Thanks for posting. Looks lovely and indeed the vegetation does very much remind of parts of the UK. What's the turf like ?

funny thing is that Bandon is not like the UK

Looks very exciting. May have missed it elsewhere but what is the acreage that the course is built on?

Really ? that's interesting. And how does it differ ? Different shape, size, colour or what ?

Niall,
Come on out and you’ll see and experience for yourself.
That discussion would be had sans typing and in person.

Thanks William,
Bandon has never been near the top of my “must visit” locations for various reasons. That’s not to say I wouldn’t love to make it there someday, especially now that there is a really intriguing looking bunkerless course on a compact site...
Will be really interested to hear the average round times, if they are less than the other courses and if the flow feels effortless.
-
If you want to play quickly they need No Camera Tuesday's.

For many, many years I felt the same, as it's actually easier and faster to take an over night flight to the UK/Ireland from New York
Then I went..in February
and again in January
Spectacular and I like the town as well (rented an oceanfront house with spectacular views for off season peanuts)
never had a problem with pace-under four as a fourball with random pairings
-
Different for you though, Jeff.
My US trips are more based around classic parkland / inland courses as I can play links golf every day of the week.
If I were to do a resort trip, it would probably be East Coast first. Maybe Cabot or Pinehurst.

William
Are you at all familiar with the concept of an on-line discussion board ?
Niall
-
Niall,
Please don’t go that route, so weak.
Typing is not discussing even if labeled discussion.
I’m iin Bandon now and the Pacific is cold wet and gray. The resort is buzzing with happy people who all have made the trek to Mecca.
The sandy bluffs are green with fescue, Poa, gorse, shore pines and scotch broom.
5 courses all wonderful, no buggies, huge practice facility with a wonderful 9 hole practice course.
Feel like a beautiful 13 hole par 3 course, got that.
Sheep Ranch has long been an UTR 13 green layout on the sandy bluffs above the Pacific at 5-mile point, a beautiful beach and rock formation millions of years old.
Now On 140 acres is a uniques bunker less course That I can’t to play on Monday along with many others and 3 good friends plus plus plus.
Love that sound of that huge waves crashing in the morning, indescribable.
LHR to PDX and drive
Cheers

Thanks William, let's just leave it at that.

They’ve updated their website and now have yardage guide and flyovers for Sheep Ranch. Ready for another round!

I can't put my finger on it, but I have not experienced Bandon in my three trips there in a similar way to those to the British Isles. Maybe it has to do with the stand-alone resort aspects of Bandon. Perhaps it is because the weather has typically been rather extreme there. I can't fault the courses at all, they are all outstanding, but every time I've left Bandon I thought that it would be for the last time. Even before leaving the BIs, I am already thinking about my next trip.
P.S.- can't wait to return to Bandon
-
looks kinda stupid from the photos, I'm sure it is not
-
I was booked for Bandon and Sheep Ranch in April but of course it all went to hell in a handbasket. Much as I have enjoyed Bandon in the past I prefer Scotland for many reasons. I love the variety of courses, the towns, the pubs, the people who see golf as a natural part of life.
That said, the turf at Bandon is really good, and that to me is a key to the proper feel of a shot. Though reading the posts on turning turf and creating all those micro-undualtions I thought were natural has opened my eyes. But as to turf- the turf at Sand Valley is as good as I've seen in the US.

This place looks pretty breathtaking.

