All yardages are from back tee to middle of green
HOLE 1
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000040.jpg)
A straight-forward hole with only one trick: the green is about 50 yards deep, which you cannot tell from the tee.
From the middle tee, you can see the Trails practice green left, how deep the bunkers are in front, and you can sort of make out how deep this green really is. The green extends all the way back to the dip between the dunes straight back from the center pot bunker.
The bunkers are probably the worst places to miss the green. (being on the dunes or being down left isn't great either)
Now you can see how deep this green really is. From the back edge. You can also see that there is not a ton of slope in the green. The general slope of the green is right to left, with some ridges that divide the green into lower left sections and higher right sections.
On dunes to the right of the green. Another way to see how deep the green is, and see the ridges in the middle of the green that divide the green high right and low left again. You can also slightly see the steep fall-off to the left of the green, which is between the two pictures.
Overall - misses left and right of the green are in trouble. Misses short in the bunkers are in trouble. But accuracy is much more important then distance-control as the green is deep and fairly flat. Birdie hole.
-
Is there a drop zone from the practice putting green for balls that are deflected down there?
-
HOLE 2
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000052.jpg)
Two things you immediately see when you step up on the tee. The OB right and the extremely deep bunker short (possibly the deepest on the course).
The bunker is very deep.
The bunker left is not so bad unless you stay on the side-slope.
From the back-edge. Due to the shadow, you cannot see the divided green. It is divided into high back and right sides and a low left bowl.
Overall - Both accuracy and distance-control must be right when you hit your tee shot. The only real bail-out is long, and that is not a guaranteed up-and-down. Even if you hit the green, you have the divided and contoured green to deal with. Difficult right hole location on the right as it is a high spot and OB just right of green. A par hole.
-
Is there a drop zone from the practice putting green for balls that are deflected down there?
As of now: no.
-
HOLE 3
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000057.jpg)
Another deceptive green. It extends further left and right then you can see. There is a hidden bunker right and a huge drop-off right. The green funnels off the front left, the front edge, and the right side except where the bunker is. The biggest trick once again, though, is the green extends further back then it looks. The green is about 35 yards deep.
The false front.
The collection area front left.
The bunker right.
The fall off right. You can see the fall off is on either sides of the bunker. Being in the bunker when missing right is the best place to be (you can't say being in a bunker is the best place to miss it very often).
From the back edge. You can see how far back the green extends. The back portion is in a low area, with the fall off right looming plus the false back edge.
Overall - Hard to hit, for sure. Fall offs short left, short, right, and long. Green is fairly flat, sloping left to right. There is the ridge dividing front and back, too. If it is dead calm and you are accurate from 85-105 yards, birdie hole. If one of those two is not true, good luck making par.

Any thought given to "fore left" off the first tee? Pulls or hooks and whammo! lawsuit.
-

So true.

HOLE 4
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000065.jpg)
A hole that is right in front of you, except for the small hidden portion left. Heavily contoured, and shares the green with #7 which you can see on the right behind the tree.
From a tee box forward, you can see the left portion of the green more.
Front right to back left. You can see the buried elephants.
Standing at junction between the #4 and #7 double green to back left.
On dune behind green looking towards front right.
On dune behind looking toward front left.
Left edge looking to right.
On #5 tee, looking at green from left to right.
Overall - Distance control is probably the most important as it is not very deep; however, with all of the ridges that divide the green left and right, accuracy is important, too. If you hit the green, you must have touch when going over the ridges. If you hit it in the right section, it is probably a birdie as other than the ridges, the green is fairly flat. If it is dead calm and you are accurate from 105-120 yards, birdie hole. If one of those two is not true, good luck making par.
Note: the construction you can see on some pictures short-right of the hole is the construction of the half-way house. It is accessible on hole 4, after 7/before 8, and after 10/before 11.

