St. Enodoc

It looks like St. Enodoc has hired Peter McEvoy (those who went to Painswick will have met him) to do some subtle updating of the course that will not change any of the character of it.  I do know he is proposing a new 16th green complex (my guess is that he will lengthen the hole by moving the green back).. The 16th is one of Golf's Top 500 holes in the world..  I love the current green complex but at 495 yards I guess the club deems it too short and they have no room to move the tee back.

The club sec at St. Enodoc is quite well versed with the club's history and the ethos of the place.  I'm sure the work will go quite well under his stewardship.

I see no point in pushing the green back on the 16th.  Why do clubs try to squeeze length out of their course, when the course is always going to be short?  Plus you'll walk a long way BACK to the 17th tee which is inconsistent with every other walk on the course.

Paul-

You saw one of my few eagles there and I love how the way the land falls into that green complex and some of the bounces you can get from the surrounding sand hills.. I don't know where they intend to put a new green.. I'm trying to remember where they can possibly move it.  It will still be reachable in 2 anyway but I think at 6200 or so yards the club wants to add some length.  The uniqueness of the 16th is that it brings you out of the meadow like terrain thru the parish holes and back to the big dune country.  I love the fact that it has no bunkers either.  I don't like changing holes like that but I can't see where the course can really add distance.  It is a museum piece and should stay that way.. But Tuck is a very good man and I know he understands the situation, the lineage of the club and what he is doing.  When I asked Tom Doak about changing the 16th green I recall him telling me it is all in the execution of the work that will be done--he wasnt outright against it.  RT said something similar although I believe he would leave it alone if he was asked his opinion.

Paul, Noel,

I for one, think it will be hard to screw up #16, since the dunes around it are so formidable.  In other words, when you've got great land, you can do many things that will work.

I played St. Enodoc with Senor Bernhardt, who really loved it, but I was kinda disappointed with holes 9-14.  #16 really gets it going again, so yes, I hope it's not flattened or anything like that.
