Having been chosen as the winner of Ben Sims' Aggregate Course Competition, I thought I'd spread the love a bit by offering up a token prize (TBD) for the submitter of the Official GCA Picture of the Year.
Here are the rules:
1. One submission per contestant (all additional shots should be submitted in the expected B-Side thread);
2. Photos have to have been taken in 2011;
3. Submission period will run until December 20th (picture must be posted, not linked);
4. Following the submission period, the Committee will choose five photos as the finalists (to be posted on the 22nd);
5. Voting on the finalists will be open to all with one vote per participant (votes can be submitted by PM or by post on this thread any time between the 22nd and the 31st; and
6. The winner will be announced on January 1st.
One final tweak, you're allowed to nominate a picture taken by someone else, and that picture is eligible for the contest and does not count as the photographer's submission. It does count as your submission. The prize would go to the actual photo taker, not the submitter.
Good luck, and bring on the pics.

I feel so sorry for everyone that has to compete with this...

This won't win or anything, but it's my favorite picture I took this year. This was in January on a cold day at Roddy Ranch. This is the 9th tee.

There's no whizzing in that photo. Hopefully Sven has selected a panel with a little more astute eye for the judging. I appreciate the non participating critics trying to bring the clear cut winner down to size. It can take a while to accept and appreciate great art.

And trust me, if I showed any more of the course itself (Los Verdes GC) this picture would probably not be too great.

I have been meaning to post this photo at GCA for awhile, and this contest is the perfect opportunity.
Location: Cape Kidnappers-15th(?) tee box (or thereabouts)
Model: Elaine Zuckerman (Sadly, a non-golfer..but I could have done worse in the wife dapartment I suppose..)

I have no photos of any merit that I would submit this year. But, I think it is without question, between Saltzman and Henderson in particular, and many other contributors offerings, 2011 has been the best photo essay of great golf courses year in the dozen or so years we've had GCA.com.

Gentlemen,
One cannot fail at Crail.
Note particularly The Boathouse, a sense of place indeed if one uses it to carom a shot onto the green. N'est ce pas Mac Plumart?

I am quite enamoured with the concept of land being used for multiple purposes and Minch Old is one of few of this sort of course. This is not a great photo, but it depicts what is wonderful about true common land golf. The golf works into the landscape rather than taking it over. I can imagine locals not wanting to take short cuts through the common because of delays caused by cows, much like those in more urban areas avoid routes over railroad tracks. BTW - in my never-ending battle with Ran (which I am most certainly losing), I choose to post proper sized pix - that means scrolling is in order.

Sean: On your photo of multi-purpose us of common ground, is it fair to "lift, clean & place" or play "rounders" if a cow pie lies between your ball and the hole or is it a "stymie"?

What if your computer doesn't allow you to upload pictures?
-
I'm going to try to insert a picture, but there is a 99% chance that it doesn't work... But here it goes [img]/Users/michaelessig/Pictures/iPhoto Library/Originals/2011/Camera Roll/HTC T9295_000162.jpg/img]
-
Michael go to imgur.com (http://imgur.com) and upload it there first. GCA takes the picture from the web. So once you've uploaded the picture, click on it and the address should end with .jpg
Copy that address and insert into the [img][img/] brackets as you tried before.

Michael,
Before the photo, type "[img width=800]" instead of just "[img]." that should fix the problem.

I went through all of my photos from this year and it turns out I spent most of my time playing in rather damp or overcast conditions that didn't produce a great deal of quality photography!

Jason does seem to find himself in some awkward spots. Taken at Pennard in 2010, so not an official entry, but I thought it would give you a chuckle. This was where his number two finished up, leaving an awkward turd shot.

Almost all of my golf-course pictures, this year, were taken of my daughter in competition. This one (of the approach to No. 16 at Wild Run in Eau Claire, Wisconsin) doesn't have much architectural interest, but it's pretty!

Whats the rule on that? Is there a decision on balls that lie in animal droppings?

