I know it has been discussed on this site before, but in the quick search I made I couldn't find the thread. I was updating my website of the best 36 hole days we've had golf trippin' and I thought it would be interesting to see what was out there.
My favorite 36 day was when I played NGLA in the morning and Sebonack in the afternoon. That day is followed up closely by a day at Bandon as well as a Yale/Fishers Island day. Curious to hear about some other stellar 36 hole days.
-
On a purely objective analysis of course quality, Machrihanish and Dunaverty isn't the best 36 hole day I've had...but I can't think of a more enjoyable one.
-
Any combination of the courses at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort - PD and BT was my favorite 36 in June
-
My best 36 hole day is an afternoon 18 on anyone one of a multitude of courses followed by a few pints, a fine meal and some sleep. Get up, have a fine breakfast and play 18 more.
Ciao
-
Cypress Point and Pasatiempo. Magical.
Cheers,
Jordan
-
All of my best 36 (and more) hole days have been played on one course. I've done several of the better two course combos but none of them have been as satisfying as spending a whole day at one venue, with close friends and/or kindred souls.
-
A few years ago with some superintendents from Melbourne - Royal St. Georges in the morning, Swinley Forest in the afternoon. It was a long day with dinner courtesy of the petrol station down the road from swinley because of course, it was past 7pm and everything shuts.
-
Kingsbarns/TOC, PD/OM, Waterville, RCD, 36 by myself at my club in under 4 hours in a cart (sorry Melvyn)...
-
Jud
36 in 4 hours and on a cart - can't have savoured the experience then, expect you just wanted to get it over as soon as possible. See what using a cart can do – its can kill not just one round of golf but in your case two – Hell, what a waste of two rounds and think of the money as well - we do being Scottish. ;)
All the best Speedy 8) :-\
Melvyn
-
Four ball in the morning, a quick shower and change into jacket and tie for a wonderful lunch, followed by a change back into golf clothes and an afternoon foursomes match -- that's a day at Muirfield or Royal St George. Loved 'em both, that's the best.
Two rounds at NGLA with lunch in the birdcage was right behind.
I've never played 36 in a day at two different courses, sounds like a long day!
-
This year alone I've had some great ones:
Palmetto/Augusta CC
Spanish Oaks/Colonial
Creek/Engineers/Deepdale
Eastward Ho!/Old Sandwich, favorite this year, two fantastic courses with tremendous architecture
Olympia Fields(North)/Sycamore Hills
Lost Dunes/Dunes club
Sunnehanna/Rolling Rock
-

I didn't play them both in one day, but I have to say that, although Machrihanish is by far the better course, I was thrilled that I bothered to play Dunaverty. It funny how some courses, often overlooked by many, can leave the strongest impression.
My favourite 36 holes day was Lundin & Leven. Not only were the courses fun, but I played with this old member on Lundin who must have been in his 70's. He was 2 under as we walked off the 9th, he shook my hand & said, "That's all I play laddie", & he walked off into the distance.
-
I have had a few.
Pebble Beach/Olympic
Fishers Island/Maidstone
Crystal Downs/Arcadia Bluffs/Kingsley Club
NGLA/Sebonack
Rock Creek Cattle Co/Rock Creek Cattle Co
Merion/Pine Valley
Somerset Hills/Bayonne GC
There are more...
-
Can't match the sizzle of the world travelers above, but I love playing Caledonia and True Blue back to back each July.
-
...
Seminole/Jupiter Hills
Flint Hills/Prairie Dunes
Black Sheep/Lost Dunes
Medinah/Butler National
-
On a purely objective analysis of course quality, Machrihanish and Dunaverty isn't the best 36 hole day I've had...but I can't think of a more enjoyable one.
Chris, If you can't think of a more enjoyable day, why wouldn't that be your best day?
I just did the exact same combo (Mach/Dunaverty) and that is a fantastic day. For the life of me I don't see why more people don't play Dunaverty.
I try to set up trips around a "big course/small course" daily routine.
Bill McBride,
Just once we've gotta get you playing 36 in one day at two different courses ;D
-
Almost too many fine 36-hole days to mention. A couple that come to mind immediately...
The very best has to be my dream day in 2005 when a group of us played Cypress Point Club early in the morning if perfect weather then after lunch played the Shore at MPCC in a howling wind. Certainly the two finest courses I've ever played in a single day and the company was superb.
Then there was the Saturday in February when a threesome of us went around Pine Needles twice. It was 60 degrees, windless, cloudless, the course was in perfect firm-and-fast condition and we saw exactly one other player on the course during the entire 36-hole day. Kind of surreal. Apparently there was a NASCAR race down the road in Rockingham so the resort was nearly empty of golfers since every room within 40 miles was booked with race fans.
I could go on and on. I love a full day of golf. Even better is 36 holes and still having some daylight left in high summer.
-
jim,
black sheep / lost dunes? 2 of my favorites. I assume this was accomplished during the summer solstice and that all speed limits were complied with in transit... 8)
-
I played 36 at Old Head a few years ago and it was tremendous. Two groups of 4 played 18 around noon, had lunch and beverages, and then we all played 18 more starting at 5pm (course was empty and we carried, no caddies this time). The weather was almost magical -- warm, sunny, very slight breeze. the course was nearly empty. With a few holes to go, they sent out a cart asking if we would be staying for drinks and dinner (yes!). I've played 36 holes a day on higher "ranked" courses, but never had a better 36 hole day than that one.
-
I played 36 in a day in a friendly match on two dfferent courses once.
Front 9 holes at Wrotham Heath
drive an hour to Deal and play 18
drive back and play the back 9 holes at Wrotham
A great day!
-
Shinnecock in the AM and Aronimink in the PM
-
I played:
Pacific Dunes with Jeff Brauer - who is such a great guy
Old Macdonald with Dan Schlegel - a close friend and we talked non-stop about the architecture on this wonderful course
a match at Bandon Trails (with 3 clubs) with Steven Goodwin and Dan - and we talked about playing golf "in the edges of time"
For me the great moments involve people
-
Two that come to mind for me are:
Wolf Run/Crooked Stick
True Blue/Caledonia
-
Matt - Did you drive or helicopter between courses?!? That's a long day and maybe gets the award for the longest distance between two courses in a day!
-
about 45 at Macrahanish. Can't remember how many holes we played the third time out.
36 at BD and BT refereeing two matches at the US Mid Am. One in an absolute downpour.
-
CPC/Pebble Beach
Sunningdale Old and New with a fabulous lunch between rounds
Muirfield (4 ball am, 2 ball pm) with another fabulous lunch between rounds
-
Pebble Beach/Olympic
Fishers Island/Maidstone
Wow, Jim, how did you pull of the distance/logistics between these?
I did Engineers and Creek last year. What a day!
-
Pajaro Valley, a.m.
Pacific Grove back nine 2x, late afternoon.
-
In terms of logistics, one of the most memorable was this past Father's Day- Arose in Savannah, made it to the first tee at Muirfield Village by noon or so thanks to a timely Delta flight, then on the tee at Scioto by 6:15 PM. The first round was slow (Parent--Child event) but the evening round was a snap--most everyone had vacated the premises, and the 3-4 groups I caught up to quickly waved me through. I was at dinner afterwards with the light just fading, thinking that timing is everything, and I was fortunate that this ambitious golf day coincided with the longest day of the year!
-

Well okay, does Bandon Trails and the Sheep Ranch count? ;)

