GCA'ers,
I'll be in Charleston tomorrow through Sunday for a wedding and am curious as to your suggestions for sneaking in a round. I am familiar with Yeaman's Hall & CC of Charleston but little else. What else is there that should not be missed (IF I have the chance!)?

On such short notice and assuming you're on a time crunch check out the Charleston Muni. It's a fun, old, throwback which was designed with input from Raynor (some of his features are there if you look hard enough). It's inexpensive and can get crowded later in the day, but it's not much more than 15 min from downtown.

Bulls Bay is marvelous. Non-private, there's the Links course at Wild Dunes, which is quite good earlier Fazio (shaped by Mike Strantz, who did Bulls Bay).

I enjoyed my round at The Muni several years ago. As basic public/muni tracks go, to me it played better than most.
For one thing they seemed to do a good job (that day at least) of having Bermuda rough thick enough to affect your shot but short enough you could still see the ball from 20 yards away. That's seems surprisingly hard to do on public course budgets but it's a great feature when there's a full tee sheet all day. And the pace of play was quite reasonable even though it was a fairly crowded Friday afternoon. It also seemed not as poorly draining as a lot of Lowcountry courses, even ones with much stiffer green fees.
The bad feature is that busy (high speed) two-lane road you must cross to go play a couple of the hole. Be very careful crossing!

South of town you could try Stono ferry. North of town you can find a club called Rivertowne

When I played it, Bulls Bay was private.
The obvious choice is the Ocean Course if you can swing the time and the $.

Bulls Bay is marvelous. Non-private, there's the Links course at Wild Dunes, which is quite good earlier Fazio (shaped by Mike Strantz, who did Bulls Bay).
I absolutely loved Bulls Bay, though if memory serves, last year they were dramatically modifying their greens (I think they were switching from Bent to some other grass) but I could be mistaken. It is a really fun place to play on top of the fact that the course itself is really interesting. If you've never seen one of his courses, you should go check it out.

I will echo the positive reviews of Bull's Bay. Ample driving zones to offset the windy nature of the unusually elevated property. Some really good quality fun holes out there. The tee shots that play off the clubhouse hill are really quite fun.

Did Bulls Bay switch to Bermuda? It would only make sense in that climate.

I played Bulls Bay a few weeks ago, and was told they switched to Bermuda last year. Greens rolled nicely and were VERY firm, no ball marks to fix and hard to hold. I loved everything about the course, club and experience, if there is an American course with wider fairways I need to find it!
