UPDATE:
Friday we have the tee at The Cupp Course at Palmetto Hall Plantation, beginning at 1:00.
Unlike the typical hurried golf weekend, sleeping in will be the norm on this one :D, so no excuses not to stay up late and drink (!)
On Saturday we'll board the 10:30 ferry out of Palmetto Bay for a 40-minute cruise to Daufuskie Island and a day at Haig Point.
Sunday's golf will be at the newly renovated Wexford Golf Club.
I'm happy to add that Golf Course Architect Brandon Johnson with The Arnold Palmer Design Co. will be joining us for the weekend and will lead a post golf discussion on the design of the project. Tee times will start at 10:00, so plenty of time to play, get cleaned up for dinner and enjoy the Super Bowl at The Smokehouse Restaurant.

ROLL CALL
We're 3 weeks away and I'll need to turn in the final list of players to the Golf Professionals at their respective clubs next week. Is everyone still in?? Kris S, I hope you'll be joining us!
Also, folks have been asking me about lodging. I highly recommend the Marriott Surfwatch Resort just before the entrance to Palmetto Dunes. Its a timeshare that also rents units in the off season on a nightly basis. 3 BR's go for $180 per night and are very very nice. JC, Mac, Dr. Gray and I stayed there before and its looking like we will this time as well. Chime in here or send me a message and we can pair up those wishing to room together.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
Ps -- Almost forgot! We're going to split into West/East rosters and make this a team event. If my double secret special west coast guest opts in, the West Team will have a Captain they'll be willing to die for. If he can't make it, then we'll open the floor for nominations. But for now, how about nominations for East Captain? We'll then circle back to the West Team after I hear from 'Mr. X' this weekend.
I hereby nominate Joel Zuckerman for East Captain.

Sounds good to me! I always love a little friendly competition. I don't have a preference for team, whatever you guys decide. Do you need handicaps to determine matches Eric?
-
Thanks for the reminder, Cory.
All,
Please fwd your HCP along with your team preference. Maybe it'll all just work out!
11.1 index ...and I gotta play for Coach K(immel) - Go Giants!!
-
Cory is a +5 and put him off first.
-
Just a reminder to those arriving early - if you can swing it, you should head over to Che Wardo's in Palmetto Bluff tomorrow night for the gumbo. I recall a fine whisky collection tucked away around the corner from the stairs, but you didn't hear that from me...
Another thing for those missing Friday's action at Palmetto Hall, please be sure to arrive at the Haig Point Embarkation (10 Haig Point Circle, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928) by 10am Saturday! The ferry leaves promptly at 10:30 and if you miss it, you miss Haig Point! Also plan for dinner at the clubhouse afterwards, so bringing along a change of clothes is probably a good call. After dinner we're scheduled to take the 7:40 ferry back to Hilton Head.
Lastly, anyone here know how to get in touch with Lawrence Largent?? I've tried and tried to contact him via PM's and emails without any luck. I'll go with the assumption he is still coming and likes to fly in under the radar. ;)
That's all I have for now. See you soon!
-
If anyone is still looking for lodging, I could accommodate an individual (even 2 if they want to share a BR) in a 2-BR, 2 bathroom condo which should be pretty nice.
Send me a PM or email asap for details if you want/need convenient lodging that will be perfectly acceptable from a quality standpoint.

After all these years of going to these things I've learned that there are just so many that are wired to last. I think of Arble and Pearce at Porthcawl drinking whisky at 2am when the bar was properly closed an hour earlier. Kavanaugh staying with me as long as he could at the bar at Dismal last October (he rolled out at midnight while I bussed tables). Yet this past year I've traveled and met Ron Csigo on four occasions and more often than not he and I end up closing down the local establishments. I love it when Cheech does a GCA outing! :)

Kudos to Brandon Johnson and Arnold Palmer Design for their work at Wexford.
The transformation of the bunkering, the greens and surrounding collection areas is outstanding. The greens are creative, challenging, fun and distinctive. A "night and day" difference at Wexford.
Mike Whitaker on the second. And thanks Mike for your work in making a great event happen.

Paging Lawrence Largent. ;D
Thanks Bruce. Great great event. Too many anecdotes and recipes shared to go into detail right now but suffice it to say everyone who made it to Hilton Head had a great time and if you played with me you got to see some really bad golf. I'm on the road for the better part of 8 hours and will post some thoughts and a few photos when I get home.
I will say this - Brandon Johnson kicked ass with his design at Wexford!!
Mac blessed it.

Thanks to Eric Smith and Mike Whitaker for making this event happen.
A very special thanks to Brandon Johnson for taking the time to join us and discuss the work at Wexford which is top notch.
-
Mark,
I echo your sentiments about Brandon Johnson's redesign at Wexford. It is a special place. Also, a big thank you to Eric Smith and Mike Whitaker for coordinating this event. Finally, it was a pleasure meeting so many new faces as well as catching up with those that I have met at past GCA events. I look forward to seeing you all again soon.
I Heart Fescue! ;D

The trip was exceptional. Ill post some photos in the next few days. And I hope to show how good Wexford is. Brandon...Great job!!!
But with all that said, it all paled in comparison to Mark "speech" on the boat back from Haig Point. Epic!!!

-
Thanks to Eric and Mike for a great weekend. Sorry to miss the Super Bowl at Ward`s but I was motivated to hit the road and catch the 2nd half in North Carolina which saved me about 250 miles of driving today. The 3 highlights for me were Wexford, Mark P`s running commentary on the ferry ride home from Haig Point and watching Jamey Bryan consume the true Breakfast of Champions which of course is a Bloody Mary and a Butterfinger. Can`t wait until TO4. ;D
-

Thaw Out 3 Sponsored by Pabst Blue Ribbon. Whoever came up with that, I hope you'll attend next year. Brilliant!
The weather, the beer, golf, food, friends, all top notch. Dinner at the Boathouse Friday night had to be as good a time as any I've had down there. You all made it mucho bueno.
When we tee'd off on Friday it was sunny and 65 degrees. Saturday, sunny and 70. And finally on Sunday it hit 80 degrees. Sunny - of course. THIS IS EARLY FEBRUARY!!! It's going to be tough living in the cold for the remainder of the winter after playing in that sort of weather. What a great trip. What a fun bunch of guys we had for the Thaw Out. As per usual at a gca outing, everyone became fast friends before it was all said and done.
We met on Friday at Palmetto Hall and played the Robert Cupp course. Here are a few shots from this fun golf course with a most unusual design.

11th 300 yds Par 4. Fairly straightforward from the tee until you find that anything played center fairway has to contend with BIG BERTHA.

Great group and Wexford is an eyepopper of a redo based on the photos. Cupp strikes me as way too unheralded so I'd like to see some course profiles of his work. I played one in Birmingham (Old Overton?) but I was disabled that day...

I had exactly the same reaction -- looks great from the pics.

Sorry for the threadjack.
On topic but not adding much, Wexford does look really interesting.

Same for me.I never would have recognized it.

Wexford was the highlight of the trip for me, even if I did only get to play 13 holes, damn wife! I was impressed with the variety of looks from the tee as well as the unique greens. The course flows very well.

You know I went on a spree in '83. Skiing in Switzerland, a little golf in Scotland, sailing and fishing off the coast of Mexico, swimming in Hawaii. And on my way to that city by the bay with it's restaurants and ambiance, San Francisco, I decided to stop over in Duluth, to catch my breath.
But you know what? It took my breath away! And I could've saved myself a lot of traveling and you know why?
Because it's all right here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PofmKxIwArk) - Duluth. Who loves you baby? I do.
