Title: Golf course with the most stairs
Post by: Matt_Cohn on July 16, 2020, 12:48:12 AM
This came up in a conversation today. Mayacama was offered as one candidate—there are stairs in some form on at least 9 of the holes, ranging from a few steps up to a tee to some long sets (80+ steps) up and down hills. What other golf courses might have more stairs?

Very good question, which I've never been asked.  I will have to think about it.

One clarification:  do stairs going DOWN count?  If so, I might break the record in Napa.

Also, as an aside, there were a bunch of golf courses built in the mountains of Japan in the late 1980's that had several people-movers or even escalators from a golf hole on one shelf to the next shelf.

Tim,
I, too, immediately thought of Yale. Your list of holes includes some that once had stairs, like holes 9 and 11, which once had steps down the hill from the tees that are now just gravel declines. And there aren't any steps on 15.

However, you didn't include the steps on the front of the back tee on 12.
And the steps from 13 tee through the forest.

There are some links courses out there with steps down into the bunkers. If you're talking about the most sets of stairs, I'd think one of those would likely be leading. If you're talking about the most steps, I have no idea.

Town & Country in St. Paul sure has a lot of steps. It's course goes in and around a big ravine and there are some serious stairs going up to the 2nd tee, up to the 11th tee, and down toward the 18th tee.

I don't know about most stairs as I can't recall all the holes, but at Cathedral Lodge in Australia there were several holes that had big elevation changes with stairs as I recall.

Yes, down counts! People-movers get their own category.

Bel-Air (if there was no elevator)