Great pictures! I'm looking forward to playing Preserve in July. It appears thus far the only option off the tee is throwing the ball up into the air. Do you have the option off the tee to skip it in low on any holes? Does the contouring around the greens allow you to aim away from the hole location and use the various slopes to work the ball back to the stick?

Hole #5, which I am about to post, is a hole where the low shot, IMO, is the best shot. On all of the holes you are able to use the bank where the dunes cut into the green, but the best option, IMO, is to go directly at the flag (unless it is in a sucker spot; then you may go a little away from it).

HOLE 5
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000076.jpg)
Your first clear view of the ocean. DO NOT let the ocean make your mind wonder as this is one of the trickiest holes of them all. Knowing what is going on with this hole before you play it will greatly help you. The green is fairly large. The bunker you see on the right is way short of the green. The run-up area and front part of the green is blocked out, as you can see. IMO, the best shot into this hole is a low run-up, which you haven't been able to before this hole.
The next tee box up is to the right of the back tee box, offering a different angle.
The next tee box up is an even different angle and gives a completely different view to the hole. The bunker short left isn't really in play.
Front left to back right. You can see the huge swale that divides the green in half. BEWARE going any more left than where this picture is.
The enormous fall off left. It makes pins on the left side of the swale extremely difficult.
Side Note: The area where picture is taken and where balls would end up are a couple of the 6th hole's tee boxes.
The bunker down left of the green.
Back left looking towards back right.
Back left towards front left. You can see the drop off left.
Back right towards front right. You can see the expanse of run up available if you want to use it on the tee shot. The right side of the swale is divided into a lower front right and a higher back right.
One last look. Back right to front left.
Overall - As the green is very large, IMO, it is a birdie hole. Even if it is windy and you are not accurate from 150 yards, it is very hard not to hit the green if you aim for the center. Even an o.k. shot is a par, maybe a bogey. It is the really bad shots that will do bad on this hole.

I'm done posting pictures for a while, so start posting any other questions or comments you want.
-
This is actually extremely hard to answer... It is a links course to the core, but playability-wise, you could argue either way. On some holes there is no where short of the green to bounce it on while others it could be the preferred way to play. I am actually going to post a photo tour of almost every angle imaginable of the course (there has been photos of the course on other threads but not all the holes have been shown) later, so the pictures may help answer your question.
Please do! Looking forward to that.
By the way Alex, here it is. Just as I had promised.

Great pics! Quick question -- is this the land of what was/is known as the Sheep Ranch?

Matthew:

I don't know. To tell the truth, I have no idea what the Sheep Ranch is. What I do know is that the area was a left over piece of land that Coore and Crenshaw had when building Trails, so they just built the par 3 course on it.
What you can't see in my pictures is how crammed in this course is, so I'm not surprised the land wasn't used for Trails.
-
Wonderful tour so far. Looking forward to the other holes and insights.

No, it's not the same land. Sheep Ranch still exists.

Just played Preserve about 3 hours ago - it's really cool.....absolutely everything you'd expect - and then some.
Few things stood out as I was getting absolutely soaked:
-Insane views
-2 or 3 holes where you can only see the top of the flag - really cool hitting into unknown, pretty wild slopes...so fun.
-Huge tees - will make for nice variation
-Greens are amazingly fun...

Haha, thanks Michael!
Looks like a lot of fun. I love C&C, but truth be told the front center bunker on the first tee shot perturbs me a bit. Just seems unnecessary, especially for the opening hole. Hate to nitpick, but I'm sure it's a blast to play!

Alex,
the first hole is so short as is the course, the front bunker on #1 is just game on visually from the start, love it!

How well did it play?? Did you have fun...even though you got soaked?? Would you play it again?? Favorite hole?? Least favorite??

My bad. Fingers got away from me there. Carry on!

My bad. Fingers got away from me there. Carry on!
You'll have to forgive Alex the occasional confusion. With the way this baseball season has started, a number of us Angels fans aren't really thinking clearly.
The pictures look awesome, but is a 13 hole par three course worth what they're going to be getting for it? I can see playing it once for the novelty, but that's a fair amount of dough for a course that, although very fun-looking, sits on the site of four other very fun courses.
-
This is making me even more excited to play this course. I have admired it several times before from afar, but I am excited that soon it will be open to the public. This is going to be a great addition to the Bandon family.