-another home run, grand slam for the most pleasant man in golf, Bill Coore, he was on site all day Monday enjoying all the smiles on people's faces
-Bandon Dunes Resort is a must visit for anyone who considers themselves an avid golfer
-Sheep Ranch was sunny and beautiful Monday in a 20 MPH wind, loved it, as did everyone
-my caddie Kris, said the she would likely play this more than any other course on site
-every hole is wonderfully memorable in a brilliant routing using several of the green sites from 1.0
-best golf resort in the world is not an overstatement but the truth known to those who've visited and bounced the ball along the distinctive turf at Bandon

Thanks for the photos from the ground. All I've seen previously were drone shots, which look incredible. Outside of the ocean views, the ground level photos don't look especially compelling. This isn't all that surprising as sand bunkers do help define things more and provide some drama. Obviously, the test is really in how the course plays, and it's hard to imagine C&C not delivering an excellent experience. I'm sure it is a worthy addition to the resort. One great feature of Bandon is in the variety of the courses and how different people can have different favorites, and seems like the newest will add to the competition.
I've only visited Bandon once (for the opening of Old Mac). While I enjoyed the golf, I did not get smitten like I have with pretty much everywhere I've been in the UK. For me, the connection with the town is part of the charm, and Bandon really just felt like a resort (a great resort, but still a resort). Having read Jeff Warne's post, maybe I need to come in winter and stay in town.
Like Lou, I'm sure I'll be back to Bandon one of these days, but fortunately they are doing pretty well without me.
LHR to PDX seems a very hard sell, though. There's too much compelling golf that is closer and cheaper.

Ally,
If you pick North Carolina, let me know so we can try to connect. I would enjoy hosting you at Hope Valley. And I am sorry that the pandemic prevented us from meeting up in Dublin this month.

I've been to the resort several times and would certainly agree it doesn't feel connected to the town in any meaningful way. Other than the fact its more than 5+ miles away from the main area of Bandon, most out of area folks fly in to Portland and drive down from the north and likely never see the town.
Throw in discount round pricing for staying at on site lodging and preferred tee times, with the various restaurants and other on site activities, seems pretty clear they encourage staying on property for the entire visit.
Its not a negative on the place at all, it still has a special/ magical quality to it every visit.

Inexplicable. Why would a member of North Berwick with easy access to the greatest links right in his backyard travel a full day for a faux experience? Maybe once in a lifetime, but twice in four years? I guess that there is great truth in the adage about the grass being greener on the other side of the pasture, But we are talking about a lot of pasture here.
-
I’m going for the meatloaf, the golf’s just incidental. If I could afford it Lou I’d make a yearly pilgrimage.

This is a video I made demonstrating the process 5+ years ago. Still relevant, though Photobucket is not really a common upload site any more (they went to a pay model and got abandoned by everyone).

I use https://postimages.org/ (https://postimages.org/) as a quick and easy single photo upload site. I will post a quick video on how to use it, instead of Photobucket.

Here is the video that goes with the above picture. Note that there is a "picture" icon above for posting pictures, but it never seems to work for me. Also, just to amplify...at the beginning of the link, you need to add [imq] and at the end [/imq] ...substituting a 'g' for the 'q' in the text I just used.

variety is the spice life Lou
someday Bandon will not be considered new as far as links courses go
and I travel to the UK and Ireland with Bandon in my backyard, LOL

apparently social distancing restrictions are not enforced.

Pete,
-I don't think taking a few pics because we are having fun rises to the level of riot gear and policeman.
-Beautiful Oregon is now entering Phase 2 in most counties and we have the 4th lowest incidence of the virus of any state.
-The hospitals are empty and all my doc friends don't have the science to support 72" anyway, politics.
-I've been walking 2 miles each way to the office and back everyday for 3 months and giving thumbs up to every police person I see.
-Much more worried about our society, civil war, and anarchy.
-Stay healthy and stay home Pete

yes Lou please answer the question, this is a discussion board hahahaha

William,
Thanks for posting thoughts / photos!
Lou, it is funny, I did have that thought for a while, but the pull there is proving too strong. I like the idea of staying in one place and getting to play 6 fantastic golf courses without driving. I am just about ready to pull the trigger on booking a trip, but am waiting for the 14-day quarantine to lift here, and then I'll be booking.
In addition to London > Portland, I see that KLM also goes from Amsterdam, which is easy to get to from Edinburgh!
