Title: Regrets
Post by: Joe Leenheer on September 08, 2012, 11:36:11 PM
I passed up playing Cypress Point because it didn't fit my travel plans.

Oak Hill because of family obligations.

LACC & Merion because of short notice.

Please let me know others have made poor decisions as well!

some tough sledding, hope your decison making improves in respect to golfing opportunities.  Once I turned down Pine Valley cause we were going to play Sunday with Buddy and then he had to regret us.  but we played Congressional again so it wasn't a complete disaster.

Bill - I'm with you there, a good friend invites me to Sand Hills every year, it will happen soon. Turned down a long weekend at National Golf Links in August with good friend plus a boys trip to Congressional, Chechesse and Kinloch in late Oct, this is a going to be a 2013 trip though!

Wisest turn down? Arrived at Merion at 4pm straight from the airport, had the option of running around the course to fit in the round (@ $220 plus caddie) or play a 4 1/2 hole loop, drinks and dinner on the patio and a proper tour of the clubhouse. This turned out to be a splendid evening and a cherished memory.

I was on vacation in Oregon in 2009.  Trying to save money, we didn't bring our golf clubs.

Well, we're driving down US101 and there's Bandon.  We stop in, and visit the shop/cafe by the 1st tee at Bandon Trails.  The tee is wide open and calling to us.  Of course, the Bandon staff were amazingly nice and offered to set us up with equipment.

We passed, but I still wish we had taken them up on it (of course, it would have cost us money we didn't have!).

Back in 2004 I canceled a trip out to Eastern Long Island because I couldn't really afford it, broke assistant pro.   I was going to play Westhampton, Southampton and Atlantic.  Fast forward to today and Westhampton & Southampton are two of the few Raynor's I haven't played and I keep hearing good things about Atlantic!

I was in Australia with my wife and I had one day I could play on our trip in Sydney. Trouble was it was not a visitor day at NSW so I played St. Michaels instead.  :'(

Also in my less educated days I went to Monterrey. Spyglass was unavailable so I played Spanish Bay instead, and I chose to play Poppy Hills after my Pebble round because I did not think there was enough time to get up to play Pasatiempo. ??? Still have nightmares about that one.

Sometimes the opposite happens.  you end up playing a great course with the wrong people and it's worse than never playing it to begin with.  And I'm serious.  So for me, who I choose to play with has much more to do with "regrets on a golf course" than spending money to travel to play some special course with the wrong group.  JMO.

I passed on an invite to Chicago Golf because of a pee-wee soccer game. I still hold it against my daughter.

Jimbo - Your a better man for it!!

Sand Hills because I was training for a marathon.

Winged Foot because I already had committed to a buddies trip to AC.

Olympic because had to get back from the west coast for a school concert.

Kittansett because of my daughters softball game.

Last Friday Oak Hill because I did not want to bail on a round with a friend I committed to.

None of these are regrets - just choices - better choices.

I have two.

Was invited to play in the North/South and declined so I could go to Las Vegas for a wild weekend.  The weekend was just OK.

One year while I was in college a good friend invited me to go to the Masters, stay in a members home and play Augusta on the following Monday.  In all honesty, I couldn't afford it so I declined.

Once when I was finishing up a 10 day consulting trip in the Bay Area, I got a call from a very nice friend who lives in SF who offered some golf if I stuck around.  I was in the SFO airport waiting for my plane.  What would you have done?

The Offer:  Cypress, Pebble and Spanish Bay all expenses paid including a house on the shores of the Pacific.

I still remember telling him sorry,  maybe next time for which I knew would never happen again.  I then proceeded to cry.

For a number of years I received an invitation to play in King Hassan's tournament at the Royal Dar es Salam Golf Club in Rabat. Unfortunately I had to decline for a few years; when my wife expressed a desire to go to Morocco I waited anxiously for our annual invitation. It never came.

There is a good look at the course on You Tube. It seems more like a botanical garden than a  serious test of golf but the pros never chewed it up

Jim-this story leaves me feeling slightly better about the one time I got to play at Cypress Pt. My teacher at the time got an invite from the assistant pro. For some reason, I felt it necessary to attend to an 'urgent' client matter in my office in San Francisco before leaving for Monterey Peninsula... As a result, I did not leave work until about 3pm.

By the time I got to the course, there was only enough daylight for nine holes..

The Front 9.