Bill, I have played Bandon several times and I can say that I am really excited to play this. There are some days that you just don't feel like doing 36 holes and there have been times I have finished 36 and wanted to play more. With them making the 3rd round free I think this will see quite a bit of play, either as an alternative to 36 holes (it is reasonably priced in the winter $50) or as a 2nd or 3rd round on those long summer days.

Why is there an impact board on each tee box? I assume that is from your group, are you using it as an indicator of the direction of the hole for the benefit of the photograph?

Mike,
All preview play was from a lie board as the turf needs maturing a bit. Remember, it's fescue, so it doesn't repair as quickly as others. I guess they are still using lie boards for preview play until the opening next week.
Jim Tang,
There is plety of run up on 4 and 5. I wouldn't choose to on 1, 2 or 3, but it's possible to do it on 1 as well. Once the course firms up, landing short will be imperative #5 and possible even #4, depending on wind.

Well, that sucks ...

I am going to post more in a few hours.
Also, don't think I'm stupid for misspelling Preserve......... :-\

HOLE 6
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000088.jpg)
It feels like a corridor. Trees left and high dunes right. There have been tricks to every hole and this hole is no different. The green side bunker of #5 acts slightly as an allusion bunker (looks close to the green) to the tee shot. The big trick is (once again) how deep the green is. 40 yards with 4 bunkers along the left, even though you can only see two.
A couple of tee boxes up, the hole is much clearer. The third bunker on the left is visible and you can see the big false-front.
Looking at the front of the green from first bunker.

From dune on right looking at front and center of green.

From dune on right looking at back of the green.
Overall - An extremely slender green and fairly bumpy. I would be happy with a par.
-
HOLE 7
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000102.jpg)
While I usually end with what I think the score needed is, I am going to say it now. GOOD LUCK MAKING PAR!!! Huge false front, thin green, and little bailout (the connection between the #4 and #7 greens).
Do not come up short.
Looking from right to left. Now you can tell just how thin the green is with the false front. I hope balls roll back off of the backboard.
The bunker long is no easy up and down, either, as you must be able to stop your ball in a very short amount of time.
Standing on #4 green/the junction. If you bail out back here, you have a roller coaster putt.
Left edge looking towards right. Better hope your ball gets stopped by the backboards.
Note: there is this tucked pin location on the left behind the knob.
Overall - I already mentioned it. PAR; That is all I am thinking of on that hole.
-
HOLE 8
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000109.jpg)
The shorty.
The blind front left part of the green is in a bowl.
You can see the massive dividing ridge in the middle of the green.
The bunker is probably the worst place to be if the pin is on the right.
But if the pin is on the left, the bunker is not so bad.
Another view of the massive dividing ridge.
Back right looking towards the front left.
Overall - "so easy a caveman could do it." ;) If the hole is on the left, it is hard not to make birdie. If the hole is on the right, it takes more mental focus and a little bit better shots to make birdie. A definite birdie hole.
Dare - If someone plays it and the hole is on the left, I dare you to try putting it down into the front left part. 8)
-
HOLE 9
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000117.jpg)
The most picturesque hole, although #5 is pretty nice, too.
Very straight-froward hole with only one visual trick; the views. Beware of OB right.
From a few tees forward, you can see the false front.

The bunkers are bad places to miss.

Green looking from back to front. It is a little bumpy. There is a slight false back.
Overall - If it is dead calm and you are accurate from 115-145 yards, birdie hole. If one of those two is not true, good luck making par.

HOLE 10
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000127.jpg)
No, this is not a game of "Where's Waldo?" The green is completely blocked out and it is even hard to see the top of the flagstick in the picture.

