Golf in Hawaii
« on: January 03, 2005, 03:19:23 PM »
This past December i had a wedding in Hawaii.  In eight days I managed to play 17 different courses.  I was expecxting beautiful golf but typical resort golf--good conditioning with 18 "signature" holes but lacking any strategy or penalty for a poorly played shot.  That was true for some courses--ie Kaanapali and Wailea Blue and a couple of others.  I was blown away by both the drama and shot values of the Experience at Koele and the Challenge at Manele.  They are ten miles and a contintent apart in strategy and terrain.
The Prince course may be the most difficult course I have ever played.  If it is not in a class by itself in resistence to scoring it doesn't take long to call the roll.

Makena South may have been the most surprising.  It was very good and I really had not heard much about it.  I missed the Big Island--maybe nest time.

Plantation at Kapalua was as much fun as I have ever had on a golf course.  The terrain is a tad extreme and may not really be best suited for golf, but its routing is ingenious and the ground game a blast.

Also congrats on your wedding- you are one lucky man to be able to play 17 golf courses on your honeymoon!

I thought Kauai Lagoons was very good.  It had a few pedestian holes but also some of the most exciting holes of the trip,, I especially like the way it began.  Relatively beign.  It allowed play to get going on a good pace and gave us a good shance to make a couple of birdies.  The last four or five holes were simple jaw droppingly beautiful and fun to play.  One under on the last four and one under on the first four for a nice 76.
It also has a pretty cool men's locker room, complete with a Roman Bath sans the nymphs.

Oh, I have been married for 36 years.  I went to officiate the wedding of a young woman who has been in my parish for twnety years.  I was with her family during her grandfather's illness and death, and during her dad's illness and deather three years ago.  It was an honor to be eith her on the trip.

I took the groom cliff diving before the wedding and told him this is his last chance to do this kind of thing for a while.

My wife and I got married on Lanai this past August.
I also enjoyed both the Challenge and the Experience.
There is a Shell's Wonderful World of Golf video available through their website featuring Palmer v. Player at the Challenge.

I did play Puakea.  It was a pleasant surprise and a favorite with the locals.  I had not played a Robin nelson course before.  How old is he/she and what other courses has he designed?
