Have a couple of issues regarding the rankings for 2012. How does golfweek come up with these rankings. who votes for the best courses and how does golf week put courses on the list if they have been closed for more then a year (Roco Ki) I am also quite surprised that Playa Grande is ahead of Corales. and also some body needs to see the courses at casa de campo. they are getting old and need a face lift. I know they were the first courses in the caribbean, but the hype is over with.

Nice to see Bermuda is well represented.
-
Certainly haven't played 'em all, but I find it hard to believe there's a dozen courses better than Diamante.
-
My guess would be limited visits so far to Diamante would affect it's current ranking....headed down there myslef next month..that will be another "grade" in the computer ;D
-
Te quiero, Playa Grande!!
-

Jud - my feelings exactly
-
Nice to see Bermuda is well represented.
........but a stretch to call it "Caribbean."
I'm disappointed not to see Forrest Richardson's Links at Las Palomas on the list. I love the place. It's on the northern shore of the Sea of Cortez so perhaps not many raters.
-
I'm also guessing that many here would prefer to play Bay of Dreams over the majority of these courses...
-
#31 - Blue Shark (previously known as "The South Ocean Club") closed down and quit maintaining the golf course back in 2010 when I lived in New Providence.
"The Blue Shark Golf Club (formerly South Ocean) on the west end of the island is based on a layout originally designed by “Gentleman Joe Lee.” It was recently and extensively redone by Greg Norman, who rebuilt the greens and lengthened the course to more than 7,100 yards. Blue Shark was closed at press time."
The site actually had some pretty good movement and was a fun golf course to play. I enjoyed it more than Lyford Cay which is just down the road.
-
Having just returned from Cabo...I will certainly agree with Jud...how many courses ahaed of Diamante?
and also Del Sol Ocean for that matter...those two courses are superb.
The new holes at Del Sol are spectacular, you simply cannot get any closer to the Ocean than that, superb use of the terrain certainly my favourite Nicklaus so far.
Diamante was equally as impressive.
Obvioulsy a totally different type of course, Dunes swept galore giving me the old Cypress Point look with all that dune flash everywhere...simply specatculra..great job by the Love company.
New hole splanned on the Ocean side as well to replace the existing numbers 12/13, which will only add to the wow factor...very very impressed.
-
I've only played a handful of those, but the ones I have played are probably in the correct order. The one that jumps out as missing is La Cana, Punta Cana. I thought it was a great oceanfront course with some fun holes. Not top 10, but definitely top 50! Anyone else agree?
-

Hadn't heard about this. While I liked those two holes, they definitely had a different feel to them when compared to the rest.
Paging Paul Cowley for an update!
Pretty spectacular site, eh Michael??
-
Teeth of the Dog got a facelift 4-5 years ago; the Links is getting one now. I'll still take the Teeth over anything else, certainly Cap Cana.

New 12 and 13 ready absolutely no later than October 2012... eh Paul? The new holes should be incredible and as "connected" to the ocean as any outside of 17 tee now. Without seeing the exact plan I am going to take a stab and say the tee shot on the new 12th will be the most breathtaking on the course.
Paul will be busy down this way as I have it on marginal ;) authority that the ink is dry on Diamante's second offering to be authored by none other than Mr. Cowley in a solo deal. TOTALLY different terrain and movement but Paul will carve out a good one I am sure.
Ocean Course at 6 and Diamante at 13 speaks volumes to the validity of this ranking. Get 'em straight MWP!!
-
Greg,
Awesome news! That will be a pretty impressive property. Time to work on the low draw to battle the oceanside winds. ;)
-
Greg...
As I said while there I think both are underranked...the Ocean holes at both match anything California has to offer...I told you I would write that and take the risk of being chastised on this site...the quality of the architects work on both of these courses and the incorporation of the Ocean is stunning..the new 5-7 at Del Sol wonderful work, heck on number 7 you can hit your shot, take a swim and then go and putt!!!!!
I hope that Paul gets the oppoertunity to do the next Dune project without another"big name"jumping on..I was told atht the Mickelson thing offered very little...in other words, money for the name without much content...imagine that ;)....and Paul's detail on the first course deserves another chance...superb attention to detail.
One of the best examples to me is the last par 315 or 16..semi blind 150 yard shot with a wonderful small rdge of natural vegetation guarding the front of the green and a superb short bunker...but also great collection areas just long...just a great hole.
-
Diamante is in my top 5 in the world. It has a little of every thing like Cruden Bay. Roko Ki has a the best two finishing holes I have ever played and nice variety traveling through 3 different landscapes. Cap Cana very nice but I am surprised it ranks high with golf puriests.

