Title: Best opens of the last ten years
Post by: Mike Mosely on June 16, 2008, 03:13:03 AM
Name your favorites from '99-'08.

4.  This one.  What electricity.  Don't blink, you'll miss something on Saturday, then Rocco and Woods lock horns for the whole round.

3.  Payne in '99.  So gritty. So Patriotic in his red, white, and blue.  I miss him.  He'd beat Tiger in a playoff.

2.  Winged Foot '06.  That was incredible

1.  Pebble '00  Historic.

Mark,

I have a little news for you, yesterday is going to be a lot more historic than 2000.  If you do or will have a child and could take them back in time., would you take them back to yesterday or 2000? What was exciting about 2000?

I would add 1950 and 1939 to any list of all-time great US Opens.  Unless of course playoffs turn you off.

I don't see how you cannot have 2000 on a list of all-time opens. I don't care if it was a route - it was probably the single greatest tournament played by individual and may never be duplicated.

1964 -- Venturi was arguably in worse physical shape than Tiger this week. Maybe not top 3, but certainly one of the most memorable.

1971 -- Trevino tops Jack in a playoff result that few predicted.

1955 -- Fleck tops Hogan in a playoff result no on predicted.

1980 -- Jack sets the scoring record and wins his 4th at the age of 40 in a memorable dual with Aoki.

1973 -- Miller's 63.

1992 -- Kite wins his only major made notable for the absolute train wreck that occured in the final round, maybe the toughest conditions for a final round of the US Open in history.

1990 -- The longest modern-day open, 91 holes, featuring Irwin's bomb on 18 to get into a playoff against the ultimate journeyman in Donald.

1984 -- A personal favorite, more notable for the intensity of the final round fireworks between Zoeller and Norman than the anti-climatic playoff.

1911-- John McDermott becomes the first American-born golfer to win the Open at Chicago GC.

1905 -- Willie Anderson wins his 3rd Open in a row -- the only golfer to do so -- at Myopia.

For me, 1999 by a mile.  Pebble Beach felt more like a practice round on Sunday.

Isn't anyone THRILLED that we get more Open golf today?
Did it ever occur to anyone that it COULD get even better?

I feel like I just walked off #18 at Brora and the first tee is open

If I was in college or a teen-ager yes. Now I have to tape it and avoid anyone talking to me about it all day. Ridiculous that the whole tournament is on during prime time and then the playoff starts at noon.

This might have been the most exciting U.S. Open Saturday of all time.  But I don't know what tournament you all were watching on Sunday ... it was nerve-wracking as always but the play was not up to snuff.  If it weren't for the drama of Tiger being injured, this would not be in the top ten Opens.

In the past ten years, my vote would be for 1999.

and it's not over yet.
talk about a david vs. goliath

One could say the same that 1999 wouldn't be as revered if tragedy hadn't befell Payne Stewart.

Torrey Pines proved a great venue (hard to believe anyone can say those greens have no interest-at that speed-plenty of slow putts uphill as well)

Steve:

It was a terrific Open. Miller jumped a ton of great golfers -- Palmer, Nicklaus, Trevino and Boros among them -- and it remains the standard closing round in a major by which all others are measured. It also led directly to the famed Massacre at Winged Foot in '74, when the USGA went over-the-top penal with the set-up in response to Miller's round. Maybe not some of the last-hole drama seen this year or in 1999, but still one of the more compelling Opens played that decade.

I really enjoyed 2004 at Shinnecock.  The great course.  Phil playing near-perfect golf up to the 71st hole.  (And even there hitting an almost-perfect bunker shot.)  Goosen performing the most magic I've ever seen on the final nine greens of a major tournament.

Also Pavin's win at Shinnie in 1995, with his astounding 4-wood 2nd shot on the last hole.

Casper's win at Olympic in 1966.  He played fantastic down the stretch, while Arnie turned in his historic collapse.  I think this tournament did the same thing to Arnie's psyche, that the 1986 Masters did to Seve.

1967, Baltusrol.  Jack proved once and for all he was the present and the future of golf, and Arnie the past.  I'll never forget his final round 65, or that huge 1-iron to the final green.  This was also where Lee Trevino made his introduction to the national golf scene.

Jeff:

I'm with you. I changed my flight home from New York so I could watch the playoff. Geat threatre.

The playoff should make for the most deserving champion, be it Tiger or Rocco.

I do feel bad for those who have to work and will miss it, I used to be one of them, but today with the internet, you can cheat a little bit and how is your boss going to know, he'll be watching the Open himself.

Of the last ten years, I thought 99 and 04 were better Opens, though they of course lacked Tiger's fireworks.

2000 is in a class by itself. Not that it was the best, it just can't even be compared to anything else, other than the 97 Masters.

In discussing this with my Dad last night, I mentioned the names Jack Fleck and Billy Casper.

So oh yes I am prepared for this eventuality... and if it occurs, well it won't break my heart.  I do root strongly for Tiger.  He's just not my hero.  There's only golfer for that... the guy who lost in 1982.

In the last 10 years, 08, 06, and 99 are a push for me with respect to entertainment. All for entirely different reasons, which is the beauty of this tournament. Tiger's display on the first few holes yesterday reminded me more of the KP6 8). That was eerie.