While there are some little bumps on the right that keep your ball on the green, if you go right of those, you are left with this.

Overall - The green has a downslope in front. After that, it is fairly flat, possibly allowing shots to the front hold. From the center to the back, the green is very bumpy. If it is dead calm and you are accurate from 95-135 yards, birdie hole. If one of those two is not true, par is a good score.
-
How bout that 7th green!? I have to admit, I underestimated this course. I'm kicking myself for not at least walking it when I out in Bandon last fall.
-
If you thought 7 was hard (I do), then the next hole is difficult.
HOLE 11
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000138.jpg)
A very difficult hole. If the course had handicaps, i think this would be the handicap 1. OB left with an angled green. If the wind is blowing from the north, the tree might come into play. The bunker on the right isn't in play if you hit a solid shot; however, if you bail out right during the middle of your swing and don't hit the shot right, the bunker may come into play.
From a few tees up, the angle of the hole no longer exists. You can also see the tree isn't that close to the green.
If you do happen to end up in the bunker, an up and down is almost impossible.
Looking from front right to back right. The green is severely contoured.
Front right to back left. The heavily guarded left side is even more contoured.
Front left to back left. There is a bowl in the front left. The slope you see falling off left of the green is not rolling into OB but...
...deep bunkers. They are located to the back left.

Front left corner to front right. A collection area at the front right corner.
Looking back. It reminds me of a picture someone submitted for photo of the year last year. The tree is not as close as it looks in the picture. The Bandon Dunes #17 green is located on upper right corner (for anyone who does not know exactly where Preserve is).

Overall - PAR hole. Even on a dead calm day, it is a par hole. If is windy, GOOD LUCK!!!! This hole will test your mental, emotional, and physical abilities. If you are having a good round up to this hole, don't kill yourself if you make a big number. It will happen to everyone at least once after a few times playing.
-
HOLE 12
(http://i498.photobucket.com/albums/rr346/Karla8983/NOKIALumia900_000151.jpg)
The visual trick on this hole is the bunkers. The bunker on the left is extremely deep, but it is quite a ways in front of the green, which is partially blocked out by the bunker. The bunker on the right is also quite a ways in front. It blocks out the landing area to the right of the green that you probably have to use on a right hole location. You will see why.
Even from a few tee boxes up, the bunkers still play tricks on you.
You can see that the bunkers are quite a ways in front of the green. You can also now see the landing area to the right, and the part of the green blocked out by the bunker on the left.
Now for the green. Looking from front to back. The massive slopes are the defense of the hole. Keep in eye out on where the hole location is; whether is in the top right, the low left, or on the section in the back that is lower than the front right but higher than the left.
A look back at the bunker on the left side of the hole from the front left edge of the green. It is very tall and deep.
Looking from left of the green to the right. The slopes in the picture look huge, but remember, pictures flatten things. The dividing slope is massive in person.
A look back at the small-in-comparison-but-actually-fairly-good-sized slope making the back section.
Looking back. I suggest you use the bank on the right (left in picture) to have your ball roll onto and stay on the high section of the green.
Overall - If the hole location is in the lower left, it is a birdie hole. If it is in the back or on the right, it is a par hole. If is is windy or you hit a bad tee shot, good luck making par.
-
HOLE 13 - (the tricky, slightly unfair, and unlucky number hole)
A drop-shot hole with no bailout except for the fairway run-up area short left. It is surrounded by bunkers left and short right, and fall-offs long and long right. This might be the only hole without a visual trick, except you may include the tee boxes blocking out the run-up area short left from the back tee.
A better view of the hole from in front of the front tee box. The unfair part of the hole is the exact hole location that is placed in the photo. You could try landing it short-right, but it is too big of a downslope to stop a ball, especially if it becomes firm.
Side Notes: The Bandon Dunes clubhouse is to the left edge of the picture and the bag-drop is slightly visible behind the first tees on the right.
The bunkers short right are no good.
The green is fairly flat with a slight left to right slope. The only big slope is the backboard behind the hole location on the right.
The downslope behind the green.
The backboard behind the hole also creates a mini back right shelf.

