Anyone up for GOLDEN HILLS (Ocala) in Nov.?
« on: August 20, 2004, 04:31:54 PM »
I'm just trying to get a feel for whether or not there is interest in a little get-together when Golden Hills reopens.  I'm thinking late-November (obviously not near Turkey Day) or early-December.  Football season and holidays will be taken into consideration.

Golden Hills Golf & Turf Club is an interesting place.  Designed about 40 years ago - the name of the architect is not significant - the golf course boasts an excellent routing over and through pleasant, undulating terrain.

Little attention has been paid to the club in recent years, even in Central Florida.  This is all about to change as an extensive update over the last two summers is about to be completed.  Open Doctor Rees Jones was brought in for a pretty simple renovation, but I'm sure subsequent marketing from the club will try to play up his involvement.

I played the course in April a few days before they ground up the front nine.  From appearances, Jones' task is quite easy... like putting makeup on a pretty face.  The strength of the core routing of Golden Hills is evident to even a novice golfer.  An upgrade of conditioning and update to tee and bunker placement was needed because of the changes in course standards over the last 40 years.

The course operates as a private club, but has accepted some daily-fee play in the past.  It might be presumptuous on my part, but I reckon they'll be open to a group of two or three foursomes this fall to show off their completed project.  I could just have contacted Buckzowski, Felker, and Sarge, but I'm wondering if others might also live close enough to participate.  (Lurker Dr. Andriole will be called if he doesn't see this!)

For those interested in seeing something else in the area, Golden Ocala (private) is across the street and El Diablo (very affordable daily-fee) is just 20 minutes away.  Both are excellent courses.  Also, the Gators host South Carolina on November 13th.

If we do pull this off, no one will be required to use PoDo balls, glass-shafted Golfcraft irons, or a Ping Eye 1-iron.

As I've said, I'm up for anything. We just need to avoid a conflict with the Cuscowilla trip.

Sounds like a great plan.  I played with a gentlemen at WWPB that raved about Golden Ocala and El Diablo and would love to get out there.  The whole Ocala region is really underrated as a golf destination; I can't wait to explore it further.

Pete:

Golden Ocala, Golden Hills, El Diablo - all excellent.  Plus, the CC of Ocala is pretty good and awfully scenic... just too constrictive in places.

Swing a tad south and you pick up the Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks courses at World Woods, the Dunes, and Black Diamond's Quarry course.

You are right, very underappreciated region.

Don't you guys know about the Flat Earth Society. Matt Ward or Tom Doak can tell you all about how flat everything in Florida is.

Sounds good to me. Count me in. I heard of a new course near Citrus Spings (25 min SW of Ocala) called Skyview. It is deigned by Terry LeGree (SP?) and I was told that it is in top condition. By the way, I can report that the WW Pine Barrens greens are playable again, although a little slow. They removed about 250 trees to get more sun/air for the greens. The new superintendant is doing a good job there.

Eric:

I did not realize that Pine Barrens had reopened.  Thanks for the update.  I was wondering what the timeframe was.

Alex:

It might be hard to get two rounds in at that time of year.  Plus, we're talking about unaccompanied rounds on private courses on the weekend.  Golden Ocala fancies themselves as EXTREMELY private.

In the interest of affordability and camaraderie, how about just an afternoon 18 at Golden Hills?  Anyone who wants to play more golf can set that up on their own.  They may even want to book a night at the Ocala Hilton.

I wonder how the NEW Golden Ocala is coming along. I drove my car around it on Christmas day 2002 when it was closed for renovation. the best I could tell they didn't make any architectural changes. I am guessing they just improved the infrastructure and replanted.

The billboards say "homesites starting in the $600's." Seems kind of steep for tha area, but who knows. I guess Black Diamond does OK.

Golden Ocala - an odd club

John:

I was fortunate to get three rounds at Golden Ocala this summer.  The "changes" to the golf course were more superficial in nature: regrassing, completing some of the replica holes (#9 Muirfield, #17 St. Andrews).  It is still the same course.

I share your bewilderment at the price of homes in this development.  There just doesn't seem to be any demand.  As a result, memberships have already been re-priced downward a few times.  (I played with one member, a young doctor, who said it was something like just $10,000 on a "corporate" plan.)  Normal full membership may be as little as $25,000, half what they hoped for.

The owner has deep pockets and doesn't seem to mind.  There are plans for a second course, a few holes already built and used as practice holes.

No matter what is going on there, the golf course is excellent.

77,000 square feet for the clubhouse!!  Oh my.

John,

I would be interested time and date willing...  Its an easy 2 hour (or less) drive for me...  There is a lot of good golf in the (relatively) immediate area...  I know a bit about Golden Ocala, and have played the other courses in the area - but know little about Golden Hills...

Let me know - since I'm fairly local, maybe I can help with logistics...

Steve:

Glad you are on board.  It is a course that won't disappoint.  Where do you live?

Here are the possibles, with actual attendees obviously being affected by potential dates.

John Conley
Sarge John Cullum
Pete Buczkowski
Alex Chehansky
Eric Felker
Steve Lovett
Dr. Joseph Andriole (penciled in even though he hasn't seen the thread yet!)

http://www.goldenhillscc.com/ for those who want to see a little more.  Some back nine photos.

I just called the shop.  The club is closed, but a recording said they will fully open on November 1st.

Start looking at your calendars for November 13th (Sat) or 14th (Sun) in the PM.  Of course, friends welcome.

Any out of area people can fly into Orlando and rent a car in one of the cheapest markets in the country.  If you do, you'll be blessed with some of the "Sixty Perfect Days" of weather that Central Florida enjoys from October 15th through December 15th.

Plenty of outstanding golf in the area.

Steve:

Now I get it.  I think you used to post under SteveL.  I didn't recognize Lovett.

Rob:

The Sohilly.com website mentions something about no dues until 2007 if you join early, so I gather it is still a way off.

To all:

Looking for another area course to play?  I haven't seen it, but the University of Florida course is worth seeing now that there has been an extensive renovation.

I've checked out UF several times in the past year or so. It is not in that great of shape probably because it gets so much play. I have not played because I am pissed off that you or me will have to pay $65.00 to play a six hour round behind a bunch of students and faculty that are only paying $12.00 or so. I think the green fee is too high for what is offered.

Update on potential outing

I called the golf shop today and learned that they are recovering from a lot of debris left in the wake of Frances.  The recording left no word on how this affected reconstruction of the new nine.

I think we'll shoot for the 13th or 14th of November.  More details to follow.

Steve Elling, golf writer for the Orlando Sentinel, is on board as well.