Phil -- The longest modern-day Open was actually in 1994 at Oakmont when Els and Roberts when three extra holes after the 18 hole playoff.

As for me, well, 1999 will always be special. Huck, do you still remember Jack Whitacker sitting on the beach with Nicklaus (who thought he won) and saying, "Mr. Nicklaus, it was a pleasure to be in your time. Now over to 17...."  :'(

What I'll always remember about Payne Stewart over Mickelson in 1999 is the way he made three straight putts of about 15' to close with his See More putter.  I seem to recall two were for par and only one was for birdie.  Mickelson did everything right to win and then the knickered one poured in everything he looked at in the last hour.

2006 was an unreal, almost Van de Velde-like finish.  Some guy won that was hardly ever a factor.

2008 is certainly one of the most entertaining.  Now if Rocco can hold off the Tiger it will be a nice feel-good tale of the underdog.  (An Eldrick win gives some the feel-good tale of overcoming injury and perseverance.)

Tony:

I remember far too much of the events of 1982.  Interesting also.. I think I was channeling Jack Whitaker last night... another thing I told my Dad:  we are lucky to be alive to be watching this.

Re 1982 though, the main memory is this exchange with the same man:

Dad:  he's way long (meaning Watson's shot on 17)!  Your hero's gonna win!

Tom:  "yeah, watch, he'll chip this in" (out of total disgust after years of Watson breaking my heart getting up and down from trash cans)

Sigh......

1999 was pretty darn cool... although I was rooting for Phil.

Tony:

You are correct, technically. My own personal history list (never published) has an asterisk next to Els' win because of the faulty ruling he received. Absent that, Roberts wins in 90 holes.

John:

Stewart sunk a 25-footer for par on 16, a 3-footer for birdie on 17 (he and Lefty hit nearly identical tee shots to about three feet -- a terrific moment in recent Open history -- but Mickelson couldn't convert and Payne did), and his 15 footer on 18 for par to win.

Shinnecock in 2004--two elite players battling down the stretch on a great course, with some unbelievable saves by Goosen.

To me, that beats a gimpy Tiger scratching it around with Rocco and Westwood.

1999 still beats yesterday in my mind.  People often forget that Tiger was in the thick of things in that one til the end too.  He made an unbelievable birdie on 16 to tie, but couldn't convert his par on 17... setting the stage for the Stewart/Mickelson duel.  In the end, you have the two greatest players of a generation (Tiger and Phil) as well as a fan favorite multiple major winner that tragically passes away months later (after his last hole Ryder Cup chilvary) on a a top-notch traditional first-time Open venue.  It will be hard to top 99 from my perspective.

No, I am saying we need to sit on it a while before we compare it to a championship where the champion is dead.  I really do not know if 08 is the greatest modern championship ever and I have my reputation riding on it...I just say give it some time and we will see.  If Tiger gets his leg amputated next week because gangrene set in on Sunday morning....Then I would say it is the greatest.

There have been some great US Opens that I have attended, watched on TV, or read about.  I am not going to start listing my favorite US Opens, other than to state that the US Opens of 1913 and 1964 are my two favorites to read about.

I immensely enjoyed watching and reading about this year's US Open.

There are a lot of different opinions per the 18-hole playoff format.  Both sides have expressed their views quite well per this matter.  However, even if one is generally in favor of a sudden-death or 3-4 hole playoff on Sunday, I think most will have to agree that for THIS US Open the 18-hole playoff only made THIS year's event that much better.  (Conversely I will agree quite a few 18-hole playoffs are anticlimactic.)

I recently thought that the USGA was on the verge of soon changing the US Open to a 4-hole playoff.  However, I think this year's very dramatic playoff following a very exciting US Open has extended the life of the 18-hole playoff.

One may like or dislike the 18-hole playoff format, but I think it may be round for awhile.

No...I just threw some th8ings off the top of my head.

By the way, I never saw the 1913 Open - either on TV or in persona, but I sa yest and 1982 and '99.  I understand Monday was amazing, probly the best playoff in history...I just gave a couple examples off the top of my head.  I mean if you want to get technical, there were just as many fireworks at Medinah at '90, just not by two colorful, flamboyant guys.

1999 got to take it, but you have to amit that the US Open is pale in comparision with the Open. It may just because i'm Irish but lasts years Open was the best major in the last 10 years by a country mile!

Brad, I don't think I can agree this was the third bast Open ever, but it was really exciting, amazing, and it overachieved on a lot of levels.  I'd have to agree that '82 was better and 2004 - even though it was a collapse in was historic and grand theatre, so was snead taking an 8 to blow the open that one time, just because it isn't a happy ending doesn't mean it wasn't epic in its own way.

Over all time?  Well I missed quite a few back in the day ;) but 1913, 1930, 1954 (withered hand!), 1960, 1966, 1963, 1981, 1973, 1983 are all vintage years.  Those are just from memory, if I had a list in front of me I could be more thorough.

I also like the 18-hole playoff.  What's good for TV is often bad for golf.  Moreover, they underestimate how dramtic a playoff can be.  one writer called it "pistols at dawn" and that's cool.  What other sport does that?  TV should embrace it and build it up.

Maybe one of the best for gagging.  Every one of the contendrs bogeyed or double bogeyed the last hole of regulation.