From next to the #1 tee. View of Bandon Dunes behind.
Overall - If it is dead calm, you are accurate from 100-140 yards, and the pin is anywhere left of the bunkers short right, birdie hole. If one of those three is not true, par is a good score.
-
WRAP-UP
- Every hole seems to have some visual distraction or has something that causes deception.
- The weather will play a huge roll in what you shoot.
- For a par 3 course, it demands physical, emotional, and mental stability, and requires imagination, a great short game and putting, and it requires feel.
- You could go low or shoot a larger number than anybody ever thought possible on par 3 course.
-#1 = Birdie hole.
-#2 = Par is good, but there may be some birdies, or scores much worse than par.
-#3 = Par is o.k., but there will be quite a few birdies. It depends on the weather and hole location.
-#4 = Scores will range from birdie to double bogey. I do no think there will be many scores outside of the ends of that range.
-#5 = Birdie hole if the pin is right or in middle and weather is great. Par is really good if the weather is bad or the hole is on the left.
-#6 = Par is a good score with a green that is so slender.
-#7 = PAR hole. If I made a par every time I played that hole, I would be extremely happy with myself.
-#8 = Birdie hole.
-#9 = Par is o.k., but there will be quite a few birdies. It depends on the weather and hole location.
-#10 = Scores will range from birdie to double bogey. I do no think there will be many scores outside of the ends of that range.
-#11 = PAR hole. If I made a par every time I played that hole, I would be extremely happy with myself.
-#12 = Par is o.k., but there will be quite a few birdies. It depends on the weather and hole location.
-#13 = Scores will range from birdie to double bogey. I do no think there will be many scores outside of the ends of that range.
So the easiest holes are #1 and #8; followed by #3, #5 (with center or right hole locations), #9, #12; followed by #4, #10, #13; followed by #2, #5 (with left hole location), #6; with #7 and #11 being the hardest.

Matthew -
Thanks for the photo tour. It seems many of the greens fall off to chipping areas and swales, leading to a variety of recovery options. True? Also, on average, how large are the greens? They seem pretty big. The course seems to really require precision, both off the tee and around the greens.

Matthew:
Thanks so much for posting the pictures. Place looks fantastic. I can never get tired of looking at pictures of Bandon.

True. I don't know the average size but there are some that are huge and don't necessarily need a precise shot and there are some that a precise shot is the only type of shot that will hit the green. And if it is windy, it makes things much much harder. Yes, the course definitely requires touch around and on the green; even on some tee shots.
-
I found that photographing the course to be great fun.
Your photo tour brings back fond memories.
Thanks.
-
That was fantastic! I was there in Feb and was drooling over just what I could see from the other courses. I didn't know I could have walked it and wish now that I had. Thanks for the tour.
-
Matthew, Awesome job!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Needless to say the course is very exposed and when windy it will be a challenge!
-
Thank you, everybody. Thank you. You don't have to say thank you anymore. I felt like I had to contribute somehow. 8) ;D
I am willing to answer any more questions that anybody has about the course.
Have fun to anybody playing it and good luck, especially if is windy!!!

:o
Just when you thought that place couldn't get any better...
Thanks for the tour Matthew!

Managing those tee boxes will be a challenge. The grass grows slowly already. Too many divots will spoil the look.

I am in full pre-Bandon distraction mode. I arrive a week from this Sunday, on May 6. Playing the Preserve on Monday, after a round at BD. Have not yet been. Have read Dream Golf Expanded and spent hours looking at photos and reading accounts of the Bandon experience. It is the one golf destination (I guess I'll have to find another now) that I really have felt is overdue on my travels. In some ways, I guess it's worked out, since I'll now be able to play all five courses on my first trip.
Thanks to all the folks who have made Bandon a shrine - I can't wait.
-
Tom - Have a great trip! Bandon is such a special place. Please post your thoughts upon your return.
Matthew - Are many of the tees elevated? How much elevation does the property generally have? How close is the course to the ocean? How many ocean views do you get? Are there multiple tee boxes to play from, offering different angles? If not, as mentioned earlier, I fear the tee boxes will then take a decent beating.