Whats the rule on that? Is there a decision on balls that lie in animal droppings?
Every course had detailed local rules on droppings as well as the electric fences that surrounded greens. The rules varied from place to place and depended on the type of dropping.

Yes, 16. Both pics taken from the big dune behind 16. We'd played 36 the day before and had 36 scheduled the next day with OM included, so two of us sat out the afternoon 18. Towards the end of the day we went out to find our others guys and found some great light on the way.

Played a lot of places this year, special thanks to Chris Johnston and others but this is my favorite photo and why I belong to the private course I do back home. Sorry for the fuzzy, Blackberry snapshot.
December 4th, Olathe, KS, my 6 year old son walked most of his first 18 holes in 37 degrees, 12 hours before I had to catch a flight to leave him for most of the week. Granted, he didnt hit a lot of shots after 6 holes, but I loved every minute of it.
Happy Holidays Everyone.

Meh...looks like he heeled it.
Nah, just an old school outside/in swing path to hit a low heel cut, shaping it for the line of charm off the tee. Even though "the kid" is going modern with the untucked shirt and cargo pants, his knowledge of GCA is superior to any other kid in his neighborhood.

He's also violating the logo count rule - I see "Roo's," "Osh-Kosh" and "Carter's" and I'd bet that hat has a Shorty's logo.
-
I'm not in the business of criticizing photos, but I'll make an exception and inquire: exactly WHAT about that Shinny photo is anything above ordinary? The fescue is way too high for anyone to enjoy playing a course lined with that hemp, and it obstructs the view of the fairways...I could go on, but that's enough for now.

Ed and Mark...great shot of #18 (?) at Carolina...as long as there's a Bojangles, it's a neighborhood.

The harmony between the golf course and nature is extraordinary. That, notwithstanding juxtapositions between the kept and unkept landscape and between the artificially green strips of fairway and nature's more artistic color palette.
Having been there, the photograph literally makes my spirit soar. By comparison, so many of the other photographs are just of a golf course/hole.

Dear Michael,
"By comparison, so many of the other photographs are just of a golf course/hole."
Oh dear ! Christmas is a'coming...so is Scrooge!!!
I am disheartened, dismayed, discouraged and discombobulated to think that dear old Crail may not possess "harmony between the golf course and nature".

Ronald,
The "fescue" you're looking at in the foreground (actually bluestem is the brown rough you see waving) is dead left off 14 tee-out of play unless you top it 7 yards dead left.
The bluestem rough is very playable in most areas. I hit it pretty crooked and haven't had a lot of trouble with recovery.
Obstructing the view of the faiirways?
Really?
The 14th fairway is 90 degrees right of that photo(completely out of camera view)
This photo is along a road in Southampton I regularly take just for this view.
As you suggest, it's not a great idea to critique a course over photos.
Only recently I've seen photos of a course ;) that looked simply...."ordinary", yet got quite afew favorable comments.

George,
It's Palmetto GC in Aiken, SC. I believe it was originally laid out by Herbert Leeds in the 1890s(!), but the majority of it was designed by Alister MacKenzie in the early 1930s, at the same time he was working on Augusta National.
There has been some recent restoration work. I think Renaissance Golf Design was involved and now Gil Hanse is the consulting architect.
I think it's the second oldest club in the US. An awesome place.
Some cool quotes:
Ben Hogan said that holes 3, 4, and 5 were the best back-to-back par 4s that he had ever played.
Probably the highest compliment paid to Palmetto was made by Dr. Alister MacKenzie in the May 1933 edition of the American Golfer Magazine. MacKenzie said, The alterations at Palmetto have been such a success that the Chairman of Bobby Jones executive committee at the Augusta National writes me saying, We have only one serious complaint to make against you regarding the Augusta National. That layout you designed at Aiken is liked so well that the Aiken colony does not seem to be the least bit interested in coming over to the Augusta National.
And some more info here: http://palmettogolfclub.net/history.htm

As beautiful and well sited as that clubhouse is, there's nothing IN the clubhouse (except a small locker room)
I haven't been in that building in at least 10 years
I would argue the perfect clubhouse is below it ( The pro shop and adjacent snack bar)

To be honest with you, I can't recall! I played SH for my first and only time a month ago on a beautiful, (2 club) windy day. The round went by in a blur of stunning beauty and demanding golf shots. When I finally went through my pics, I could not remember this shot. Maybe some lucky sob knows the course well enough to identify.