What is a speed limit? That was a fun day though.
-
Pebble Beach/Olympic
Fishers Island/Maidstone
Wow, Jim, how did you pull of the distance/logistics between these?
I did Engineers and Creek last year. What a day!
First off at Pebble one morning and then drove to Olympic. Traffic was not bad fortunately. We had a private boat at Fishers and zipped over to some place near Maidstone. Highly recommended way to travel there.
-
Easy -- same as Brent Hutto's: CPC in the morning, and a spirited game of wolf with Bob Huntley at MPCC Shore in the afternoon. Tom Huckaby was in attendance during both rounds, and Ash Towe and Ed Getka played the morning 18.
The morning round at Cypress included the shot of my life. After making my first birdie of the day at the jewel-like 15th, I stood on the magnificent 16th tee for the first time and decided, despite my resolution all summer to hit a three-wood there, to hit driver, because it would have broken my heart to come up short at that great, great hole. Nevertheless, I didn't feel right about the driver in my hand. It wasn't the right club, and I knew it. I turned around, and my caddie was holding the three-wood in his outstretched hand. I exchanged clubs, walked back to the tee and hit the best three-wood I've ever hit, drawing in from the right over the ocean and landing close enough to the hole to give me a brief prayer at immortality (has anyone ever gone 2-1 at Cypress #15-16?) It ended up 20 feet behind the hole and I two-putted. I don't think my feet touched the ground the rest of the day.
Some days are simply touched with magic from beginning to end. After the round at MPCC, we were greatly entertained by Mr. Huntley's stories of the old days in Rhodesia, and upon leaving the club, I was stopped for exceeding the 30 mph speed limit by a CHP patrolman. He let me go without a ticket.
-
Mine was Sand Hills/Sand Hills and Ballyneal/Ballyneal. Very close behind that any combination of the Bandon courses.
Rick, the morning 18 at Cypress was the most enjoyable round I have ever had on one of my trips.
-
I can't match the star power of some of these two-a-day rounds, but at times the camaraderie outweighs the courses. Some of my best 36 hole rounds have been spent with my longest-tenured golf buddy. We started playing the game in the late 1970s when he was a waiter and I was a bartender here in Virginia Beach. He lives in New Orleans now, and when he comes back to visit family, the two of us make a point of playing some 36-hole rounds on the courses we played back in the day.
-
Arcadia Bluffs at Sunrise, Crystal Downs with Doak in the afternoon.
-
In Australia it has been pretty hard to go past Royal Melbourne and Kingston Heath - but by April Barnbougle and Lost Farm will be the best days golf here.
Woking and Worplesdon is pretty good.
-
Woking followed by lunch and golf at Swinley Forest was a great day too.
-
Matt - Did you drive or helicopter between courses?!? That's a long day and maybe gets the award for the longest distance between two courses in a day!
We took a jet to Philly international and drove from there. I was worried about time since we didnt tee off until 10am at shinny.
Would of been nice to get a helicopter from Philly to the mink tho
-
San Francisco (morning)/Olympic Club (Lake) (afternoon) last month was pretty special. Cal Club the following morning was a great way to round out two days in SF.
Baltusrol Upper/Lower is also pretty great.
I'll add my voice to any configuration of 36 at Bandon. I think I've done every possible one and personally favor PD/BT, but there is something really special about 15-18 on BD at sunset.
-
Kilspindie and North Berwick West Links. 74-78 in 2003 and I can't recall breaking 80 since.
Mike
-
Limiting my response to two different courses on the same day:
TOC followed by the New in the afternoon.
Honorable mentions:
Point 'O Woods - Dunes Club
Olympia Fields North - South
Blackwolf Run River - Meadow Valleys
World Woods Pine Barrens - Rolling Oaks
-
Turnberry on a postcard perfect day, with my dad and caddies. After a long lunch and several brews we booked an emergency 18, trolleyed our own clubs and had the course to ourselves while the sun set.
-
First answer: two different courses in the same day. Monterey Peninsula Shore in the morning and Pasatiempo in the afternoon. Delightful!
Same course: anytime I can play 36 holes at Northland Country Club in Duluth, MN is special.
-
For me, it was Shinnecock and Friar's Head on a perfect early October day three years ago.
Some other notables include: Pine Needles and Mid Pines (just last week); Winged Foot East and West; Merion and Aronimink.
-
I got to play Cypress Point in the morning and Olympic (Lake) in the afternoon - never enjoyed lunch at 7-11 so much in my life.
2 Rounds at Muirfield in Scotland with the lunch in between, never had to change clothes so many times in my life :-)
-
Duh. Just remembered a day at Crail in 2004, Sunday first day of a week trip.
Craighead in the morning, Balcomie in the afternoon, nice lunch in between.
Priceless.
-
Best 36 continued- winged foot west + east, morning round @ pga championship at oakland hills, afternoon at kingsley (ok I was only walking in the morning and yes we flew my buddies plane but it was phenomal and since were in full name drop mode...)
-
First answer: two different courses in the same day. Monterey Peninsula Shore in the morning and Pasatiempo in the afternoon. Delightful!
I did that one, Bruce...awesome!
-
Ash,
I'm with you, except I played 50+ holes in one day at Ballyneal. In fact, over a 3-day period, I played 140 holes. There isn't a better place for that sort of golf gluttony, barring two weeks in Scotland. ;)
-
NGLA and Garden City
Wade Hampton and Mountaintop
Winged Foot West and East
Merion East and West
-
Kyle,
My Sand Hills day was actually 45 holes.
I think at some stage I can see doing Barnbougle/Lost Farms. There are a few I would like to try but that could end up being a thread hijack.
-
Gullane 1 and 2 on a sunny 65f day with friends and very clear views to the firth bridge and castle. And back down Gullane Hill to Murfield. Is there a prettier place in the world than the 7th tee of course 1?
-
Both We Ko Pa Courses in same day was very nice.
-
I have been to fortunate to play 36 holes four times in the past year. They have all been two loops and all have been great:
1. Beechtree, October 2008 (I sure wish I could go back in time)
2. Golden Horseshoe Gold Course, January 2009
3. Chambers Bay, March
4. King Carter GC, July
-
Carnoustie/The Old Course
Barnbougle Dunes/Barnbougle Dunes
-
Muirfield in 2007, Royal St George's this year, both with formal lunch (plus wine & kummel) in between.
Fourball in the morning, a relaxing foursomes in the afternoon.
-
I've only had the pleasure of one 36 hole day in my life and it happened just a few months ago at Ballyneal. What an amazing day! I am very excited for more multiple round days in my future as well.
-
Crystal Downs/Kingsley ranks pretty high, so does 1st off Pebble and then MPCC Shore with Sir Bob.......Castle Stuart, Royal Dornoch, Fishers Island, 45 at Prairie Dunes......I have been very lucky to have quite a few of these......
-
Brancepeth Castle/Seaton Carew
Hunstanton/Royal West Norfolk
RAC Club (two courses)
Moor Park (two courses)
St Andrews Eden (before the changes)/Old Course
Whittington Heath/Beau Desert (Whttington Barracks in those days)
Pyle and Kenfig/Southerndown
Sandiway/Delamere Forest
Reddish Vale/Cavendish
Fulford/York
Llanymynech/Welshpool
Heswall/Caldy
Royal Dornoch/Nairn
Seacroft/Woodhall Spa
West Hill/Woking
Hindhead/Liphook
Rye/Littlestone
Those were all walking and carrying - I should be incapacitated if I tried that now!
The maddest of all was Disley and Mellor on the same day - 36 seriously moutainous holes, all in the cause of serious research.
-
;D :D ;)
neat question ...for me it would have to be the first time I played Winged Foot East and West in the same day....the old caddy master at PVGC Tommy Elder would take a group of twelve to sixteen good players (and me ) with him for a fantastic day of golf....in that I was fairly young and impressionable the experience was sooooo good !
Since then have taken some great trips notably Ireland ...but as I was just learning the game the early Winged Foot experience is still tops
also both courses are great fun ! albeit a little tough
-
It seems to me that anyone answering this question woth two different clubs doesn't get it.
For me Muirfield (on a Wednesday), RSG (as Andrew said), The Berkshire and Swinley Forest all come into it, but Muirfield pips it.
-
1 - Shinny & National, in that order, with lunch at National in between and the day ending with drinks on the porch or in the birdcage looking out over the sunset on Peconic Bay.
2 - First tee time at Pebble, followed by Cypress.
Have had the good fortune of doing #1 more than once, #2 only once. For me #1 wins out. But talk about splitting hairs !!!!
-
Maybe the best muni combo- Black in the am followed by a Red afternoon. Prerequisite being a sketchy 4 hrs of sleep in the back of my Pathfinder..
-
Cypress followed by Pebble earlier this year is hard to top. Kingsbarns and Crail on a sunny day was excellent. 36 at North Berwick was remarkable. Shinnecock followed by Sebonack was terrific. Pacific Dunes twice while shooting 74-68 is my best playing day...
-
This topic has me eagerly awaiting a 36 hole adventure I am taking with great golf buddies of mine next Tuesday, as an Aussie living a few hrs from Sydney it doesn't get much better than this:
-3am start, drive 2.5hrs for 8am tee time at NSW followed by a quick dash to The Lakes for a first hand look at Mike's recent work!. then 2.5hrs home. Will take some photos and post next week.
-
Based on being newlywed and the normal "die down" of golf season that happens this time of year, I'm becoming very nostalgic with my posts lately. Witness.
Had a ton of great 36 hole days in my first year doing this GCA'er thing. I don't know how many we played in our five hours at Sheep Ranch, but it was cathartic. The 28 hole day of Pac/Old Mac was damn cool. Pac/Trails was a good day. 36 at Saguaro was very cool because the how well it's routed. I didn't get to play all of them because of the aforementioned back injury, but Kingsley/Crystal was a great day as well.
None of them hold a candle to the 45 hole day with an amazing group of dudes up at Holyoke. Rupert put on a great show up at the bar that night. "Mad Dog" Andy (a scholarship caddie at CU Boulder) was an awesome dude and good caddie. I met guys like Jim Colton, Brad Fleischer, Evan Fleisher, Matt Schulte, Barefoot Mike Wagner, Rich Choi, Adam Clayman, Joe Perches, and Dr. Herreid. It was epic. And I don't think I'll ever have a golf day like that one again. It's what makes this website--as another cool GCA guy Michael Robin said--the best internet dating site there is.
-
For me it was late May 97
last day of my honeymoon woke up at 5 or so drove over to Lahinch on a bluebird day, walked the old course by myself, got back in, paid my greens fees (the starter had told me the day before just to come over and if no one was around to just head out and pay when I finished), went back to the hotel, woke up the wife, took care of business, had a great irish breakfast
drove to Shannon caught a flight at 1pm flew into JFK drove out to Westhampton and tee'd it up at Westhampton CC about 4:30, finished just before dark.
-
3 come to mind:
Bethpage Red (a.m) and Yellow (p.m.) w/Kyle H. June of 2005 followed by Umberto's Pizza (NHP, NY).
The Creek (a.m. w/Wayne F.) and Bethpage Red (p.m, playing into darkness) Friday of Memorial Day weekend, 2005. A great start to the weekend, and better than sitting in traffic on the SSP and Belt.
Mid Pines & Pine Needles, 2005 Dixie Cup. 'Nuff said.
-
For me, it was Shinnecock and Friar's Head on a perfect early October day three years ago.
Dean
I did that combo just recently as well - must be a good month for that sort of thing 8)
It was as memorable as the day ticket at Sunningdale (Old) + (New) for me.
-
Kevin,
Well done on the Long Island combination, I am so jealous. :)
-
Pretty much past that stage.
Bandon Dunes x2 prior to opening; only player that day.
Sunningdale Old, New
Saunton-East, West
Hunstanton, Brancaster
Pennard, Tenby
Cypress Point, Monterey Peninsula (Shore)
Royal Melbourne (West), Kingston Heath
Victoria, Metropolitan
-
I've had a few.
Nchanga/Bancroft
Royal Salisbury/Chapman
Durban C.C./Royal Durban
Royal Johannesburg G.C. East/West
Royal Melbourne/Kingston Heath
Riviera C.C. and Los Angeles C.C.
Pebble Beach/ Cypress Point G.C. with Art Bell, Jack Westland and Harvie Ward.
MPCC Shore and Dunes with a host of GCA friends from all over the place and each day was a gem.
Augusta National , with a now deceased in-law. Something a trifle different from anything else.
Pine ValleyG.C. I played it for the first time in 1970 and thought it then and still do, as the best course on the planet.
My favorite of all, several days of playing the Old Course in the R&A Jubilee Vase getting into the last sixteen. My cup flowed over.
Bob
-
Prestwick/Western Gales
New Zealand/St George's Hill
Sunningdale New/Old
Walton HeathNew/Old
Capitol Hill Legislator /Judge w/ my dad, brother and b.i.l.
-
Winged Foot West and East
-
On a purely objective analysis of course quality, Machrihanish and Dunaverty isn't the best 36 hole day I've had...but I can't think of a more enjoyable one.
Bill McBride,
Just once we've gotta get you playing 36 in one day at two different courses ;D
Just reminded, Mid Pines and Pine Needles at the 2005 Dixie Cup!
That is so easy, they across the street from one another! That is a very easy walking 36 holes on two courses.
-
Would like to do Royal County Down/Portmarnock and Barnbugles before I hang it up.
-
Any day I can play 36 holes of golf is a great day.
-
Just remembered and Pat Mucci will have me keel-hauled for forgetting it, played NGLA and Shinnecock back in 1976.
Bob
-
All of my best 36 (and more) hole days have been played on one course. I've done several of the better two course combos but none of them have been as satisfying as spending a whole day at one venue, with close friends and/or kindred souls.
+1
I've enjoyed some mighty fine combination days, but the best is playing a favorite course 2 or 3 times in a day.
Pacific Dunes
Ballyneal
Sand Hills
Kingsley
I had a mighty fine 36 hole day at my former home courses last summer as well. Shot 79 on each course in the same day - the only two times I broke 80 all year.
-
Just thought of something interesting... to me, at least.
I have only made 4 eagles in my entire golfing life. All 4 have come on a day when I played the hole in question more than once on that same day. 3 of them were on 36 hole days and one of them was on a 9 hole course on a day I played 18.
-
Tie:
Naira / Cruden Bay
Pacific Dunes / Bandon Trails
-
National in the am and Shinne in the pm on a bright sunny day.
Amazing!
-
Bumping this topic to boast about my latest experience. Shinnecock in the morning, lunch with two great long time members, followed by an afternoon at The National Golf Links of America. I don't know how I could top it. Sheer perfection.
The macho Shinny with all its US Open challenge and its constant change of direction routing that makes sure you'll get some uncomfortable wind directions and the ever-present handsome clubhouse on top of the hill, always watching over the proceedings. The unparalleled interior view from the 13th tee. The iconic 7th, 9th, 16th and 18th. The fescue. The unforgiving fairway bunkers that seemingly draw your attention with hopes of skirting them and yielding a simpler approach. I'm not sure but Shinnecock may be the perfect championship venue..
Then we have The National. What can I say? We all know that it's the enchanted journey. Looking around as you stand on the first tee, you can't help but smile and get that giddy feeling of anticipation. Straight ahead, the gorgeous stately clubhouse, to your left, the 18th green, the giant flagpole and the views to Peconic Bay, to your right, the windmill. Ahhhhh, the windmill. You get glimpses of it when playing Shinnecock in the morning, but now it's right in front of you. The Alps, #3, head scratching brilliance. What a green complex!! Redan, Short, Bottle. But after you hole out on the 13th, Eden, you turn around and start making your way back up to The Windmill. Enchanted journey? Yes sir!! Cape, Bottle, mind blowing Punchbowl. Then you're there. Standing on the tee at 17, the windmill now at your back, but the clubhouse and the view of the Peconic right in front. Does it get any better than this you may ask? Well if it does, I want to go there too!
36 at Shinny and NGLA, yeah that's a day I'll remember for a long, long time.
-
I can't compare to that, but I've had a few good ones.
Going to Kohler a few weeks ago and playing the Straits and River in one day was pretty good. Certainly qualifies as the Toughest 36 Hole day that I've played.
Tobacco Road and Pine Needles qualifies as the Best Played 36 Hole Day that I've logged. I was an 11 handicapper at the time and shot 83-77, with the 77 at Pine Needles matching my personal best 18 hole score. I was pretty satisfied that evening.
The Best 36 Holes of Golf in one day belongs to The Prairie Club. Dunes in the morning, Pines in the afternoon. The 5 hour drive back to my client in Lincoln that evening flew by in one big daydream replaying the shots from earlier that morning.
-
Muirfield, in the days when you could still play your own ball for all 36-holes, plus the lunch in between rounds sitting at those long, long tables.
All the best.
-
All of my best 36 hole days were played over one course. Mad dashes from the 18th at course A to the 1st at course B never hit the spot, at least for me.
-
Love this thread!!
I've had a few crackers over the last few years - some of the best ones that spring to mind:
Swinley Forest off first thing for a 3 hour round, a lengthy lunch and another quick round in the avo on a deserted golf course - perfection! I've done this with a number of GCA'ers now - Ben Jarvis, Ron Csigo, Dave Herrick, Greg Taylor, David Elvins etc.
Brian - you beat me to it!
Swinley was my first experience of golf in the UK. I couldn't have asked for a better day to kick off what was a memorable two weeks. It was a combination of the golf course, the lunch, the weather and of course the company, which made the day what it was.
My two other choices would be Pebble/Spyglass with my father and Royal Melbourne West/Kingston Heath with GCAer Anthony Fowler.
-

