Title: Kiawah/Charleston in January
Post by: PCCraig on November 28, 2007, 07:20:23 PM
Hi Everyone,

I am driving down to South Carolina this upcoming January before the real world and my career as a commercial banker starts on Jan. 14th. I am staying at a spot on Kiawah Island and hanging out for a few days.

I have been to Kiawah before, in the summer, but never in the Winter. While I was down there I played the Cassique and River Courses, as well as briar's Creek just off the island. Can anyone tell me their experience with weather and playing conditions down there this time of year? Does anyone think that the Ocean Course would be worth playing/paying if the weather isn't great? What course amoung the public options at Kiawah would you recommend.

Also, I was wondering if anyone had any good suggestions of places to play around Charleston? Doing research, its hard to tell which courses are actually within driving distance of Kiawah.

A little off topic, but being a fan of Seth Raynor, what do you think the chances would be, if I wrote a letter of introduction, for an official of either CC of Charleston or Yeamans Hall Club to let me walk the course?

For the record this isn't an attempt for access or anything like that, just suggestions.

 Thank you!, Pat

The Jans aside...anyone have anything with comments about Kiawah?

I have been searching for awhile now, does anyone know what the golf rate for the Ocean Course in Jan is?

I don't think CC of Charleston is private, but I could be wrong.

As  a fan of Raynor, are you a member of one of his courses? If yes, I'll bet your pro can help you out. This is how we gor on Metarie (sp?) in New Orleans and the people there could not have been nicer!

CC of Charleston is very private.....I am sure a letter would be sufficient to just walk and take a look.

Pat: I just received some info on Briars Creek in the mail - what was your take on the course?

Jerry,

Briar's Creek was a pretty good golf course. From the tips it is plenty hard and long. There is a lot of water on the course...lots of typical SC marshland and a few long forced carries. Overall I think it is an an above average R. Jones course being very similar to the River Course at Kiawah.

Shivas,

So when are we planning on reversing the Jans?

Briar's Creek is okay. Id take the River course over it 6-4, though the ambiance and lack of golfers at BC is pretty good. The River course has a greens style grass on their fairways which make the ball get into all kinds of fun trouble! The renovation work done there in the summer of 2006 was pretty good!

Agree.  The River Couse, in my opinion, is the second best course in the region (I say that never playing Yeamans Hall)...