Mullen, Nebraska

Didn't understand the arrangements at Sand Hills. Didn't know you could play all day, from dawn till dusk, for whatever the rate was. ($100, I think.)

Rick Shefchik and I arrived midday, one day; had to leave midday the next.

Played only about 54 holes, if I remember right. Coulda played twice that.

Damn.

If it makes you feel better, Mark, Ari is a much, much better golfer than you! ;D You both have unconventional swings and Scratch irons, but that's where the similarity ends!

PS -- if it was a nett match, you were almost certainly getting too many shots from him, so it's only right that he rallied to beat you!

Can't personally think of a regret big enough to mention. Biggest is missing Castle Stuart when I roadtripped from London to Dornoch with Whitty and Andrew Mitchell and had to leave a day earlier than them, but really, that's not too much of a regret in the grand scheme of things.

My deepest golf regrets all surround NLE's.
I grew up in an area (Central Indiana) that went through a quite delightful spell of very high-quality golf course construction in the last quarter century.  The courses are terrific and for that I and many others are thrilled.

But in several cases, building new tracks meant obliterating old ones.
Gone are the original courses at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Fort Benjamin Harrison, and Woodland Country Club.

And I never played them.

I lived a chunked 3 iron from Woodland, so I could easily have hopped the fence and played it as a kid.  And I threatened to do just that several times, but I never did.  I guess I regret my lack of delinquency.

Speedway was very easily accessible, but trips to the track at tat time of my life only meant roaring motors and track records; as a teenager it honestly never occurred to me to play golf there.

The original course at the Fort would have been a tougher task for a teenager - it was an active military base and restricted in the usual fashion.  But still...

There were two other NLE's that I did play frequently - Sunblest and Sycamore Springs.  The former was -objectively- awful... but it was mine.
The latter was better than it had a right to be, though it stood no chance when developer dollars came calling.  I have enough memories of both to miss them, so there are no regrets.

As for more conventional regrets?  I had an opportunity to play Sanctuary a year or so after it opened, then I tore my ACL, MCL, and PCL trying to score on a passed ball in a 30+ league baseball game.  I guess I regret the steal.  It was karma - we were up 9 and I was trying to end it early.  Instead, the golf and baseball Gods conspired to punish my lack of sportsmanship doubly hard.

I was also kindly offered a round of golf at Denver Country Club.  The gentleman extended the offer on the tee of the 17th.  Then I closed him out on the green of the 17th and he acted like we'd never met.  I didn't push it, but I do hope to play there some day.

Pat,

Did he play in 1971? I am glad I wasn't there. An attempted coupe de'tat by some senior offices in the Army struck and some 92 people diied and many were injured. A year later he was flying back to Rabat in his 727 and was attacked by 3 F-5s who started to strafe the plane. The pilot radioed the attackers telling them the king was dead, they stopped tne attack and returned to base. A big mistake;they were executed three days later.

Can't think of any real regrets regarding golf.  Practically all my regrets revolve around not seeing certain musicians when I had half or even the slightest chance.  While I was a bit too young to really go too much out of the way, I still regret not ever making it to a Muddy Waters or Bill Evans gig.  More unforgivable because I could easily have seen him, was never going to a Johnny Cash show - the stupidity of youth.  I spose never seeing Frank Sinatra is right up there in the stupidity stakes as well.  There are a few others as well, but lets not dwell too much in the past.

That I took up the game pretty hot and hard in High School and then during College and a few years after played almost no golf , too much money, too little access, too little time .... whatever, I really regret that now that I am in my late 50's.

I regret that I spent 4 years in Ann Arbor and didn't set foot on the golf course.

When I was 16 I made the Canadian Junior team which would play the US team at St. Andrews. The matches were played on the New Course but they did play TOC and Carnasty right after the '99 Open.

At the time I was trying to get a scholarship to the University of Washington. So I passed on that event and instead played in another team event in Denver with lots of good talent and coaches.

I regret it but I don't know if I would have appreciated the courses in Scotland. At the time I was playing modern designs from Les Furber and didn't like the older designs. I hated Victoria Golf Club because it was tricked up!

But my tastes have changed and I've matured. Looking forward to a Scotland trip soon!

Met an R and A member in a bar once.  Great guy, funny, etc.  He asked me to dinner and i turned him down.  Still regret that one.

I interviewed for a job at a golf course where the golf committe chairman had just gotten in to ANGC.  My potential boss told me that we would be going down to play it that winter.  I ended up turning the job down :'(
