Title: Revisiting Aronimink
Post by: mike_malone on June 10, 2018, 10:34:05 PM
I was asked to share my thoughts after playing Aronimink today since they did so much work on the course.

I think the holes look more individualized now and while the manufactured look is not my style the course has a championship feel about it.

The tree management is outstanding. I thought Philly Cricket took too many out and barely looks like a parkland course now. Aronimink struck a nice balance. Some views through the course are spectacular.

I enjoyed the tee work. Number 10’s new angled tee was a pleasant departure from the rectangular boredom of so many courses. I loved the new angle on 17.

The integration of green and tee added on 12/13 I think was engaging.

The fact that it was overcast and sometimes raining made the sight more pleasing than a bright sunny day.

The good company and competition added to a favorable feeling. Dan Boerger’s friendly greeting put off my critical game.

Thanks for your thoughts Mike. Great comments ... and I fully agree with you about wholesale tree removal. Don't know if you recall it, but the run up to #4 used to really pinch in. The wider and more original opening is better, IMO. Also, the expanded landing areas on #16 are really welcome by me.

Hopefully you won your match.

Playing it Friday, lets see if we agree. Personally I like the sun out but that's a personal choice.

The greens are the standout championship feature and they are framed nicely by the new work.

I played the pre-Hanse Aronimink probably half a dozen times, and other than the greens, was never super impressed. I would much prefer both Rolling Green and Gulph Mills over Aronimink, with a split for each being 8-2, easily.

Mike, I know the RG bias might make your assessment impossible, but what do you think the Hanse work would do to my 10-round split??

I play RG everyday and Aronimink once a year.