This.
Winners for me Swinley Forest, Muirfield, RCP. All three combine great courses with great clubs. A recent very enjoyable visit to a course in the US with a couple of GCAers confirmed this for me. breakfast, lunch and 36 holes at the same club with a very good course and a real club atmosphere is always a winner.
-
??? ;D :D
Portstewart morning Portrush afternoon
-
In the past year - 36 foursomes with the Dinner match society at Sakonnet.
Or Jack's Point in the morning followed by lunch, a flight back to Wellington and after seeing friends a solo round at Paraparaumu Beach teeing off at 6pm.
-
Like many have already said:
any two rounds at Bandon Dunes
Ballyneal
Muirfield, with a great lunch in between rounds
Dornoch
Castle Stuart
I'll also add:
Double Eagle / The Golf Club
The New Course, followed by lunch in the R & A Clubhouse, then The Old Course, followed by drinks in the R & A Clubhouse
East Lake / Atlanta Athletic Club
Shoreacres / Skokie
-
Four times around The Goat is hard to top, unless you go 5.
-
So far it would be NGLA and Sebonac although this Friday should be solid: its Milwaukee CC and Blue Mound . Then a few Old Styles to celebrate afterwards. Last Summer it would be a morning at Somerset Hills and a memorable afternoon with the great one at Mountain Ridge.
-
36 at The Golf Club is my favorite way to spend a day playing golf.
No hustle bustle, relaxing and ideal environment, interesting and challenging course, great food between rounds, all the while surrounded by good friends.