Regarding La Cana, PB Dye has just finished a new nine across the street from the exisiting 18 at La Cana, hacienda. Great 9 nine holes. long holes and good movement. long par 4s and par 5s. La Cana will have 27 holes, tortuga nine, arrecife nine and hacienda nine. check out the website www.puntacana.com for more details.

Chris, I got a sneak peak of the new 9 earlier this year... remind me, what's the name of the new grass P.B. planted as native/ rough over there? Sounded pretty easy to maintain...

Overrated:
Querencia
Royal Westmoreland
Playa Grande
Vista Vallarta (Nicklaus)
Trump International (International)
Puerto Los Cabos
Underrated
Cabo del Sol (Ocean)
Diamante
Port Royal
Cabo del Sol (Desert)
Rose Hall Cinnamon Hill
Cabo Real (not listed)

Sometimes I don't know how these get ranked. We have a course in Costa Rica that is regualrly ranked at the top against the other two beach courses there but it rarely makes the top 50.

Greg - I'm guessing the new 12th will tee up by the 11th green and head down the hill/dune toward the water (it's currently just a big sand expanse correct?)? If that is the land that will occupy the new holes I'm REALLY excited to see how they turn out. That view from the 11th tee is second to none!

Obviously defer to paul for the particulars but yes, as I understand it the 12th would head down from somewhere in the viciinty of the 11th green toward the ocean.
-
that is the way it was explained to me as well.
From a tee adjacent to 11 green down through the dunes a par five in fact and then a shortish par four back towards the current 14th tee.
My only concern is that should that be the case they are taking away a strong par four hole in the current number 13 and putting in another short par four, which I believe the course has enough of already.
The short par fours currently there are all really good holes with options abound from the tee, but they dont need another one.
So hopefully the routing will alllow a par four with some teeth like the current #13....either that or of course do some lengthening to one of the existing short par fours....any of which I think would be possible to do.
One of the luxuries they have is that space is not an issue ;D..tees can readily be moved to fit what the architect desires.
-
Cabo is definatly a better destination than the DR. Cabo del Sol and Diamante are a better one two punch than Teeth of the Dog and Cap Cana. Also you can go downtown without a problem and sleep in the gutter.

Anthony ;D....love the gutter comment

As an aside, anyone going to Cabo with a couple extra bucks in their pocket needs to eat here:

At the recommendatiom of our Cabo site resident....H in San Jose is superb...the lobster canneloni was exquisite.
-
H and Don Emiliano are a drivable par 4 apart and both excellent. I prefer the coziness/quaintness of H myself. Probably my favorite in an area full of wonderful dining options.
I disagree with MWP about the current 13th at Diamante. I just don't think it is that good of a hole with the green being benched into the dune in what I see as an unnatural manner and not in keeping with the remiander of the course. I ss the green site to have been built up to accept the green versus cut into the back side of the dune. I am sure Paul will tell me I am not correct but that is how it appears to me. I would have attempted, or at least explored a massive double green shared with #10 or had green to sit more naturally down near the lake following the natural terrain. The unnatural and large mound along the left of the fairway also creates a "Wait a minute, where did this come from?" moment. Just seems too much effort was made to remove the lake from the play of the hole, same goes for 12 for that matter though the lake is more in play on the approach after a well stuck tee shot.
Gutters in Cabo are rather nice.

What if your tastes are more pedestrian and are staying at one of the all-inclusive resorts?
What three courses would you recommend with some consideration given to cost and access?

Lou, Where are you staying? Proximity will certainly play a role in such a suggestion. Send me a PM if you like.