Yes. There is probably about 100 feet from #1 tee to #6 hole. It gets as close to the ocean as the 17th green at Bandon dunes. You can see the ocean on most of the holes. You only have spectacular views from the half way house and west of it. yes, tons and tons of tee boxes. On most of the holes, different angles are given; however on a few holes, the tees are just in a column. Yes the tee boxes will be incredibly beat up, but that is the major reason for all of the tees.

Did anyone else lose the Photobucket photos? I think we need to chip in and buy Matt a PRO account.

-
Yes, I was there. You have questions?
Tom
Let's start off by asking: How was it?!?!?!?!?!?
-
Matthew;
It was a golf course opening consistent with the others at the resort....friendly, low key, comfortable; Mr. Keiser and Bill Coore were there to greet each guest, with Wood Sabold there to photograph the occasion. The first group out was the same group that has started ALL 4 of the other course openings here! Others there included Dave Zinkand, who was the day to day architect/builder for C&C, "Shoe" Gaspar, Bandon GM Hank Hickox, Gary Binder from Kemper Sports, Ken Nice for a second or two, and others that came and went.
We had a shower early, but by the first group the sun was out, and in general the weather was open and sunny, though cool. Perfect Bandon golf conditions!
All good!

Did they put up a starter shack? Or do you just check in at the Bandon Trails clubhouse and then at the Bandon Trails starter shack?
Who has the course record after one day?
-
Golfers check in at the Trails golf shop, and then at the Preserve starter bldg, similar to the other courses. The new building is directly behind the first tee at the Preserve, and is landscaped in native plants, with a sign noting the Silvery Phacelia plants that have been transplanted there.
Additionally, the snack bar/restroom out in the middle of the course is landscaped with transplanted natives, part of the ecological restoration work that will wind throughout the course routing.

Golf Magazine's Eamon Lynch reported on the opening day at Bandon Preserve.

Lynch also raced in playing the 1st hole with Chris Smith, who holds the world record at speed golf. Smith played the course in 23 minutes in an even-par 39.

Eamon is one funny dude... and to think he wrote that much without some of his typically colorful Irish language.

My name is Matthew. My dad is Michael. It happens a lot (at least once a week).
But, thanks for the thank you. It only took a couple of hours to take the pictures and describe the holes. The hard part was posting all of the pictures.

They can always got back to the rubber plate...I'd play this course off astroturf!

Thank you for posting the pin sheet, William.
For hole 1- pin locations #1 and #3 are probably the hardest.
2- #3
3- #1
4- #1
5- #3
6- #2
7-#1
8- #2
9- #2
10- #1
11- #2

I think #2 would probably be the hardest in general, but they all have hard hole locations.
Note: Where the hell are they going to put the #1 location on hole 8. It is a giant slope in pin spot #1.
-
Matthew... I don't think they will let you set it up that way, LOL
-
Matthew... I don't think they will let you set it up that way, LOL
I was just pointing out which pin locations I thought would play the hardest.
And I still can't figure out where they would put the holes in the pin location of #1 on 8. Maybe they could squeeze it on the front right corner of the green.
-
Matthew,
How about front left on #8, have not played it there yet, we'll see.
I do think the pin sheet for all of the Bandon courses could be considered a weakness for the players, in that it lends itself to predictability and inflexibility etc...
I like the sheets to remind me how deep the greens are as opposed to my home home course.
Thanks!!!!!!!

Looking at that sheet, I think I would need each graphic to be at the same scale. I would also want to know how wide each green is. I wonder if they will create a yardage book which would show all the humps in the greens.

It would take a very long time to make a yardage book with every hump and bump on the greens because there are a ton of them.
