Aerial of the Day #307 - 19 Mar 2003
« on: March 19, 2003, 07:03:58 AM »
One more day with not many responses, then tomorrow's
shold generate a few more, I think.  Maybe I'll try to give
easier clues earlier.....

Is this the 4th most beautiful golf course in the U.S.?
According to Gold Digest, it is (not sure who voted, staff of
readers).  And it was designed by a regional architect.

Sorry for the large size, get your scrollbars out to see it all.
Figuring out the setting and the clue will help narrow down
possible locations.

I guess know-it-all bar patrons are welcome here.

Also Samuel Jackson's character in "Unbreakable".

Obscure baseball clue to the town's name:  Tito (not Fuentes).

Does this course have two sister courses that have the
same appellation?

Yes, there are two sister courses to this one, with a 4th
course under construction, in the nieghboring state to the
north.  The newest is designed by a father-son team of pro
golfers.  The other two were designed by an architect who
lives not far from here, and by a guy who was forced to quit
his day job because of something he said.  He also lives in
this area.

The breakable name of this course comes from the mountain
it sits on, not the crystal clear lakes dotting the course.

A fiery LPGA star lives on this course as well.

Steel salesmen/thrill seekers live near here as well.  ;)

Sorry to be late Scott, I can't believe that I actually
have to do some work today!!! >:( >:(

This one is regional for me as I went to college
that area (Go Purple Paladins).  Very nice development
indeed, as are all the others in that area.

I get glassy eyed just thinking of the last time I played
there.   The development to the north of this one is a
good place to enjoy a Dr. Pepper. . .

If you haven't seen an ad in a magazine for this
course/community, then you haven't looked at a golf
magazine in the last 5 years.

The 'Most Beautiful' accolade comes from it's perch atop a
mountain and the beutiful views below of the valley and
above of more mountains.

Haven't heard much of the golf course itself in terms of it's
quality, but what little I've heard means the course doesn't
match the views.

'Claven' is a re-re-re-cycled clue.

When one thinks of this state, one usually doesn't think of
mountains, but it does have them.

A good friend of mine had a college tourney here and he not
only remarked about the beauty and views but also about
how the wind absolutely screamed while he was there.  You
couldn't set your bag down on its fold out stand without
having the wind tip it over and blow it down the fairway  :)

This is the Cliffs at Glassy, in Landrum, SC, designed by Tom
Jackson.  The Cliffs communities have 3 separate locations,
with a 4th coming, each with it's own golf course.  The others
are Cliffs @Keowee Vineyards (Fazio), Valley (Ben Wright),
and the under constructin Walnut Cove (Jack and Gary
Nicklaus) in Asheville, NC.

The Cliffs at Glassy was the first to be built and has had
numverous ads in just about every golf mag, especially Links.

Glassy Mountain is in extreme upstate SC, just a stone's
throw from the NC border.

here is a photo tour (will change automatically or hit 'next'):

from the web site:

other clues include:

rated 4th most beautiful by GD (after ANGC, Pebble, and
maybe Cypress or Koolau, I forget).

Fazio lives not far from here in Hendersonville, NC

Father/son tour pros = Gary and Jack

Jackson is a regional (mid-Atlantic) architect based in Greenville.

Ben Wright =" a guy who was forced to quit
his day job because of something he said.  He also lives in
this area."

"know-it-all bar patron" = "Cliff" "Claven" from Cheers.

"Samuel Jackson's character in 'Unbreakable'." was nicknamed 'Mr. Glass'.

Obscure baseball clue to the town's name:  Tito "Landrum"

"archie design a hoya favorite in VA" = Stonewall?

2 sister courses

"breakable" name

"crystal" clear

"When one thinks of this state, one usually doesn't think of
mountains, but it does have them"=people mostly think of
Myrtle Beach, Hilton Head, or Charleston.

"Furman U." "Paladins" in nearby Greenville.

"Steel Salesman/Thrill Seeker" is Turboe's catch phrase, as
he lives near here.

"glassy"-eyed

"fiery LPGA star lives here" = "Dr. Pepper" = Dottie Pepper
