Beverly Country Club - before/after - sixth hole
« on: September 22, 2004, 10:07:26 PM »
Here are the before/ after of the sixth hole at The Beverly Country Club in Chicago.

This is a wonderful downhill par 3 that plays up to 189 yards, dropping some 30 feet from the plateau to the green, to a wonderful Ross push-up green.

Original design - Donald Ross
Restoration - Ron Prichard
Crew - EarthForce - Sid Prichard/Gordon Singer

things to notice here at the sixth:

classic squared tees

removal of awful deciduous trees

removal of willow behind green

tree removal emphasizes the push-up green of Ross

cart path no longer encroaches across the view of the hole  - it's now a crushed granite composite and it's now off to the side

 :) :) :)

Paul,

Hard to tell from the picture, but has the bunker depths (lowered?) or possibly the green surface (raised?) changed?  Because the two pictures are taken from different distances from the green I cannot quite tell.

I like the tree removal...reallt seems to open up the view of the green and make the target actually look SMALLER, imo.

at the sixth, the green surface was expanded back to its original size - probably a good 30% increase.

obviously, a tremendous anount of tree removal was performed - the wiillow, 3 evergreens, etc.

cart path no longer runs across the hole

tee was taken back about 10 yards - back tee raised, front tee lowered

bunkers were changed in style - they look a lot deeper, but that may be more because of the differing style than actual deepening

i agree with your observation - despite making it 'bigger' through green expansion and tree removal, the target actually looks smaller!

The thing I think we have to be careful of is that Ross seems to have been as likely to do both the flashed up bunkers, or the flatish bottom sod faced ones.  He calls some, "scooped out pits" or "sunken, with raised faces".

I wonder if the selection or use of various styles was as much soil dependent, and climate-rainfall amount dependent when Ross considered which style to use?