My favorite photo I have taken at Northland. I was a warm morning and as the warm air meet Lake Superior it caused the fog to roll in like lava.

Tony,
If you click on that second link, and then maximize the photo by clicking on it...it gives you an option to select a picture size in the top right corner. When you click on that, it now shows up jpeg with a normal link. From there you just grab the link by right clicking on the photo and then you can post it up like I did! :)

Here's mine.

I figured there are enough photos of the Bandon courses so I'm going with Wolf Creek - view of #5. It's tough to keep a level horizon out there with a bit of sensory overload.

Here's mine.

Tony,
Left click on the picture to enlarge it.
Left click on the show all sizes button in the top right corner.
Right click anywhere on the picture.
Left click on the "Copy Image Location" option.
Then in GCA.com while you're creating the post enter {img width=800} then paste the image location link (CTRL v) and then enter {/img} However, you need to use the [ and ] brackets instead of the { and } brackets. I can't use them to explain it because it gets messed up tring to figure out what picture I was trying to put in this instruction. Don't leave any spaces between the ] and [ . The width=800 forces the width of the picture to the width of the gca.com screen so no scrolling is required in viewing it. You can change the 800 to whatever you want to make the picture wider or narrower. You can use the "insert image" button to save yourself the trouble of typing the {img} and {/img}. You still have to add width=800 with a space after img. This is the picture before. It looks familiar. Hope that helps. BTW Photobucket seems easier than Flickr to get the link address.

That is what I thought! Such a cool course but I'm not sure if the everyday golfer is going to understand it.

I presume that my chess set is #5...that's heady stuff, indeed. That black and white photo is so sublime, it's unfathomable. You pray to have that shot, if only once in a lifetime.
By the way, head out to a competitive event's practice round at about 6:30 and start shooting...the stuff you get is remarkable.
-
Scott...we did play all five...Kevin Lynch and I played the following schedule last July:
7/10/11 - Paramount
7/11 - (7:08) - Yellow - Foursome
7/11 - (12:52) - Red - Foursome
7/12 - (7:36) - Black - Foursome...with Tim Martin
7/13 - (9:00) - Blue - Foursome
7/13 - (3:16) - Green Foursome
7/14/11 11:00am Tallgrass
7/15/11 9:06am Links at Union Vale
Tim...thanks for vouching and thanks for the new nickname...been a while since I've been given one that wasn't "You f^&ker" or "You lazy SOB" or "you ex-stud."
Mark...mine was taken in my living room :)

Due to the plethora of amazing shots submitted for the contest, The Committee has opted to increase the number of finalists from five to eleven. In the vetting process, consideration was given to the following qualities:
1. Capturing a hot topic;
2. Photographic skill; and
3. Pure sentimentality.
Without further ado, here are the chosen eleven:
1. The best of a series of shots from the First GCA Boomerang. Taken by Kyle Henderson, this picture captures a most idyllic spot:
2. Finding a loophole in the rules (allowing The Committee to decide which of his photos was the official entry), Brian Sheehy provided the best of the Shinnie shots:
3. From the golf and the family theme, Bill Boonn's shot of the wedding attendee wishing he was on the course was the best of the bunch:
4. Winning the "hot topic" award, this shot from Brian Noser:
5. Joshua Pettit's stunning shot of the 7th at Ballyneal may be the only shot in existence of four balls and a turtle on an E-shaped green:
6. Mike Benham captured the golf ethos to perfection:
7. The 13th at Barnbougle Dunes as shot by Kevin Pallier, you have to see it to believe it:
8. The best of this year's crop of Bandon shots was this picture from Jeff Doerr of the 2nd at Pacific Dunes:
9. Sean Arble reminding us once again that sometimes the best places to play golf aren't found in a ranking:
10. Jason Topp's Kinloch shot was a photo The Committee found themselves revisiting time and again:
11. Not sure who took this one, but we're going to attribute it to Jim Colton:
With all due apologies to Whizzers, Cowturds, Head-standing wives and Skinny Greens, these were the best of the lot. Chime in with your pick from the finalists.
Whoever ends up winning, there is a prize, but my start-up lifestyle budget demands that I reiterate that it is a "token" prize.

