Title: OT—NZ and AUS Restaurants
Post by: Ira Fishman on December 28, 2024, 03:51:13 PM
We are leaving Monday for a long planned and awaited trip, but we have given little thought to restaurants. We will be in:

Te Arai
Auckland
Napier
Wellington
Queenstown
Sydney
Flinders
Melbourne

Restaurant suggestions most welcome. We are not looking for fine dining, just good local fare.

Thanks as always.

Ira

The good news is the South Pacific Peso aka the Australian dollar is at recent lows against the USD so whilst things are expensive here, it may not be as bad for tourists.

I can probably help with Sydney, it's a pain to get around the place, do you know where you are staying?

One thing I would recommend is take the Manly Ferry from Circular Quay, go to the beach and if you wanted to eat/drink with locals, go to the Restaurant Manly - Manly 16ft Skiff Sailing Club (https://www.manlyskiff.com.au/)

Napier/Hawkes Bay

Best Cocktail Bar: Teresa Bar
Best local fare: Central Fire Station or Mr. D’s
Best Fancy Winery Dinner: Craggy Range or Black Barn Bistro

Te Arai:  besides the resort, the little pizza place with the big deck in Mangawhai Heads is pretty good.

Auckland:  lots of good choices down by The Viaduct

Queenstown:  Amisfield Winery, which is out past the airport on the way to Arrowtown

Melbourne:  if you like Indian food, it's outstanding just about anywhere you go.  Also Kisume in the city is one of the best Japanese restaurants I've come across.

Mornington Peninsula:  there is really not a lot of good dining down there; the clubhouse at The National has very good food.

In Melbourne

I love Movida & Movida Next door
Lucy Liu also very good

Many many others. Melbourne does food as well as it does golf

In Melbourne, the banquet at Supernormal is superb.  Lots of good affordable eating in Melbourne, St Kilda, South Yarra and the bayside suburbs.

On the Mornington Peninsula, St Andrew's Beach Brewery is a great place for some beers and bar food on a balmy summer evening - and if you're in Flinders a better option than dealing with the traffic and crazy number of people in Sorrento or Portsea at this time of year.

Sydney:

Margaret in Double Bay is my favourite restaurant in town currently.

If you like Asian food, China Doll on Wooloomooloo Wharf and Mr Wong on Bridge St in the city are both great. China Doll is Asian fusion, Mr Wong is more traditional Chinese.

Italian — hit up Alberto’s or Pellegrino 2000, both in Surry Hills.

Steak — Bistecca is the goat. The Gidley also good.

Cafe Sydney is the classic “I’m in Sydney!” spot. Views of the Opera House and Sydney Harbour Bridge. Food is very good too.

Go to Bill’s in Surry Hills for breakfast. It very well might be the best breakfast restaurant in the world.

Some great pubs and bars in Paddington. The Clock and The Dolphin in Surry Hills also v good.
