St. Augustine
« on: March 13, 2014, 05:13:54 PM »
I will be moving to the St. Augustine area next month, but have not played any of the courses in the area.  Besides the obvious, TPC Sawgrass and the ones at World Golf Village, can anyone help identify some of the better courses that the locals play?  Any private clubs easier to get on than others?  And, any practice areas I should check out?
Thanks,
Frank

I haven't played it, but I know a lot of people who like Pablo Creek.

If you are looking for some older courses, Hyde Park (D. Ross) and Palatka are fun courses that date back to the 20's...possibly Fernandina Muni.

I lived in Jacksonville for about a year, and there is a lot of golf.  It ranges from quite expensive (TPC) to very cheap (Hyde Park).  I didn't play much in St Augustine, but I would strongly suggest avoiding Royal St Augustine.  They used to have a quarterly golf paper that had all the courses in the area, and the deals they were offering.  I would play all over the place at really good rates.

At the World Golf Hall of Fame, the King and Bear is much better than Slammer and Squire.

There is a group of courses close to I-95 between St Augustine and Jacksonville that are easy to get to and good places to play regularly.  South Hampton, St John's G&CC (careful there are two St John's in the area), and Cimmerone (sp?).  They are all within a couple of miles of each other.  All are modern housing development courses, and not spectacular examples of architecture, but all had good rates (avoid peak hours), and were fun to play somewhat regularly.  Cimmerone's conditions were somewhat of a crap shoot, but the others were always in good shape.  These might be good options from St Augustine.

My favorite in Jacksonville by a mile is Timuquana.  It's an old Ross south of town, and is amazing.  I wish I could play it everyday.

Eagle Harbor and  Fleming Island are near each other, and decent everyday courses.  Eagle Landing is a bit further, but it was a place I played often.  Bent Creek is a good muni, but is also a bit of drive.

There are a bunch of good choices in Ponte Vedra, but most are private or expensive.  The Ocean Course at the Ponte Vedra Inn is good.  Sawgrass Country Club is solid, and very difficult.  Marsh Landing is supposed to be good, but I haven't played it.  Same goes for the Plantation Club or something like that.

The UNF Practice facility (open to public) was a great place to work on your game.

Steve,

Yes, I have played there.  It's a "fun" course. A few very cool holes, pretty good practice facility as well.

Living in St. Augustine, I would highly suggest looking at Palencia, as the drive isn't that bad.

Timuquana is probably the best course and club in the area, but it's a long ride from St. Augustine. As is Pablo Creek (very private)

Sawgrass CC is a really fun course, great range, 3 nine holes, and can be as hard as it comes. When the wind is up (which is often), its a beast. But always seems to be in great condition, and you get to play florida style course, that can turn into british open quickly with the wind (and the many of the holes allow the ground game). But a ton of members!

I'm going to St Augustine in a few weeks.  My line up of golf for 3-4 days is.  Timuquana, Hyde Park, and Palatka.  Palatka looks right up my alley.  Any other low key gems please let me know.

Shucks. I thought we were going to discuss Saint Augustine of Hippo. Guess I'll do that elsewhere.

Take a walk through the mostly abandoned Hyde Park clubhouse and you will think the ghost of St Augustine lives on.  ;)

In St Augustine I would favor Palencia. Unfortunately the Donald Ross 1915 Ponce de Leon/St Augustine Links no longer exists.

Sawgrass and TPC Sawgrass are in Ponte Vedra Beach, maybe 20-30 minutes north of St. Augustine. Both are worth a visit.

At World Golf Village I would favor the King & Bear over the Slammer & Squire.

If you head all the way to Jacksonville it's a 45 minute drive, and you'll find Pablo Creek and Timuquana as the best of the bunch (both private).

Bob,

I'm just looking for a firm course in the sunshine state that's uncluttered  ;)
