Title: Buenaventura GC and River Ridge GC both threatened by Auto fire, should be okay.
Post by: Matt Schoolfield on January 14, 2025, 04:18:22 PM
The Auto fire (https://www.fire.ca.gov/incidents/2025/1/13/auto-fire) broke out last night in the riverbed exactly between Buenaventura GC (Billy Bell, 1932) and River Ridge GC's Vineyard Course.

The fire has been contained and remained in the riverbed.

Matt,

I don't believe Buena has reopened from the floods a couple years ago.  I would like to to as it's a sporty course and relieves some of the excess demand.

Buenaventura remains closed after the floods. It’s designed to flood. It’s a floodplain! A large pipe was not maintained well — maybe now it will be as I’m sure the fire will have eliminated the dense brush that kept it hidden. Goes to show the value of golf greenspace during fires. A look at the CalFire maps show how both courses helped contain the fire.

I hope Buena will reopen. It’s a fun course, and we kept a lot of its history when we rebuilt it in 2005.
