through some rolling, sandy hills.  No houses!  Except for a couple of holes along the road, it feels very secluded.

I've only played Southern Dunes twice (on the same day), but I really liked this course.  Steve Smyers design - lots of bunkers and sandy waste areas.   Greens were in great shape and very fast.  Great food in the clubhouse, too.  The only thing I didn't like here was the encroachment of the houses on the course, but, hey this is Orlando.

Victoria Hills is one of my favorites in the Orlando area, but it's up I-4 towards Daytona in Deland - you'd have to drive a bit in the wrong direction.  It's similar to Southern Dunes in that there are lots of bunkers and sandy waste areas.

You may want to check courses in the Port St. Lucie, Jensen Beach, Palm City area. There are plenty of hotels and some affordable golf.


PGA Village - 3 courses- North & South by Tom Fazio and the Pete Dye Course

The Legacy (FKA The Reserve) is a private club located behind the PGA courses. This was the last course designed by George Fazio and is better than all three PGA courses. The club permits a limited amount of outside play. Contact the Pro Bob LeFleur to make arrangements.

Dye course at PGA Reserve gets my vote.  Hard to get to the 'pike from Southern Dunes and the Walkabout suggestion is taking you out of the way.  Both courses are good.

Dye course at PGA is the site of the yearly Greco Challenge among Father, Son and Grandpa. Always fun and never crowded even during peak. Seems the "members" prefer the Fazio courses which is just fine by us. Also, it is located just off Intst 95 so it's a quick on and off.