Doerr

Forgot to say two things:
1. Votes can be put up on the thread or sent to me by PM.
2. Happy Holidays to the treehouse.
Sven
-
Sheehy's shot is my new background on my computer (seriously), but my vote goes to Mike Benham's. All these photos are wonderful and it was not an easy choice.
-
Great work Sven, but I am slightly surprised that your favorite photo of the year was not one of someone's ball stuck in a whisp of grass half way up a vertical bunker face :)
I vote Colton.
Benham a close second.

David, it would have garnered points for pure sentimentality, but lost on topicality and quality of photography.
-
Yeah,
we haven't had nearly enough asspics round here this year.
FBD.
-
My vote goes to Kyle Henderson's shot.
...Kinda pissed I didn't get any mention or anything for my pic (18 tee at Seminole)... I kid I kid! Great photos everyone!
-
#6 Mike Benham - just a terrific picture. Clear cut winner in this man's humble opinion.
Sven - great work - loved the pictures

6. Fog Man

RoMo- No problem my friend and I`m glad that the new moniker suits you. Despite shooting a million that day with you, Kevin, and Chris at BPB it was one of the highlights of 2011 and very generous of you to kick me the slot. For anyone that has not had the pleasure of playing with RoMo he has a buttery swing and disposition to match. Just a great guy to spend a day with. Get ready for Eli pal and lets see if you can light it up again. 8)
On the photo front my vote goes to Mike Benham`s shot.

#6 Stunning photo.

I'll vote Doerr. 2d Barnbougle.
-
Benham.
-
Colton.
-
I vote Colton, for all it meant this year. Foggy CPC in 2nd on my ballot.
-
I think I misspelled my vote on the PM, so I'll do it again, publicly...#6-Benham-the black/white guy. Sublime.
-
#6 without a doubt...
-
#6 -- Benham. Art -- not just a golf picture.
-
Benham's photo is one for the ages.

Number 8.

#6 Mike Benham

Mike Benham @ CPC!

#6 Mike Benham. A work of art.

Gotta go Benham.

Benham. Great photo.

no. 5.... in spite of the superfluous sepia-effect ;)

Colton.
As cool as Benham's photo is, I can't deal with the scraggly pine near the old dead tree. Who thought this pine was worth saving by putting up support wires?

Colton.