too many to rank, 36 in a day is always great 8)
-
Tomorrow I'm doing Donald Ross at French Lick (Hill Course) in the morning then Pete Dye course in the afternoon, but my favorite was probably two summers ago when I did recently restored Pinehurst No. 2 followed by Mid Pines.
-
I've had some great days of going around twice at the same course, but for different courses I'll nominate
Friar's Head / Shinnecock (see Sheehy's post)
Royal Melbourne / Kingston Heath
The Golf Club / Scioto
-
I can't compete with some of these amazing combo platters, like Shinny and NGLA or Friar's Head and Shinny. I'd need to be resuscitated if I ever pulled those off, but I've done okay here in Chicago. I particularly like playing Butler and Beverly ("the Killer B's) on the same day. I've also enjoyed North Shore and Shoreacres on the same day. Then we turn to 36 at the same facility. There's the Olympia Civil War, North vs. South, which I've been lucky enough to stage a couple times at LACC as well. I used to belong to Olympia, Flossmoor and Beverly at the same time, with all three clubs being on the same street, if more than 12 miles apart and I've played every possible combination on the same day, including the "King of Western Avenue" tour where we played 36 and stayed overnight at Olympia and then did the Beverly/Flossmoor combo the next day.
Pinehurst 1 and 2 on the same day is awfully nice, even if #1 is Lilliputian in scale by comparison to #2. One cannot diminish the magnificence of Pebble Beach and Spyglass on the same day. And, not for nothing, 36 at Bandon Dunes, in any combination, is something to stir the golfing senses, that's for sure. My particular favorite would be the morning round at Pacific Dunes and the afternoon on the Trails, with a little wind break provided by the majestic pine and cypress trees.
-
Many great ones to mention, but here are a couple fun ones:
Greatest disparity: CPC in the AM, Pac Grove in the PM.....Sebonack in the AM, South Fork CC in the PM (Hanse back 9!)
Best Scoring: Greenock CC (9x2) in the AM 67, Waconah in the PM 71...138. Shot 140 a few weeks ago at Streamsong, and had a 139 at TOC (72) and Lundin Links (67) a few years ago. Lowest 36 at Tedesco is probably 142ish.
Most holes: Rutland CC (45 holes), Bandon Dunes/Pac Dunes/one club (42ish holes)
Time Record...Mid Pines/Pine Needles in about 5h15m on a Tuesday morning. Also did Crooked Stick and Broadmoor in Indiana from 12:30PM to 8PM once.

Prairie Dunes comes to mind- including "The Match"- an epic battle that will be talked about for years - who knows maybe a book will be written someday? ;)
-
As Brian's already mentioned, that day at NGLA rivals them all.
Another that occupies my mind is Day 1 of BUDA VIII at Royal Porthcawl. Just an incredible day all around. Best of the best.

Sheesh, I forgot one of the titanic combo platters of all-time, Sand Hills and Dismal River. Epic. Soon, however, it will be a 45-hole experience when I get the crew out there in August to add the Doak to the itinerary.
-
Terry...you beat me to the punch!
Can't wait for the Dismal double dip.
-
Morning round at Cypress Point, afternoon Wolf game at MPCC Shore.
I would not expect to live long enough to experience very many days even close to that enjoyable.
-
So far this year I've done 36 at Streamsong (yesterday, actually), which was terrific. A couple of weeks ago was a very solid 36 at Whistling Straits (Straits) and Blackwolf Run (River). But the best may be early May of last year with 18 at Kingsley followed by 18 at Crystal Downs with a certain esteemed architect and GCA contributor. Really a great day.
-
Notable 36 hole adventures
CPC & PB
Winged Foot (East & West)
Winged Foot (West ) & Quaker)
Olde Sandwich & Kittansett
Myopia Hunt & Essex County
Olympic Lake & SFGC
Best ever in my memory , perhaps the best day I ever spent was a perfect fall day--colors , sun , breeze and blue sky was 36 at Salem AND I PLAYED WELL, which is rare!!
-
All of my best 36 (and more) hole days have been played on one course. I've done several of the better two course combos but none of them have been as satisfying as spending a whole day at one venue, with close friends and/or kindred souls.
I'm with Richard.

I already hit the first two legs at Streamsong and Straits/River this year. Looking forward to the third pairing later this year; the "certain esteemed architect and GCA contributor" is invited to join, of course.

MERION - 36 holes, friendly Springdale vs. Merion match. Interesting lunch between the nines.
Played and beat my good friend and host in the afternoon with a 77 the best score I have ever had there. It was super to take seven friends there. This was about ten years ago. Perfect early fall day in late September.
Best 36 holes walking site: CHECHESSEE CREEK CLUB - Okatie SC. I had three 36 hole days there last year, and two already this year.

My all-time favorite, hands down: Royal Melbourne Composite and Kingston Heath
Runners Up:
Shinnecock & National
Merion & PVGC
Brora & Royal Dornoch
Friars Head & Garden City
Quaker Ridge & Winged Foot West
Muirfield & North Berwick
Oakmont & Laurel Valley
LACC North & Riviera
Royal Aberdeen & Trump Scotland (last summer)
Myopia Hunt & The Country Club
SFGC & Pasatiempo
Lahinch & Ballybunion Old
Nairn & Castle Stuart (last summer)
Royal St. Georges & Royal Cinque Ports
In the late-summer through the end of fall 2001,with nary a human responsibility and the benefit of a functioning left knee, my goal was to try today play 36 every day at wonderful venues. It was easily the most fun year I've ever had with the game.
Next up this fall:
Friars Head & Fishers Island...going away day...followed immediately by a full knee reconstruction!

Sorry gentlemen,
I'm definitely with the 36 on one course guys. The people that brag about doing 36 on different courses are those same people that brag about seeing all of Europe in a week or say something like, we left The Netherlands and did Belgium, Luxembourg, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, France, Italy and drove back in 3 days. Great, hope you enjoyed it.
Sometimes you have to slow down and smell the flowers or even notice they are there.

Godspeed!

whistling straits/blackwolf run. a physically and mentally exhausting day of golf...
-
CPC & PB
Winged Foot (East & West)
Winged Foot (West ) & Quaker)
Olympic Lake & SFGC
I've done each of these combos too-we must know the same members.
The WF-W / QR combo is brutal.
-
St. Andrews/Muirfield
That must be a 90 minute drive. Between a town with as good a golfing atmosphere as anywhere in the world and one of the great clubs. I'm afraid that sounds like a recipe for getting less out of both rounds than you should.
-
Mark I'm totally with you, far better to have the full lunch and 36 at RStG, Rye, Muirfield or The Berkshire or ham, egg and chips and 36 at RCP, West Sussex or a 100 others than gallop around two great courses and miss the ambience of the club.
-
While definitely not as fortunate as some other, blessed for the opportunities to have experienced these:
SFGC/Olympic Lake
Valley Cub/Valley Club (lovely place to do it, couldn't imagine walking another 3 1/2 times for HHH)
Turtle Bay (Palmer)/Kahuku Golf Links
-
I don't have a whole lot to choose from, to be honest. The only two that come to mind are Kirtland/Mayfield and Tobacco Road/Southern Pines. My pick would be Kirtland/Mayfield because (a) I walked those courses and (b) Kirtland is awesome.
-

It's not bragging. To me I just want to share my experience and hope to insight some fun discussion about that and other related topics. I fully believe there's time to do both. I've had some great 36 hole days at the same venue and some great ones at different venues. I don't talk down on those who prefer one or the other
-
18 at Arcadia followed by 18 at Crystal Downs. Magic.
-
Some of my better ones include:
Had the pleasure of Baltusrol Lower and Upper a handful of times
36 at Kingsbarnes was a really good day
St Andrews Jubilee and New with lunch before and drinks after in the clubhouse there is a great day
Saucon Old and Grace is a good one
and admitting my home course bias - Hershey East and West is a real good combo as well
-
Slapper kills it, no surprise!
I did Turnberry at 6AM morning after British Open 2009 (first group off, good to have media friends), followed by Western Gailes that afternoon. A top-5 golf experience for me.
More recently, a 36'er of Hidden Creek and Galloway National, then craps at Borgata, was tough to beat.
-
In September of 1985, on I played Sunningdale Old & New in one day, Berkshire Red & Blue the next day and Wentworth East & West a couple of days later. That was a pretty good week. ;)
-
36 in a day can leave great memories

ellerston 36
RMGC East and west
winged foot east and west

ahh memories
54 in a day at the national once, a round on each old, moonah and ocean

Friar's Head / Shinnecock (see Sheehy's post)
Royal Melbourne / Kingston Heath

That RM / KH day was really something wasn't it. As if the courses, weather and company wasn't enough, you go and score a load of birdies, and an albatross!

Machrihanish and Loch Lomond ain't no picnic either!!
I missed that one. Andrew must have a helicopter.

