I should have probably explained my post as a pure satire of a bias debate regarding Ice Cream and Bert Convy. (Thanks Dan for the proper spelling and information!)

Tommy,

The benefit of this thread is to identify that you have a perfect sponsor for the outing next spring at Rustic and Ojai.

Maybe even a change to the title of the event (or a new one) called "The Emperor's Pink Spoon"

Mike,
Great idea!

Instead of tees, everyone will have to hit off of those little pink taster spoons too!

Dan,

Embarassed to admit that Strawberry Cheesecake is my favorite of all. Of course I have strange tastes to begin with . . . . The Pit is one of my favorite courses in the world.

I noticed many of you putting in your two cents on your favorite ice cream without stating your qualifications.

Like I said, I've made ice cream many times and have tasted ice cream all over the world. I know the difference between ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, gelato, etc...

Many of you don't appear to be qualified to rank ice creams. You should try just listening to experts before you go and declare your favorites.

If you are interested, state your qualifications. Perhaps you will become an ice cream panelist. We'll then come up with the definitive list for you non-experts (perhaps after adding some tradition points or assuming we get some sort of sponsorship, points for friends of the rankings.)

I'm amazed on a thread I started a movement starts to do away with the King's Putter.

Dan,

Would you know a good spumante if it presented itself?  :)

I occasionally get it confused with a Spicoli, but if they both presented themselves to me I'm hopeful I'd catch on quickly.

Dan- Was this the jist of your post? If so, I find it inherently flawed in that I don't need any expert to tell me what my favorite is. Or is that your point?

I'm amazed on a thread I started a movement starts to do away with the King's Putter.

It was I, and the intent was not to do away with the "King's Putter" and to disrespect said "King" or "Putter".

In my short time here, I have seen and heard of our forefathers that have graced this board, and have, deservingly so, earned the respect of many and made their mark on history.  In that regard, my suggestion to the emperor was to christen a trophy in his honor that would be reflective of our collective obsession with ice cream.

The best ice cream in the world is the Chocolate ice cream which I make.  Not to divulge all my secrets, but the addition of 20 year old Armagnac will kick up just about any cullinary creation.

The best commercially available ice cream is Rum Raisin served by the Devon House in Kingston, Jamaica.

My qualifications to judge ice cream include having travelled to enough obscure places that I can quote Ice Creams that no one else has tasted.  This allows me to switch any ice cream debate to uncontestable grounds, since you can't possibly judge ice creams without having tasted my candidates.

Dan,

Don't forget frozen custard, which has a higher fat content than ice cream = yummy.  It was popular in Wilmington/South Jersey when I lived there and is very popular in my area (Raleigh, NC area).  A chocolate/chocolate chip "Concrete" from Goodberry's will knock your socks off it's so good.

Dan,

I did not want to state my qualifications for fear of intimidating the rest of you but if you must know: We are all aware that Ice Cream was invented some 4000 years ago by the Chinese.  Unfortunately the used Milk, Rice and snow.  Clearly, this was not going to make a list of best deserts.  During the middle ages, travelers brought ice cream back to Europe and having ancestors as part of the first travelers to risk the long inland passage to the Far East, it is a little know fact that it was Horatio Wigler who was responsible for Ice Cream's appearance in Europe.  In fact, our family crest is a fat guy dripping Ice Cream on a defeated soldier in battle.  The only reason this thread exists is due to my family's work throughout history.  That written, I decree that any list not having BK's Mint Chocolate Chip as #1 is as invalid as the GD 2001 list with PB in the top spot!
And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.

Reporting back regarding recent field work:

While jamoca almond fudge remains my favorite, I cannot take issue with Dan King's ranking of World Class Chocolate.  Had my first scoop today and it is indeed outstanding.

Dan Kelly,

Mandarin Chocolate, known to insiders as Tony The Tiger for obvious reasons, is no longer available.  My source, a local long-time franchisee, labeled it "the worst selling ice cream of all time."  Perhaps Joe Sixpack was right after all.

I am available for further field testing weekdays only any time between 1:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m. CST.

Happy 4th to all,

Mike

Additional research is ongoing however, I would like to provide an update ...

For B&R, Chocolate Chip, Vanilla, Rocky Road, Very Berry Strawberry, French Vanilla and Chocolate were all developed in 1945.  Mint Chocolate Chip came in 1948.

Of the permanent flavors, the baby of the group is Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough in 1992.

My research over the 4th of July weekend has allowed me to reassess my rankings.  Although Chocolate Chip is still #1 in my book, Mint CC moves from #4 to a tie for #2 with Spumoni ...