Lou...
Listen to Greg over me, he knows way more about Cabo than me....except for #13 at Diamante that is ;D

I've been to Cabo as well as Casa de Campo.
I've played 9 holes (2x) at Cabo del Sol on the ocean course, and Querencia.
Querencia was typical Fazio golf--hit the fairway or be done. Cabo del Sol (the 9 holes I played) was excellent.
That said, I think Teeth of the Dog is a PHENOMENAL golf course, especially the ocean holes.
In terms of a stay and play experience, Casa de Campo is one of the finest I've experienced. Airport (relatively) on-site, a fantastic resort with tons of amenities, great golf (there are 4.5 courses now on the resort), etc.
Cabo I really didn't like the having to drive all over/around everywhere and the "time share" mentality of the places--and I was staying at a 5 diamond property--immediately adjacent to the cabo real courses.
If I had to do it again; I'd choose Casa de Campo in a heartbeat.
(That said, I really want to come back and see the newly revised cabo del sol ocean and diamante)
-
Ross, the grass you are talking about is Pajon Hatian or hatian pajon. Looks good from a distance and yes very easy to mow. just need to keep the weeds out of it and maintain it. glad you enjoyed the new nine at hacienda.
-
Cabo certainly isn't cheap but the golf, food, hotel and fishing (?) options are surprisingly good. Unless you want remote beaches and untouched scuba diving, I can't really think of anywhere south of the border I'd rather go...
-
Thanks guys for the comments...I've been away from here a bit it seems.
Yes - if built the new 12th and 13th will be oceanside of hole 11 - originally we couldn't build on that side of the dune because of environmental restrictions....we were the first on the block to build in a dune area and no one was really sure how to address this issue, as previously you could pretty much do what you want as long as you were behind the federal zone. Things have changed now and with new setbacks. The two new holes will play out and back from 11 green with very close tee/green relationships between holes (not the trek some have complained about) :). I was there in August to work out the details with Owner Ken Jowdy, who is responsible for the new routing concept. What also works with this change is that the old holes will still be used (with the addition of a par 3 betyween 13 green and 12 tee) as a three hole loop for the community and part of the teaching/practice facility...not bad to have two holes that were originally part of a Top 100 course to practice on.

Jed, If you ever get back this way please let me know and we'll make sure you have a better experience. That said Casa de Campo is a wonderful location and overall experience for those that do not mind feeling somewhat confined to resort grounds.
When were you here and why only 9 holes on separate occasions?
How did you like Las Ventanas specifically?

I think it was two years ago? We sat and spoke--you set me up at Querencia? Guess I'm not that memorable. :)
I think the 9 was under construction at the time; I played by myself.
The resort/hotel was nice; that said it was overpriced, NOT kid friendly, and they tried to hit me up for a timeshare upon walking through the doors. Not a very good experience IMHO.
I guess I'm not a cabo guy? I just didn't like the spread-out-ness and how everything was super expensive. I don't mind paying a lot; I just don't like being nickel and dime'd--which I felt like everywhere I went in cabo.

Sounds like you were down in the summer of '09 as that would have been the only time we had just 9 holes open and with the swine flu and all we were a bit preoccupied with going into survival mode at that time. My sincere apologies for lack of memory but it could be wrose... you could be truly unforgettable like our Dr. Gray.
If you are staying at Ventanas and playing golf at The Ocean Course and Querencia... yes you can rack up a nice tab. That said you can have a nice time in Cabo for far less. The nickel and dime mentality and timeshare garbage is awful... I won't be shy about charging you but I don't think we'll ever be accused of nickel and diming :)
You were hit up for timeshare at Las Ventanas?????
-
Just to bring things up to date, Casa de Campo has 5 courses, not 4.5. And I never feel confined to the resort. There's nothing more fun than watching the defending champion Toros play baseball. The restaurants in town are great - don't miss Luca's. And if you must go to a casino, there's one in Dominicus - 20 minutes away. I am prejudiced, though.
-
Anthony,
Is Roko Ki still open? I think it may not be.
-
I got married in La Romana. Stayed at Casa de Campo many times. In Cabo I was left downtown by one Greg Tallman. I watched the final four, played in a mariachi band, had an extremely high bar bill, was shown a gun at a brothel, and was told by a man that he was the devil as he showed me drugs that were in a pouch where his zipper used to be. My pick is Cabo.

Not sure. But they were having big money problems. Its a shame too because it is an unique course and has great beauty. 18 and 17 are splended. The clubhouse on the beach with an unswimable surf is special.

I may have left Dr. Gray downtown but I suspect the reason was related to his experience with the gun for which I was NOT present.
I was present for a ridiculously high bar bill that consisted of one bottle of champagne and a few "regularly priced drinks" for his host. His "hostess" seemd to enjoy the champagne.

A & G...bonding is but a pale comparison for the feelings it seems you two have found amongst the Arcos. It's beautiful really...P