I really enjoyed the two days we played 36 holes at Silloth last year. If only I had a picture of the whale & chips I had for lunch in the clubhouse. Brian, you'd be impressed!
Royal Lytham (the whole experience) followed by Formby was just as good.
I still think that playing 36 holes a day during my club's open week as a teenager will never be beaten. The course (Gweedore) wasn't great, but it was just so enjoyable not having a care in the world. When the sun was shining, it was wonderful.
-
Blackwolf Run/Whistling Straits and Streamsong Red/Blue were both really really good this year. But for me, hard to top 36 at Secession a couple years ago.
Mid-morning round, lunch followed by another 18. Only group on the course all day and finished 18 as the sun was setting. Also included, fantastic porch to enjoy several drinks.
-
St. Andrews Old in the morning (captain's time at 9 a.m.) and Carnoustie in the afternoon.

featuring North Haven and Tarratine is etched in the memory of the participants and the cyclist who tagged along, and was forgotten immediately by our excellent boat captain, just another day in paradise for her.
With an "idea guy" and an "implementation guy" anything is possible.

Last Friday I hosted Ran Morrissett and Sean Arble at Reddish Vale in the morning, and competed in our Friday Open in the afternoon. A grand day.
I'm hoping this Saturday will be as much fun. Monthly medal in the morning followed by a twilight round with visiting GCAer Jim Eder and my son...
-
Mark
Macrahanish was a 7am start and Loch Lomond 2.30pm, it included black puding and haggis for lunch half way up the drive, and the drive was just as memorable as the golf
Silloth was also 7am start, then train to woodhall and a 6pm game
All felt pretty easy at the time and when you have just arrived form Australia you wake up pretty early so the summer days make it possible
Andrew :)

8) ;D 8).
We played 54 at Sand Hills on a glorious May Day , Now that was a great walk!
-
Duncan: any chance of a Ran Reddish Vale photo profile? Any other Ran reviews in our future from this England trip?
Brian,
I'm pleased to say Ran was very taken with Reddish Vale and is planning on doing a profile for the 'Courses by Country' section. As for other courses, I know he was visiting Aberdovey and Royal St Davids before heading up to Scotland - I seem to remember him mentioning Askernish and the Trump place...
-
Merion West in the am, lunch on the patio and Merion East in the afternoon. Followed by a quick trip to the clubs archives then off to the showers with a big cold beer. I think we had dinner afterward, I believe I was smiling so much it made no difference. What a great day.
-
Beat Kalen in GRUDGE MATCH II at Chambers Bay, have lunch with Rich and Brent and other GCAers they hosted, and then go out and play another 18 with Mark Saltzman while he disassembles the course.
-
On my recent trip at Bandon we were first out on PD, played in 3 hours. There was a gap at OM so again we played in 3 hours, never running into another group.
A handful of beer with a late lunch at 1:30. followed by a most civilized nap, and then an emergency 9 before watching playoff hockey. Technically it was 45, but it was pretty sweet even without the 9.

OK: THAT to me is the perfect day. Noone in front or behind, golf on two of the greatest courses on the planet with amazing scenery, a good lunch, bit of a nap and another quick hit at the best time of the day to be outdoors followed by sports on the telly while presumably having more food and beers. Yes, yes, yes!
Ditto, especially for playoff hockey.
-
What, with a bad back and two bad knees I don't have too many 36 hole days, these days... We used to get the bus to Buxton and pay a single green fee at High Peak and play 54 without taking a break in case we were told to stop... We were 14 or so. Never quite sure if we were within our rights or not. My memorable 36 would be at Tobacco Road. 2 reasons - the middle 18 - the back 9 of the first round and the front of the second added up to 69 - the only time I've played 18 consecutive holes in less than 70. My Tiger slam. And - I'd asked about a caddy but there were none. The lady in charge of the food concession had a son who said he'd drive the cart for me so I could walk but not carry (I was alone). For the second 18 he drank 18 cans of beer. Far more impressive than my score.
-
LACC and Wilshire yesterday was awesome. ;D
I've had lots of good ones. A few...
Piping Rock / Creek
Quaker Ridge / Sleepy Hollow
The Bridge / Southampton
Somerset Hills / Essex County
Maidstone / Sebonack
Prairie Dunes / Prairie Dunes
Sand Hills / Sand Hills
Dismal / Dismal
Old Works / Rock Creek
Ballyneal / Ballyneal
Streamsong Red / Blue
Kinloch / Congressional
-
I haven't had many 36 hole day trips.
Multiple round days.
Here are a few: The Kittansett Club & Woods Hole GC, 27 holes at Cotuit Highgrounds CC & Highland Links GC (lunch between rounds at the Beach Comber - Wellfleet, MA), and a 45 hole day at Sankaty Head GC - Old Siasconset 9 - Miacomet GC.
- Andy
-
Good ones so far this year:
TCC/Vesper/Worcester
Oyster Harbors/Hyannisport
Upcoming this year that should be good:
Milwaukee/Butler National
-
Mountaintop and Wade Hampton,...I've got to do that twice.
-
1. Cypress Point/Pebble
2. Old Course/Old Course
3. Prairie Club Dunes/Pines
4.Ocean Course/Ocean Course
5. Royal Portrush/ Port Stewart
-
I had a lovely 36 holes at Ballyneal followed by 36 holes at Ballyneal that afternoon. I think of it as my "2/5ths of a Colton."
-
I have been fortunate to do quite a few of the ones mentioned above but obviously there are some really great ones listed that are hopefully down the road. One that I did that I don't think was mentioned was Newport and Wannamoisett.
-
Carnoustie/St Andrews Old
Troon/Turnberry
LACC/Riviera
Prarie Dunes/Flint Hills National
-
My 40th birthday. 36 hole match with my best friend at Spyglass in the AM, Cypress in the PM. Was 3 up going into 16, when he hits a cut driver to 18 feet, makes par, then hits the flag on 18 to tie me for the day. Dinner at the tap room and bottle of Silver Oak ease my pain. 2nd place: Butler/Chicago Golf.
-
After playing both courses the last couple days, I'll take Olympia Fields. 36 OUTSTANDING holes.
-
Goldie may choose;
Sleep in car - Shinnecock Hills - lunch - NGLA - sleep in car.
-
Teed off at Cypress Point at 7:30 am and then drove to the Olympic Club and played that afternoon. Awesome day!
Charleston Country Club and Yeaman's Hall was also a fantastic day.
-

I love that you two have both played many great courses, but as you look at all the stories here, a nap is the dealbreaker.
It was a spectacular day though.

1st off Augusta, foresome. All 4 players break 80. Car to airport. Lunch on the plane. Private to Monterrey. Cypress in afternoon thanks to a 3 hour time difference. All 4 players break 80, 2 break 70. Dinner at Spanish Bay Inn. Quality day.

Thanks. Been following this site for 5 plus years, did the review with Ran at CC of Fairfield. I decided I wanted to get involved in the forum a little deeper. No rushing was involved in the day, but it's really hard to beat.

8) late March 1980,
an am/pm Sunday 36 at Southern Pines CC + twilight golf on their Cardinal 9 hole course down the street from swimming pool...
first full day of three decades worth of annual Go Carolina Golf Outing (5-7 days of 2+ a day play in the Sand hills)
-
A few decent one's over the years....
Royal Dornoch/Castle Stuart
Kingsbarns/Old Course
Cruden Bay/Royal Aberdeen
Bandon Dunes/Pacific Dunes
Pebble Beach/Pasatiempo
The National/St.George's
Banff/Jasper
36 holes = tired with sore feet.....but fun!

Your reality just jumped 5 steps ahead of any golf daydreaming I could fathom.
WELCOME!
I'm suspecting my best will be this Friday, but so far it would have to be PD/BT in 2008. Will report back :)
-
My best was a few weeks ago:
Lookout Mountain GC in the morning...followed by the Honors Course in the afternoon.
What a mix of old and new in one day. I would also recommend French Lick Resort (Ross/Dye) for same reasons.
*My buddy played Augusta National this year only to fly back and get in a twilight 9 at Seminole.
(Not 36, but pretty darn cool)

Then there's that. Amazing! I think the Augusta/Cypress 36er was brought up by someone I was talking to about the best 36 hole days, but it was more fiction than anything else. I'm glad to know that it's not fiction!! Great story!
-
BSheehy- I've been very fortunate in my career to play at some of the most amazing places, with a handful of big wigs I shouldn't be hanging with. My 30+ rounds at cypress long make me one of he more privileges humans in America, non member of course. I have so much to contribute on this site, look forward to the rest.
-
Atlantic City then Aronimink
-
I've got to say it would be Cypress Point in the AM and again in the PM.
It is a different course in the afternoon, right?
-
One of the great days of golf today.
Started with 18 holes playing a spirited match (won 1up) and whale-watching at NSWGC.
Then a fantastic afternoon round hosting James Bennett at Bonnie Doon, walking up the 18th in this sunset.
Doesn't get any better.

When talking of golf it is Monterey not Monterrey, the former is in California the latter in Mexico.

Great pic of Arrowtown.
Hopefully you get a chance sometime to share your thoughts and some more pictures of the course.
-
playing Mid Pines in the morning in a tournament then getting invited by a playing partner to play #2! 36 holes and temp was 110 and walked both rounds! Car broke down on the way to #2 and Church group helped me with a way to get the car to Pinehurst and #2! The Summer of 98'!
-
Looking back, I would add NGLA and Shinnecock.

