Re:Cypress Point and playing the ninth....

In my younger days I would blast a driver to try and reach the green but with advancing age and diminishing skills I have, for the last twenty years or so, been reduced to a six iron off the tee and nine iron to the green. Today, with my determination to complete the swing and not act like an old fogey I took out the driver, gave it a bash and was left with fifty yard wedge shot to the upper level.  My question is this, how many of you very fine players and big hitters go for the gusto? The landing area is quite generous and after all these years I am surprised  at this lay up business.

Gentlemen, your thoughts please.

Bob:
The last time there I tried the driver.  Alas even I got into trouble.  But alas when I get the opportunity again I will still use it. ;D ;D
Fairways and Greens,

A few pics of the ninth:

From the fairway:

From the 10th tee looking back (the ghost in the background adds new meaning to the term "lurker"):

From back/left:

Gratuitous arse-pic:  Shivas told me thin to win.  Not at the 9th!

My caddie no doubt won $5 from his fellow looper by insisting I hit 6-iron off the tee.  I am a weenie.

Mike

Mike,

In your defense, there was a small amount of arse-tightening that could have occurred when looking at the tee-shot that day....where is the landing area??  or the green??

The one thing that did piss me off a little bit is that after I told my caddy I was ignoring his advice for 6i, he told me "yeah, I never lay-up either".

Bob Huntley;

There are only 130 posts on this thread.

You West Coast guys have a lot of writing to do to catch up.  ;)

Perhaps you should have titled it, "Did Mackenzie Sell Out?".

A superb par 4, though for a less than a long hitter, it is really a lay-up shot.  I am not sure that one gains that big of an advantage from hitting a chip or a pitch as opposed to a fuller wedge/SW.

Any comparisons to Riviera's 10th?  I like CPC's 9th much better as the second shot, perhaps depending largely on the hole placement, seemed to offer more options and reward proper execution.
