I have played some absolutely wonderful "double plateau" greens in the past year and am leaving for a weekend of golf that will include two of my favorites ...Lookout Mtn and Black Creek.
HOWEVER, this one is the Grand-daddy of them all: #1 at Yeaman's Hall.
Please don't hesitate to comment, and add your photos of your favorite double plateaus. My pics of Old Mac's double plateau don't do it justice...so hit me with it!

You beat me to #2 at Blue Mound. What a great green!! When that pin is in the back right...................... The 6th green is excellent, then 7 and the bowl, etc. The Blue Mound website is excellent with a lot of pics and there are some great holes on that great course. I think people on this site would just love the course.

My comment on #6 and #7 are just great greens to me, not double plateaus. As Phil points out #2 is a great example.

Here's a thread I did this past summer on Blue Mound, when it hosted the Western Junior. In my estimation, #10 has the best green there, but the course is full of outstanding ones, particularly on the front nine.

Phil, those are some nice pictures of the 2nd at Blue Mound. I agree there are some great template greens there and the club is very proud of their Raynor design and his use of specific templates. The bench on each hole has the hole name as well as its inspirtation...pretty cool. I would agree with the previous posters in that I liked the front nine alot better than the back at Blue Mound. Its worth a trip just to see the 2nd (Double Plateau), 6th (Short or Eden?), 7th (Punchbowl) and the Redan on the back nine (forgot the exact hole #...14?)
When comparing the Double Plateaus at Yeaman's Hall and Blue Mound I think I like YH's better only because the slopes are a bit more severe, and I like that the front left slope is cut to green height at YH where at BM its fairway.

The Redan is number 13. Great hole. Number 3 is also a special par 3. #8 is also very interesting with a very interesting green. I am sure Phil has written well about the holes at Blue Mound.

At Blue Mound, the Short is #7, although the green at hole #6 (Strategy) is terrific as well. Punchbowl is #8, with another very good green, which shows up better on the club's website than my pics. The Redan at BM is #13, a terrific version of such. Another very good green -- not one full of contours -- but with a significant tilt from back-left to front-right, is the Road hole (#5); the green at the Alps (#4) is very good as well.
Overall, I like the greens a bit moreso than the course; the terrain at BMound is quite docile, and thus much of the interest in the course, to me, came from its wonderful greens.

Just saw your excellent write-up on the course. We would call the 7th green "the bowl" but your term "thumbprint" is much better. It has that "bowl" or "thumbprint" in the green and it is interesting how the putts don't break as much as one would think. The 6th green is just fantastic, and 10!! And the 4th green and the 8th. Fantastic stuff. Awesome write-up!!! Thanks (and sorry to all for discussing BlueMound on this thread).

I agree with Bart, Yeamans Hall #1 has the best double plateau green I have seen. In my opinion, it has more character and interest than both NGLA #11 and Old Mac #1. Here are a couple of additional pictures of the Yeamans #1 green from the side showing the swale...

Great photos of the first green at Yeamans Hall. That is one of my favorite greens I have seen, no doubt. Aside from the sheer boldness and scale of the green, I can only imagine how varied the hole locations are on a day-to-day basis on that green. This hole has its detractors, who call it "mickey mouse golf." I guess I just do not understand their position.

The first green at Yeamans Hall is by Jim Urbina, not by Seth Raynor ... It had been totally destroyed years ago and we had to rebuild it from scratch. Personally, I think it is too severe. We had to rebuild the front left part last summer to make it a bit bigger as it was just too small and severe to aim for, which defeats the purpose of the hole to me. I prefer the one at Old Mac.
North Shore CC where we are now working has one of the wildest versions of this green I have seen, on the 14th hole. The green is high in front, low in the middle and left, and then high at the back right, like you are playing in from the wrong angle. That is one of the only holes on the course we have left untouched.
#6 at Chicago Golf Club is another good version, with a lot of tilt to the front left area.

What did the original Raynor green look like? I loved the green, and I did not think it was too severe. If the pin is on the front left, I'm thinking the play is to hit in the swale and then two-putt for a four.

The 9th at Fishers is outstanding, though one can be forgiven for not noticing as the site is a bit distracting.

I will try and get to the course for a sunset round on friday, and post a photo of Wanumetonomys double plateau 15th hole.
Will post other photos as well for Mr Huntley, as well as the bunker work that Ron Prichard did.

I don't really know how severe the original green was ... It was rebuilt just a few years before I became involved at Yeamans and no one had a decent picture of it from ground level. We rebuilt it based on the plan and an old aerial photo, but had to make an educated guess as to how high and steep it was. They decided to rebuild the green on short notice a few years ago when I was committed to a long trip, so the height of the green is Jim's educated guess, with input from Jim Yonce who remembered the old green ... but the left part of it had been abandoned as green long before Jim Yonce saw it.

I missed your photos of North shore in between all the Yeamans photos. All the trees behind that green have been removed recently ... The green looks awesome with the flag on the back shelf floating in space.

Here are a couple of pics of a green that I think qualifies.
This is the green for a new approx 320m par 4 at the Harewood Golf club in Christchurch New Zealand. This hole is part of a complete rebuild of 18 greens with complete rerouting on 5 holes.
The design work was carried out by Scott Macpherson (who many of you know on here) and Greg Turner.

The middle section does have room for one or two pins as long as the green speed is kept to a sensible pace.

My favorite Double Plateau has always been Fishers Island #9. Good call John.