36 holes at Piping Rock and Garden City with Mr Mucci was pretty neat.
-
St. Georges and Southampton was pretty sweet.

I have had the good fortune to play many of the aforementioned 36-hole combinations, and would not want to pick a single favorite. However, maybe the best weekend I've ever done was on behalf of two of my interns -- pardon if I've told this story once before, but it's not on this thread.
When we were building the North course at Stonewall, I told my two interns (Kyle Franz and Philippe Binette) that I would take them up to Long Island for the weekend and show them some golf. I had only arranged to play 18 holes -- the point was to let them walk and see the courses. But we did all bring our clubs.
We started at Garden City first thing Saturday morning, pulling into the maintenance building. I'd intended to walk the course, but the superintendent INSISTED we play ... he was about to get fired and knew it might be controversial to send three visitors off #10, but he didn't care at that point. So, the boys got to play Garden City.
When we were done we drove out to Friar's Head so we could walk it. Jim Kidd was still the pro, and I didn't want to ask him to play because I knew he could get in trouble for sending us out without a member. But it was raining by then and there were no members out, so he invited us to play if we wanted -- so we played 18 holes in the rain there, too. Pretty good double, GCGC and Friar's Head.
Next morning, we are on the tee at Shinnecock, to play our one scheduled round, with a member friend of mine. The boys thought that was the best course they had ever played, so, I told them we'd go look at one other -- National. I go into the pro shop and ask if we can walk the course -- fine. And then when we're on the second fairway, the caddiemaster comes out and invites us to play, as long as we'll take caddies. He had a couple of guys who hadn't got loops and it was the end of the day.
I don't know what my best 36-hole day is, but I'm pretty sure I know what are Kyle and Philippe's.
-
I would have to think that the best 36 day was Jordan Speith this year. Pine Valley AM/ Augusta PM.....
I had the fortune of playing Pine Valley very early in the morning and then NGLA late in the afternoon. It was quite a long day but one I will never forget
-
Nothing that interesting compared to everyone else's, but some of my more memorable ones:
1. Treetops in Michigan - played Fazio in the rain, then it cleared up and we did the Smith course in the afternoon.... during the second 18 I made my first hole-in-one on #8 on the Smith course and met Rick himself later that day and had him sign the scorecard.
2. Grand Cypress North/South and then the New, on a particularly memorable family vacation.
3. Walked 18 twice at the Janesville (WI) Country Club when I was 15 years old, having only just gained access to it through my high school golf team. I got up at 7 am and had my dad drop me off on the way to work, then I played 36 in about 5-6 hours and got done around 12:30-1:00. Then I walked home, and nearly passed out from heat exhaustion at the end of it. But it was worth it.
-
I recently did the double at Streamsong and that was a blast.
Plus any 36 hole day at Bandon is pretty hard to beat too...
-
8) 8) 8)
In no order
Friars Head- Shinnecock
Merion- Pine Valley
Castlestuart- Portrush
45 at Sand Hills
Wow....very lucky for me ,
-
Hands down would be Sunningdale New and Old for me. Best golf club in the world.
Runners up would be:
St. Andrews Jubilee and Old Course
Pebble Beach twice
UNM South Course twice
Ballybunion Old and Cashen
-
Crail Balcomie in the morning and The Old Course in the afternoon. Did not have a guaranteed time at TOC but just hung around and talked to the starter and wound up getting the last time off of the day. Finished in the gloaming.
-
Another great day was playing 54 with Bruce at Dismal.
-
I played Bandon Dunes and Pacific Dunes in one day.
I played Olympic Club-lake course and Pasatiempo.
But I really look forward to playing Dismal -Red and White- with my dad at the 5th Major..
Just might top the first 2.
-
Upon further reflection:
Kingsley/Crystal Downs
Pac Dunes/Old Mac
Lost Dunes/Lost Dunes (as the only golfer on the property)
-
I've done the double day at Sand Hills, and that was a pinnacle for me.
I have great anticipation my best 36 hole day will be in a few weeks when I take on Barnbougle Dunes in the morning, and Lost Farm in the afternoon. Playing at the near antipode of the earth will certainly add to the excitement. 8)
-
My best 36er this year was playing Washtenaw CC in the morning and playing Battle Creek CC in the Afternoon followed by dinner at Arcadia Brewery in BC!
-
It's cheating a little bit but I have two days, and one of them was a 54 hole day.
The first will be one of the first times I ever walked 36, at Old Greenwood in Lake Tahoe, a surprisingly good Nicklaus course.
The other was this summer, playing 54 holes at Pinehurst #2, Dormie Club, and Southern Pines on the same day.
Both of those days I remember looking out over the course and the majestic view beyond, and in those moments, I've realized how much this game has given me. I'll never forget those moments.
-
Fishers and Yale
best 72 hole day is Trails, Bandon, Old Mac, and Pacific at the Summer Solstice event 8)

Any double (or triple (or Quadruple!)) at Bandon is world class! One of my favorites (not my best) was Sunningdale Old followed by The Addington.

edit

Best in 2016 for me thus far have been:
Lost Dunes / Dunes Club x2
Myopia / Essex County
Whitinsville x2 / Kittansett
-

I did Sunningdale Old and New a few weeks ago and that is tough to beat.

1. National Golf Club, Old and Moonah
2. Royal Portrush, Dunluce and Valley

Playing in The Rennaisance Cup at Tara Iti, though I have to admit I walked the last nine.
Winged Foot West and East is up there with the best of them.
-
Fishers / Kittansett was pretty awesome!
-
In 2016: Pasatiempo/SFGC
-
Royal Dornoch, St. Andrews, Pebble,
-
sunning dale old and new comes close but for me 36 holes at barnbougle with my two brothers before my wedding. Epic
-
For my 50th birthday I wanted to walk 50 holes. With my best friend we played Wentworth West and Edinburgh course in the morning. Drove to Sunningdale and played the New course and 8 holes of the Old course until it got dark. We returned to Wentworth for dinner and stayed at the club. Pretty good day.
-
Brora & Dornoch
-
36 at Dornoch two days in a row would be tops.
New and Old at Sunningdale close second.
-
8)
Portstewart in am and Portrush in afternoon was quite a day .
It was my only trip to Ireland and it just got better despite the weather being a little uncooperative .
-
Royal St Georges, bacon rolls and a round at Princes, lunch and a round at Royal Cinque Ports and back to Royal St Georges for dinner.
-
Merion East and West
Winged Foot East and West
St. Andrews Old and New.
Next week Ballybunion Old and Cashen

I rather enjoyed Narin & Portnoo followed by Cruit Island, and both in sunshine! :)

36 holes at Prestwick, on a lovely spring day, with informal lunch upstairs (the dining room was being refurbished), kummels for my partner and I left behind the bar by four gentlemen members with whom we got into conversation, a cracking game (which I lost), and then going out for a few more holes after tea, halving the 37th in three, and on returning to the clubhouse being asked by another elderly gentleman member if 'we were by any chance practising for the Amateur?'!
That has to rank very high indeed, with only perhaps a 50-hole day at Luffness New a couple of years earlier to challenge it, or maybe a blissful June day at an almost empty Brancaster (a visiting party had cancelled). But that Prestwick day was very, very special.
36 holes on one course will, for me personally, always trump rounds on two different courses in the same day (unless you are visiting, say, Saunton or Walton Heath for more than one day, and have the option of playing both courses twice within 48 hours). Not least, as others have said, so that you can have a proper lunch and one or two drinks, wherever you are, which for me is absolutely part of a golf treat.
-
Same course:
45 holes at Prairie Dunes, the last 9 while sharing my hickories with the entire 4some
36 holes at The Golf Club, one of the coolest places and an incredible course
48 holes at Kingsley, with the last 12 holes consisting of cross-country, winner chooses next hole
36 at Rock Creek Cattle Co, with my (then) 6 year old daughter for the second round
Different courses:
Dismal White / Red
Wade Hampton / Mountaintop
Rustic Canyon / Valley Club
Fenway / Quaker Ridge