Bill,
I strongly suspect it is a cypress. It certainly is not a pine.
I further suspect that analysis of the dead tree shows it may topple soon, and they are in the process of replacement.
I further suspect that support wires a necessary given the wind evidence shown by the shape of the dead tree.
Have a good'un.
;)
-
I'll take Benham as well...awesome shot.
-
Mike Benham's.
-
Benham's picture is very thought provoking- if one were to guess his teeshots location by his gait, body expression, the ball would not be on the green, but only Mike could answer that question. In any case this is a superb picture that deserves to be framed and displayed on the wall in Mike's study/library. Jack
-
My favorite photo is Jim Colton's scorecard from the Ben Cox 108 (post 41 of the b-side thread).
That was an unbelievable achievement on so many levels, and it's fun to look at all the details on that scorecard.
But, Sven has selected a nice bunch here.
#8 gets my vote.
-
#2 @ pac dunes. Makes me feel all funny inside
Look at all those rumples :o
-
#10. You can feel the crispness.
-
What talent. Superb photos.
I vote for Mike Benham's black and white photo. Well done, Mike.
Great to see both Kinloch and Ballyneal make the final cut. What great places.
Merry Christmas.
John
-
Mike Benham's.
One of my life's wishes is to see that hole.
Sorry to my friend Jim. Your photo was pretty epic. Who took it?
-
benham
-
Mike F'en Benham
-
Benham's photo. Those of you who've seen Cypress know how wonderful of a walk that is and to see it captured like so is quite extraordinary.
-
Benham - if for nothing else than the expression of love and respect it must be for a son to take such an image of his father.
-
Benham - if for nothing else than the expression of love and respect it must be for a son to take such an image of his father.
Or more likely dad saying, " take a picture of me while I walk to the green or you'll never be invited to this course again..."
But it doesn't change the fact that it is the best of the finalists! Can I vote twice? It seems like someone would need to launch a lofty campaign to pull out of this early voting abyss into which the competitors have fallen.
-
Benham
-
Some good stuff, very hard to choose. I'll try to base my vote on good photographs, eliminating a few that are superb golf porn.
Honorable Mention: (#11) Colton marathon.
Runner Up: (#3) The Wedding Guest (Boonn)
Winner: (#6) The Fog (Benham)
-
Benham in a landside.
Mike is a wizard with the camera; he took an action shot of me last week and you would have thought I could actually play the game.
Bob
-
Joshua - rich texture is so hard to accomplish
-
Colton easily
-
Mike Benham
Followed by Brian Sheehy and Kevin Pallier in a tie.
-
Mike B at CPC gets my vote.
I hear it was pretty windy that day and his 3W didn't land in a back bunker this time ;)
-
Mike B. Fellow Giants fan.
-
Sheehy's Shinny photo still does it for me!
I like Mike Benham's photo, but the guy himself has doctored it for his avatar so surely isnt too happy with it himself? ;D ;D ;D
Cheers,
James
-
I, too, like Benham's shot, but it also contains one of the worst features of any golf course. I refer to the crutch holding up the cypress tree. If it can't stand up on its own, a tree ought to be removed. The tree in the photo may even be dead, which would be even sillier. Riviera has a bunch of these abominations, with metal poles holding up sycamore trees. They even go to the extent of camouflage painting of the poles to make them blend in with the bark. I say, "put them out of their misery."
-
Terry:
You would cut down the "lone cypress" on 17 mile drive and say that it interfered with one of your shots on Pebble or Cypress.
Hope you are having a great holiday.
-
Before the final votes are counted, thought I'd chime with the list of photos that were on the bottom of the list for nomination (all comments fully meant in jest, please don't take them personally):
1. Three things I don't get, flash mobs, v-neck t-shirts and planking:
2. Glad I saw this picture more than a half hour after lunch:
3. The only thing worse than reading about bad golf is reading about bad college football teams [insert winking emoticon]*:
4. Did I miss something here? Playing all five Bethpage courses is pretty cool, but couldn't we find a better background for this shot than Grandpa's chess board?
5. Sorry, but like the Stanley Cup this one should only be lofted by the winners:
6. Thanks for spoiling one of my favorite places in the world of golf. Don't think I'll be able to go anywhere near that back porch without subconsciously wondering who extinguished the fire.
*This is as close as you'll get to seeing me actually use one of those smiley face things.

Congrats to Mike Benham. PM will be sent to work out prize delivery details.
Thanks to all for the submissions.

Sven, Sven, Sven...golf, chess, golf, chess...don't they have chess in Finwaydenland or wherever you live?
Come on Ronald, you're better than that (and you can do better than that). I'm surprised you didn't use the Swedish Chef voice when typing that post.
-
A) I'm not better than that. I didn't even think of the Chef's voice;
B) I thought it was a pretty snazzy retort, but you can't be all things to all people;
C) I figured it was open season, since you cracked on the chess set, which is a pretty unique way to connect the chess game that is golf with the greatest 5-pack of courses on one site (Bandon doesn't count, as it only has 4 & 13/18ths) in the USA. I'll put it up against Mission Hills, too.
Above and beyond this silliness, your thread idea was an excellent one and I applaud you for it. The number of photos that were presented demonstrated yet another skill found on this DG. I can't promise that I will spend 2012 searching for the photo that will win the Second Annual Sven, but I certainly will set one aside if I think it has the right stuff.