Rivermont

Several years ago when I attended the 5th Major at Dismal River.
Played 18 in the morning in the tournament.
Played 36 in the afternoon with my brother and 2 of my good friends for money.
Then ate and drank till I fell asleep in the tv room.
-
Joe Meindl, an 82 year-old daily caddie at my home club, the Dunes Club, likes to say (in his thick German accent) that there's nothing better than parent/child golf. When my dad turned 80 in 2014, my brother and I took my father on the Great Plains Tour (Ballyneal, Dismal Red/White, Sand Hills, Prairie Dunes) where we played 207 glorious holes over seven days. While my dad did ride in a cart for much of the trip, he did walk all 36 on Day One at Ballyneal. It was the golf trip of my lifetime, with wonderful memories across the board.
-
The Old Course and Carnoustie.
-
Crail Balcomie & The Old Course.
-
The Old Course Reverse :) and The New Course. Too bad you can't do the Old Course that way anymore. It was a great way to start April and watch the BBC version of the Masters in the Auchterlonie Suite of the Dunvegan.
-
Echoing the sentiment of a few others before, a 36 hole day at Sunningdale with drinks on the veranda in between is an idyllic way to pass the time.
In terms of different courses, 18 at Gullane 1 followed by lunch and foursomes at Luffness is pretty neat.
-
While my dad did ride in a cart for much of the trip, he did walk all 36 on Day One at Ballyneal.
THAT...is impressive!!!!!
Cheers
-
We did 18 at Enniscrone in the morning and 18 at Lahinch late afternoon. When the driver was told we were going to wake up at a hotel in Sligo and play Enniscrone and Lahinch the same day he kept telling us it couldn't be done. He discounted the craziness of golfers, combined with the fact it get dark so late in July.
-
I would say this Monday was pretty special, given the conditions.
Played 18 in the morning at Pine Needles. Because they were closing the course for a green conversion Tuesday the let the greens get faster (they weren't that bad) and used the "toughest" individual day pin on each hole from the 2007 Women's open. While many were playable, the first hole gave me a new appreciation for the skill level of the best, as two shots left me on the left fringe looking at a seemingly benign up and down for an opening birdie. I hit a bump and run that I thought would be adequate and ended up leaving with an opening triple bogey including three bunker shots. David Madison was nice enough to forego their club event to play with us, and while most holes were playable, we each had one or two "get away" from us.
In the afternoon, we moved over to #2, who was hosting North South Amateur in the morning. As we were getting our caddies we overheard a few caddies laughing at the "suckers" who would be going out with resort guest in those conditions. Greens were running at similar speeds to Pine Needles (I suspect 11.5) and all pins were close to edges with a few in crazy places. While on player in the North South did break par, there was also a guy in the field who shot a higher number there than either of his rounds at the US Open the prior week.
A very fun and long day in the heat that was also a fully humbling experience. One takeaway I have is I fully understand why professional golf takes so long, particularly around the greens. When relatively small misses can add several shots with difficult pins, and stakes are so high, it really is hard to fault the players for taking there time on the greens.
-
I played 45 at Sand Hills in September. Walked the first 18 and rode the rest.
I played Pinehurst #2 and The Dormie Club the same day in Dec 2013.
I play 36 holes at my home course about one time a month, walking.
-
It seems to me that anyone answering this question woth two different clubs doesn't get it.
For me Muirfield (on a Wednesday), RSG (as Andrew said), The Berkshire and Swinley Forest all come into it, but Muirfield pips it.
I think I still agree with this, though I'm rather hoping that within the next 6 weeks I'll have at least a couple of others to add to the list of the very best 36 holers...
-
Through the generosity of another GCA member we recently played Quogue Field Club in the morning and West Hampton CC in the afternoon. A fantastic day with great company. Quite a contrast as Quogue has most of their green's at grade while WH have many of theirs raised/pushed up in the Mac/Raynor style.

Agreed! 36 at Sunningdale was among the best. A few others from the recent trip were not bad either:
Machrihanish / Mach Dunes
Kingsbarns / Elie
Trump Aberdeen / Fraserburgh
Moortown / Alwoodley
Swinley Forest / Woking
-
Recently I was able to get to Winged Foot and play the West in the morning before heading to Sleepy Hollow for a pm round. Dew sweeper duty and 2nd off on the West was thrilling, and was my first time on the property. A tour around the clubhouse and a lunch in the big room before I jumped in the car and drove 40 minutes to Sleepy Hollow. We finished as the sun was setting over the Hudson, which was pretty spectacular.
-
Alwoodley/Moortown
Kings/Queens Gleneagles
TOC (36 holes)
Wick/Brora
-
I'm prety much with Mark inthat the use of a car between rounds knocks points off the day.
But the exception for the GCA aficiaonado
Lundin/Leven is a must do.
-
One I did this year was Glasgow Gailes and Western Gailes with a very pleasant lunch in between.

Wasn't my experience but there is a related story I will never forget.
Back in the early 1980s Chevron sold a refinery in Louisiana to Standard Oil (Ohio). To celebrate the closing Chevron management invited a couple Sohio brass to San Francisco for a game at the Olympic Club. The Sohio guys accepted and decided to first play a round at Canterbury before leaving Cleveland for the flight to California.
The group played an enjoyable round at Olympic. When they were finished, a Chevron guy said "any chance you guys could stick around for another day and play Cypress Point?", an invitation that was promptly accepted.
Well, all good things come to an end and the Sohio guys took the corporate jet home. But, shortly after lunch the next day, the senior Sohio guy called his colleagues and said "I kind of feel like playing Firestone this afternoon".
So, they jumped in the car and went down for a round at Firestone.
Maybe not the greatest, but Canterbury, Olympic, Cypress Point and Firestone wasn't bad for a work week.
Well, not too many people heard about this in the company, Sohio being a pretty conservative, hard work ethic kind of place. But, fortunately I did!
The next day I ran into the President of the Company on the elevator and asked him how his golf game was.
I never saw someone so flustered!
-
Start out playing 18 at Shinnecock with the first tee time of the day, racing to the airport to catch a plane to Fisher's Island, playing 18 at Fisher's and finishing at dark, having to return via a boat to CT because FI has no lights for a airplane to navigate after dark, so flying from CT back to Southampton, followed up by a big steak dinner and then drinks until 2 am at NGLA. What a day!! Right Joe A???????
-
Shinnecock and Maidstone
Cypress and Pebble
Olympic and SFGC
Scioto and TGC
Machrihanish (54 holes)
Those were the days, 36 too much for me any more lol!
-
36 at Muirfield: once with my wife, once with a member, 5 times with my best friend.
Distant second is Shinnecock-National with my best friend.
-
I'm a big fan of a BIG course, small course combo, or 18 then 9.
Machrihanish followed by Dunaverty was a great day.
Pretty hard to beat Narin and Portnoo followed by Cruit in the 27 hole dept.
Two places I've played and enjoyed so much I cancelled my afternoon round elsewhere and went right back to the first tee.
CC of Charleston and Brora (canceled Dornoch to do it)
-
I did Turnberry and Irvine on the same day in less than 150 strokes. I'd say that was my best 36 day. I've had some great days in Nebraska but they went over 36.
-
To me its not so much the quality of courses you play its about being with your buds. On Wed we did an Interstate 36er at Crooked Stick and Moraine preceded by boozing the night before. Solid Golf, great weather, and good company. There are other hardcore nuts like us we found. Ran into the same Detroit GCAer last week and at Moraine on Wed, small world.
-
This one is really tough as there are so many.
I think my most prolific would be Shinny/NGLA. With lunch at one and dinner at the other. Honestly I wouldn't recommend that. I think those should each be a full day, heck a full week if you can swing it. I had no choice so it was a heavy day I will never forget.
There are really so many great ones.
Any two courses at Bandon Dunes Resort.
MPCC Dunes/Shore
Sunnindale as previously mentioned.
Walton Heath is pretty great.
Turnberry/Prestwick.
Muirfield/North Berwick
Old Course and any other course at St. Andrews.
Pinehurst/Mid Pines
Roaring Gap/Old Town
Sand Hills
Dismal
Ballyneal
Wolf Point
Where do I stop. How about some of the more unique ones I've done several times combining links and heathland in a single day.
De Pan/Royal Hague
De Pan/Kennemer
De Pan/Noordwijkse
Rye/Swinley Forest - including a huge buffet lunch at Rye and 1.5 hour traffic jam on the way. That was quite a crazy day together with Fergal O'Leary.
-
I've had a few good ones.....Pebble/Spyglass....Spy/Pasatiempo....Pacific Dunes/Bandon Dunes....Baltusrol Upper/Sleepy Hollow.....Cypress Point/Monterey Peninsula Shore....Cherry Hills/Castle Pines....Dismal River Red/White.....Cabot Links/Cabot Cliffs
-
While I have had many 36 hole days much like the previous posters...Cypress/MPGC, Any 2 Bandon courses, etc.... Two days stand out the best to me.
Back in 1994, I was in the USAF in pilot training out in Texas. My roommate/ best friend and I went down to play The Quarry in San Antonio. After the round, we decided to go to the base golf course and play another 18. We both played great at each course which added to the enjoyment. From there we went and got crab legs, wings and beer. Left there, went to the Officer's Club, met some female officers in nursing school and the rest is history. As my friend and I have commented for the next 20 years, "THAT was a pretty good day"!
Recently, I had another great day at Yeamans Hall. We played 18, then the member said, "We can go in and have a sit-down lunch, or we could grab a sandwich and play another 18". Of course, we chose another 18. After our 36th hole, the member said, "Well, there is about 2 hours before it gets dark". Of course, we headed back to the 1st tee for another 9 holes!!! Finished the day with a beautiful sunset, ducks flying over and putting out on the 9th. Epic! Drove from there to Secession to do the same thing the next day!!!
I will never forget either day!!!
-
I had a few:
Pine Valley and Merion
Pebble and Spyglass
Ballybunion Old and New Cashen
Carnoustie twice (now that was dumb day)
Winged Foot East and West
-
Deal / Royal St. George's is a good day!
-

Great to see a member love his club so much that he wants to play 45 holes in a day. Good stuff!!!!!
-
A morning round at Tom's High Pointe Golf Club followed by a 4pm tee off at Arcadia BLuffs. What a great day and an awesome sunset as well.
-
I'd have to say a morning round at Victoria Golf Club followed by a late Afternoon Round on Royal Melbourne West. A morning Round at Kingsley Club followed by an afternoon round at The Loop this summer is a close second.
I have to add that it has been amazing to see some of the 36 hole days on here. Many of us are truly blessed. I also want to say I love it when people just talk about special days at 1 course or just two perfect rounds on mediocre courses with family or close friends. I guess I haven't grown up enough or am still too excited about some recent opportunities to play great courses to do that.
-
A Father Son Race the sun and beat the traffic 45 hole day: LACC North, Riviera CC... and a twilight night cap at zen like 9 Hole Muni, Penmar by the Sea. Priceless
-
The Old Course at St. Andrews and Lundin Links. What a quirky, enthralling day of golf.
-
Natl Golf Links and Shinnecock
Cypress Point and Olympic Club
-
Several come to mind...
Arcadia Bluffs / Crystal Downs
Roaring Gap / Primland
Pinehurst #2 / Pine Needles
Southern Pines / Mid Pines
Black Wolf Run / Whistling Straits
Troon North / Grayhawk
Sawgrass CC / TPC Sawgrass
Any day with 36 holes is a great day...
-
I have had some special 36 hole days but the only one that matters to me,
Walking Gullane Hill with Archie Baird in the morning, St Andrews on a whim in the late, late afternoon, with Nick the caddie on my bag, finished in the dark. July 1997 still have the scorecard firmly placed in my golf architecture book. Had no tee time at St Andrews just showed up at the starter stand.
-
Over the past couple of years, I have had a few good ones:
- Olympia Fields North and Beverly
- Both at Olympia Fields
- 45 holes at Sand Hills
- Sweetens Cove and Chattanooga
- Crooked Stick and Broadmoor
- Flossmoor and Beverly
-
36 at Dornoch in perfect weather with a nice breeze, a great caddie and a hot putter. 75-74 with a 25 foot par putt at the last to finish it off. Dinner afterwards in the Royal Hotel restaurant looking out those awesome windows with a bottle of French wine and then a walk at sunset at 10:30 pm across the course. Accidentally left a copy of Bobby Jones's On Golf book on the bench between 2 green and 3 tee.
-
Hmm....hard to keep up with the name droppers here, but just the same we all have those unforgettables. In the early seventies, my brother and I found ourselves in Banff, not by accident. We lived in western Colorado in those times, and I saw a picture of the Devils Cauldron in a book in the school library. I am pretty sure it was the sixth hole in those days.
We teed off at daylight, someone collected our 14 dollar all day green fee at about the 14th fairway, and we played 72 holes, finishing in the dark.
I would love to hear others who can share a value like this.
By the way, I made two, twos on that hole, as good as they come.
-
Prior to this year I hadn't had any 36 hole days since my time on the high school golf team more than a decade ago. That said, had a chance to experience 3 awesome 36 holers this year:
-36 holes at Sand Hills
-LACC North & South
-36 holes at Ballyneal
-
36 holes with Mike and Don is all that I'm hoping to get out of life.
-
Any 36 hole day is a memorable one, as the most recent one replaces the previous. 36 with friends no matter where played is a day to be treasured as much for the breakfast, lunch, and cocktails after as it is for the golf and course.
-
36 at Tobacco Road maybe 8 or 10 years ago, on my only, after yet another knee surgery hired the son of a one of the catering staff to 'caddy' for me. He turned up with a cart and drove while I walked the 1st 18. 2nd round I asked if he wanted to play, he did, pretty well and he drank 18 beers in 18 holes - the best I've ever witnessed. I shot 36 on the front to add to 33 on the back in the morning for the only 18 consecutive holes I ever shot under 70. No, that wasn't a round under 70, I know...
-
Rosapenna in the morning, followed in the afternoon with Portsalon. Accessible, affordable, and loads of fun.
Half dozen lads at most on each links; leisurely walking...
-
Mine was 2 weeks ago- morning round at Pebble Beach, lunch at the Tap Room and over to Cypress Point for an afternoon round. Checked into my room at Cypress and then enjoyed a fine bottle of Caymus with the guys in the SFB Morse room. As one of the guys said , " this is how life should be". It is a magical place, the Monterey Peninsula .
-
Rosapenna in the morning, followed in the afternoon with Portsalon. Accessible, affordable, and loads of fun.

I played the both the same day also, Portsalon and Sandy Hills. I wasn't too fond of Portsalon but the views were spectacular.
-
Cypress Point/ MPCC Shore Course
NGLA / Sebonack
Peachtree / The Honors Course
Pinehurst # 2 / Grandfather Mountain ...longest travel between & longest day :)
-
Highland Links / Cabot Links
Prouts Neck / Cape Arundel
Mohawk / Schuyler Meadows
CC of Wisp / Lodestone (never played 36 holes before and had both courses all to myself)
-
It would be hard to narrow down to a favorite, but this would be the short list (no order)
Highland Links
Muirfield
Royal County Down
Ballyneal
Cabot Links
Sand Hills
Pacific Dunes
Olympia Fields North and South
-
Most 36 hole days are at home course. Significant ones overseas.
Royal Porthcawl, one birdie in each 18
Perranporth, had to finish the last 9 on my own as everyone else at Buda left for dinner.
Two days in a row at St. Enodoc.
Rosses Point and Strandhill
Rosapenna Old Tom Morris
Royal Portrush Valley Course (had 9 days available and they wouldn't let me have 36 at Dunluce on any one of them)
-
A very good day was playing North Berwick in the Morning, followed by a round at Dunbar, then driving back to our hotel in St. Andrews we stopped and played another round at Leven Links. So, please forgive my ability to count and add a third course, but hey, we were there so why not.
We were some tired puppies, but wore some really big smiles!!!!!!!!!
-
Chris,
that's the great thing about Scotland in summer 36, 54 or even 72 holes in good daylight are more than possible.
Glad you enjoyed it.
Jon
-
Sandhills/Sandhills
-
The Cabots
The Olympia Fields's
Muirfield then North Berwick... in the rain
Tot and Tobacco
Greywalls and Heritage many times
Man, those were all fun days.
-
36 holes with my son, 11, at the home course Battenkill CC. 1:20 minute 9's, nothing but smiles, nothing but laughs.
-
Many come to mind:
Newport / Brookline - two founding USGAClubs in one day
Merion/ Aronimick
Upper / Lower at Baltusrol
Brookline/ Myopia Hunt
Monterey Peninsula (Dunes)/ Cypress Point
National Golf Links/ Shinnecock
Friars Head/ Maidstone
But 36 at Sand Valley with some guy from NO was pretty special
-
That last post should have said
36 at Sand Hills with a great guy from NO!
-
Sorry for a "final" addition but I don't think anyone had this one and they are only a few miles apart. Also; the renovation over the last several years at Piping Rock coupled with Tom's work at The Creek makes this really spectacular:
Piping Rock / The Creek
-
36 with my dad at the University of New Mexico South Course before my Junior Year of college.
-
My Dad would have turned 100 this year. We only took one golf trip and that came when he was 80. We didn't play 36 in one day but played Kingsley and Crystal Downs on two successive days in early October. It is one of my great golf/Dad memories.
-
2 on my recent trip to Scotland
North Berwick - had the pleasure of playing with three members in the morning and then was paired up with some fellow Australians in the afternoon. Great weather, great company, great course, my wife was having a nice day out looking at the puffins and a birdie on the last :-)
St Andrews - managed to play 36 in one day at the old course, a beautiful sunrise at the starters hut and out at 7.30, glorious weather and some ok golf. Managed to get a nice badge on my wedge playing my second off the road. Then back out about 3 without a caddy and a father and daughter pair. The weather turned nasty and they quit after 9 so I had the surreal experience of playing all by myself, no caddy on the old course. Got absolutely soaked, got to 2 under through 12 and hung on for a couple over. The wind howled - I hit a 6 iron into the 5th for my second and a 3 iron into 18! A day I will never forget.
I really enjoy playing 36 in a day particularly on the same course - it gives you a sense of the place that a quick once around just doesn't give you.
-
Played 54 at Machrihanish this June with my son. He won the first 18 one up, halved the second 18, and i won the third two up. Machrihanish is a great walk that I would be happy playing every day, definitely meets all fun criteria, and when you finish the first 18 you want to immediately go out for more.
-
A few particularly memorable ones...
Fishers Island / Kittansett
Cal Club / SFGC
Pine Needles / #2

About 15 years ago I was able to engineer a Springdale vs Merion interclub match at Merion. Two foursomes each.
18 holes AM
lunch
18 holes PM
libations
Afternoon - my best Merion round to date - 77. Beat my friend and host Double D.
As Phil Connors would say " That was a pretty good day". Wouldn't mind repeating that !
